Challenges To Academic Marketing: Toward The Next Decade, David B. Montgomery Jan 2004

Challenges To Academic Marketing: Toward The Next Decade, David B. Montgomery

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

At the turn of the century and millennium, the Marketing Science Institute and the American Marketing Association undertook in a conference and a special issue of the Journal of Marketing to examine what were seen as fundamental issues and directions for marketing in the dawning millennium. A series of competitively commissioned papers addressed such questions as: How do customers and consumers really behave? How do markets function and evolve? How do firms relate to their markets? And what are the contributions of marketing to organizational performance and societal welfare? These questions were thought to best satisfy the criteria of differentiation, …

Predicting Phenological Development In Winter Wheat, Qingwu Xue, Albert Weiss, P. Stephen Baenziger Jan 2004

Predicting Phenological Development In Winter Wheat, Qingwu Xue, Albert Weiss, P. Stephen Baenziger

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Accurate prediction of phenological development is important in the winter wheat Triticum aestivum agroecosystem. From a practical perspective, applications of pesticides and fertilizers are carried out at specific phenological stages. In crop-simulation modeling, the prediction of yield components (kernel number and kernel weight) and wheat-grain yield relies on accurate prediction of phenology. In this study, a nonlinear multiplicative model by Wang & Engel (WE) for predicting phenological development in differing winter wheat cultivars was evaluated using data from a 3 yr field experiment. In the vegetative phase (emergence to anthesis) the daily development rate (r) was simulated based on the …

Modern Approaches To Floristics And Their Impact On The Region Of Sw Asia, Vernon Hilton Heywood Jan 2004

Modern Approaches To Floristics And Their Impact On The Region Of Sw Asia, Vernon Hilton Heywood

Turkish Journal of Botany

Attitudes to floristics have changed considerably during the past few decades as a result of increasing and often more focused consumer demands, heightened awareness of the threats to biodiversity, information flow and overload, and the application of electronic and web-based techniques to information handling and processing. This paper will examine these concerns in relation to our floristic knowledge and needs in the region of SW Asia. Particular reference will be made to the experience gained from the Euro+Med PlantBase project for the preparation of an electronic plant-information system for Europe and the Mediterranean, with a single core list of accepted …

Possibility Of An Information System On Plants Of South-West Asia With Particular Reference To The Turkish Plants Data Service (Tubives), M. Teki̇n Babaç

Turkish Journal of Botany

For quick and accurate access to information about a flora of a country it is becoming increasingly important to develop databases. Databases developed and provided by international organisations are expensive to use and difficult to maintain without outside help. It is therefore important for developing countries to develop their own plant databases best suited to their requirements. One such example is the Turkish Plant Data Service (TUBIVES), designed by Turkish systematists. This database is described with some samples, and the possibility of creating a South-West Asian Plants Information Service (SWAP-IS) is briefly discussed.

Who's Afraid Of Bouncing Checks?, Emmanuel O. Sales Jan 2004

Who's Afraid Of Bouncing Checks?, Emmanuel O. Sales

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The Bouncing Check Law is not a new piece of legislation having been enacted as Batas Pambansa Blg. 22 in 1979. This law had filled the dockets of the courts because the act of issuing one worthless check is considered as criminal and proof, although still beyond reasonable doubt, is facilitated by the law itself. Even now, the provisions and the intent of this law require understanding considering that the issuance of checks is a normal and frequent business transaction. There are, moreover, judicial pronouncements about the law that ordinary persons may not be aware of, but should know nonetheless …

External And Internal Alignment Influence On The Performance Of Smes: A Conceptual Framework, Edgardo Bolinao Jan 2004

External And Internal Alignment Influence On The Performance Of Smes: A Conceptual Framework, Edgardo Bolinao

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Strategic management scholars generally view environmental scanning as a prerequisite for formulating effective business management strategies. Effective scanning of the environment is also seen by both large and small firms as necessary to the successful alignment of competitive strategies with environmental requirements and the achievement of successful firm performance. This study of industry-specific small manufacturing firms examines contingency theories that link environmental conditions (industry life cycle stages), competitive strategy, owner characteristics (functional experiences), scanning (frequency and scope of scanning), and firm performance. The integrated alignment model shown in Figure 1 incorporates: (1) external alignment (alignment between competitive strategies and an …

Policy Brief #6: Child Care Quality For Children With Disabilities, Kathy Thornburg, Helen Raikes, Brian Wilcox, Julia C. Torquati, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Susan Hegland, Jean Ann Summers, Jane Atwater

Center on Children, Families, and the Law (and Related Organizations): Publications

Inclusion is a goal that is widely embraced for children with disabilities. The U.S. Dept. Education sets the target for 90% of children with disabilities to be enrolled in general education classes for 80% or more of school day (U.S. Department of Education, 1998). Early educators likewise support the rights of all young children to participate in a variety of natural environments within their communities. If this ambitious goal is to be met, more services must be provided in community child care. Yet quality child care choices are limited in availability, and parents of children with disabilities may have their …

Spatial Variability Of Groundwater Recharge - I. Is It Really Variable? Jan 2004

Spatial Variability Of Groundwater Recharge - I. Is It Really Variable?

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The spatial variability of recharge is an important consideration in estimating recharge especially as all methods of estimating it are 'point' estimates and in most places recharge varies in space. This paper along with the accompanying paper attempts to find a suitable answer to the question of taking this variability into account in estimating groundwater recharge. This paper attempts to determine if recharge is actually varying in space and that this is 'true' variability and that it is not an artefact of the method used for estimating recharge. It also pulls together information on spatial variability of recharge reported by …

Diffused Interface Model To Prevent Ingress Of Sea Water In Multi-Layer Coastal Aquifers Jan 2004

Diffused Interface Model To Prevent Ingress Of Sea Water In Multi-Layer Coastal Aquifers

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

In many regions coastal aquifers are major source of supply of water to various sectors. However indiscriminate pumping from these aquifers leads to seawater intrusion which is difficult to contain. A numerical model is developed to study two-dimensional steady state seawater intrusion problem involving hydrodynamic dispersion in a synthetic multi-layered confined coastal aquifer. The intrusion model is used to investigate efficacy of seawater control measures involving freshwater recharge wells and combined system of freshwater recharge and saltwater discharge wells. The study found that depth of recharge well, its location from the seashore and well head are important parameters that can …
