An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson
An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research is to investigate how newer police officers are familiarized into their agency with respect to the manner in which they were trained and mentored. The concept of mentoring programs has been highly successful in the private and business sectors for many years. Since the concept of formal mentoring programs in law enforcement is largely limited to date, this study incorporates research in several other disciplines, to determine if there may be a corollary regarding law enforcement and other disciplines, and if so, to what degree mentoring exists among patrol officers. A survey was distributed to …
Piano Inside Out: The Expansion Of The Expressive, Technical, And Sonorous Spectrum In Selected Twentieth-Century Art-Music Repertoire For The Modern Acoustic Piano, Mira Kruja
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Art Music for the acoustic piano has changed tremendously during the twentieth century. Some of the techniques and skills pianists need to master in order to be able to perform successfully twentieth-century art piano music include: a refined ability to discriminate varied layers of sonorities; sophisticated pedal combinations; a sometimes percussive technique; and superior control of complex metric and rhythmic passages. New combinations of patterns that require specific technical preparation pose substantial pianistic challenges. Todays pianist needs to master a variety of glissandi, chords, or single melody textures played directly on the strings inside the piano and to combine such …
Studies Of Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis Genes In Clavicipitaceous Fungi, Caroline Machado
Studies Of Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis Genes In Clavicipitaceous Fungi, Caroline Machado
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Neotyphodium species, endophytic fungi associated with cool-season grasses, enhance host fitness and stress tolerance, but also produce biologically active alkaloids including ergot alkaloids associated with fescue toxicosis in grazing animals. One approach to reduce fescue toxicosis is to manipulate genes in the ergot alkaloid pathway. The gene, dmaW, encoding the first pathway-specific step in ergot alkaloid biosynthesis, was cloned previously from Claviceps spp. and its function was demonstrated by expression in yeast. Putative homologs have been cloned from Neotyphodium coenophialum (from tall fescue) and Neotyphodium sp. Lp1 (from perennial ryegrass). In order to confirm the function of dmaW in ergot …
Isolation And Characterization Of A Second Protein L-Isoaspartyl Methyltransferase Gene In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Qilong Xu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Conversion of aspartate and asparagine residues to isoaspartate is a prevalent covalent protein modification in cells. The accumulation of these altered residues can lead to the loss of protein function and the consequent loss of cellular function. The L-ISOASPARTATE METHYLTRANSFERASE (EC 2.1.1.77) (PIMT) iteratively methylates abnormal isoaspartyl residues leading to conversion to L-aspartate, thereby mitigating the injurious effects of aging. Arabidopsis thaliana is unique among eukaryotes studied to date in that it possesses two genes (At3g48330 (PIMT1) and At5g50240 (PIMT2)) encoding PIMT. The PIMT2 gene exhibits a complex transcriptional control involving different transcriptional initiation sites and 5'- and 3'- alternative …

In addition to sensor data, the web-based laboratory includes lesson plans, tutorials, assessment questions, and a feedback utility. This project is helping science teachers meet new state science standards from the Indiana Department of Education, which call for hands-on laboratory activities and real time data analysis. Remotely accessed labs are becoming popular because they offer the opportunity for large numbers of students to …
Generation Of The Transient Electrical And Spontaneous Magnetic Fields By Solid State Combustion, Karen S. Martirosyan, J. R. Claycomb, J. H. Miller Jr., D. Luss
Generation Of The Transient Electrical And Spontaneous Magnetic Fields By Solid State Combustion, Karen S. Martirosyan, J. R. Claycomb, J. H. Miller Jr., D. Luss
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Experiments revealed that transient electric field intensities up to 2.5 V/cm were generated during the initial period of combustion synthesis of the ferromagnetic products before the maximum temperature was reached. This occurred when the iron particles were partially oxidized and the reaction product was mainly magnetite sFe3O4d. The electromagnetic field caused spontaneous magnetization of the product in the postcombustion zone. Magnetic field values up to 4 µT formed after the sample temperature fell below the Curie temperature and the initial reactants were completely converted to the ferromagnetic phase PbFe12O19. Increasing the volume of the samples increases the absolute residual magnetic …

The Prodigal Argument: Mccollum V. Board Of Education, Gerard V. Bradley
The Prodigal Argument: Mccollum V. Board Of Education, Gerard V. Bradley
Journal Articles
From the Introduction
Judges, lawyers, and scholars all cite the 1947 case, Everson v. Board of Education, as the cornerstone of Establishment Clause doctrine. They are right to do so. The Everson Court took two path-breaking steps: incorporation and strict separation. The justices there held, for the first time, that the Fourteenth Amendment made the Establishment Clause applicable to state action. Then they offered a novel account of what non-establishment meant. In sweeping language (which you can find at 330 U.S. 15 - 16) they held that it meant more than equality among religions. By requiring that all government …

Exploring Online Brand Choice At The Sku Level : The Effects Of Internet-Specific Attributes, Yanan Wang
Lingnan Theses
E-Commerce research shows that existing studies on online consumer choice behavior has focused on comparative studies of channel or store choice (online or offline), or online store choice (different e-tailers). Relatively less effort has been devoted to consumers’ online brand choice behavior within a single e-tailer. The goal of this research is to model online brand choice, including generating loyalty variables, setting up base model, and exploring the effects of Internet-specific attributes, i.e., order delivery, webpage display and order confirmation, on online brand choice at the SKU level. Specifically, this research adopts the Multinomial Logit Model (MNL) as the estimation …

"There is something ludicrous in philosophical discourse," Michel Foucault writes, "when it tries, from the outside, to dictate to others, to tell them where their truth is and how to find it... " (Foucault 1985, 9). In our age of moral relativism and multiculturalism, it is easy to hear in this sentence a simple condemnation of intellectuals who pose as authorities on questions of belief, and it is all too easy to agree; yes, of course, we ought not tell other people what to think. But given the issues, directions, and investments of Foucault's work, especially in The Use of …

Optimal Design Of Pump And Treat Remediation Systems : Treatment Modeling, Source Modeling And Time As A Decision Variable, Karen L. Endres
Optimal Design Of Pump And Treat Remediation Systems : Treatment Modeling, Source Modeling And Time As A Decision Variable, Karen L. Endres
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Groundwater optimization and simulation is a maturing science. Research work contained in this thesis extends into areas that have not been fully explored. The incorporation of source and treatment systems selection and design produces information to help decision makers. Further insight is gained by evaluating some of the requirements and standards enforced by regulations such as, remediation time.
The technical aspects of a remediation system are set by the physical properties and the regulatory constraints enforced. As an example, the addition of a realistic treatment system gives more accurate cost estimates, but the pump and treat (PAT) systems parameters do …

Topics In Media: Video Gaming As A Cultural Practice, Katrina Mcneely Farren
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Welcome to Topics in Media: Video Gaming as a Cultural Practice. This project and resulting course grew out of an intense apprehension I have had about the gaming practices of my 11 year-old sons, both avid gamers who like to spend every waking hour playing video games on their PlayStation, computer, or Xbox. They began their gaming career at the age of 4 installing and playing educational games on the computer, but as they have grown older, their preferred genre of gaming has become first-person shooter (FPS) games, all of which tend to be intense and violent in nature. As …
Pupil Phase Apodization For Achromatic Imaging Of Extra-Solar Planets, Weidong Yang
Pupil Phase Apodization For Achromatic Imaging Of Extra-Solar Planets, Weidong Yang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Direct imaging of extra-solar planets in the visible and infrared region has generated great interest among scientists and the general public as well. However, this is a challenging problem. Diffculties of detecting a planet (faint source) are caused, mostly, by two factors: sidelobes caused by starlight diffraction from the edge of the pupil and the randomly scattered starlight caused by the phase errors from the imperfections in the optical system. While the latter diffculty can be corrected by high density active deformable mirrors with advanced phase sensing and control technology, the optimized strategy for suppressing the diffraction sidelobes is still …

Development Of Ion Exchange Models For Water Treatment And Application To The International Space Station Water Processor, David Robert Hokanson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The International Space Station (ISS) requires a substantial amount of potable water for use by the crew. The economic and logistic limitations of transporting the vast amount of water required onboard the ISS necessitate onboard recovery and reuse of the aqueous waste streams. Various treatment technologies are employed within the ISS water processor to render the waste water potable, including filtration, ion exchange, adsorption, and catalytic wet oxidation. The ion exchange resins and adsorption media are combined in multifiltration beds for removal of ionic and organic compounds.
A mathematical model (MFBMODEL™) designed to predict the performance of a multifiltration (MF) …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works
Structural components machined from aluminum forgings can exhibit distortion and poor dimensional quality due to residual stresses formed primarily during heat treatment. To alleviate these problems, mechanically stress-relieved tempers are used in which a small amount of plastic strain is introduced after solution heat treatment and prior to aging. For hand-forged billets and die forgings, this strain is introduced by compression. Process specifications for compression stress relief typically allow a range of strains, and this process variability can in turn lead to inconsistent forging performance in machining. In addition, since cold work is known to accelerate the aging response and …
