Plasma Levels Of Vitamins A And E In Marine Turtles (Chelonia Mydas And Caretta Caretta), Karen Patricia Frutchey Jan 2004

Plasma Levels Of Vitamins A And E In Marine Turtles (Chelonia Mydas And Caretta Caretta), Karen Patricia Frutchey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Insight into blood values for free-ranging populations of chelonians is very incomplete. A better understanding of marine turtle ecological physiology is necessary for population health assessments and conservation management plans. Vitamins A and E are fat-soluble compounds required by vertebrates. Vitamin A is required for growth, differentiation and integrity of epithelial tissue, bone remodeling, reproduction and vision. Vitamin E is a constituent of cell membranes where it is an antioxidant and free radical scavenger. Both nutrients are required for reproduction and immune system function. I determined concentrations of vitamins A and E in plasma of blood samples from Caretta caretta …

Optical Wave Propagation Through Non-Kolmogorov Atmospheric Turbulence, Paul Anthony Liptack Jan 2004

Optical Wave Propagation Through Non-Kolmogorov Atmospheric Turbulence, Paul Anthony Liptack

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of atmospheric turbulence on an optical wave can seriously degrade the reliability of an optical communication link. One atmospheric effect is scintillation, which is caused by index of refraction fluctuations. Several observations of atmospheric turbulence statistics suggest a modest change in the power law behavior of Kolmogorov' s power spectral density model. The corresponding index of refraction fluctuations are assumed to have spatial power spectra that obey power laws that deviate somewhat from the classical - 11/3 power law. The purpose of this study is to develop analytical models for scintillation and other wave propagation statistics based on …

Social Acceptance Of Adolescents With Tourette Syndrome, Rebekah M. Craig Jan 2004

Social Acceptance Of Adolescents With Tourette Syndrome, Rebekah M. Craig

Modern Psychological Studies

Sixty college students from two Biopsychology classes at Central Connecticut State University were presented with one of three scenarios. Scenario one described an adolescent with Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS) with complex tics, in which he was making obscene gestures, yelling, and screaming out curses in the middle of class. Scenario two described an adolescent with TS with simple tics, in which he was tapping his foot and making loud honking sounds in the middle of class. Scenario three described an adolescent without TS, in which he was not portraying a motor movement or a vocal sound. Students responded …

The Effect Of Group Size On Social Facilitation And Social Loafing As Measured In Productivity, Anissa Adams, Jenny Counard Jan 2004

The Effect Of Group Size On Social Facilitation And Social Loafing As Measured In Productivity, Anissa Adams, Jenny Counard

Modern Psychological Studies

In recent years, there has been increased awareness in the apparent change of individual behavior when placed in a group. This study was designed to examine the relationship between group size and productivity. All 48 participants took part in each of the three trials. In each trial they were given a word (duct tape, knife or water) and worked as an individual, pair, or group of four to generate uses for that word. It was a prediction of this experiment that individual productivity would increase when the participant worked as a pair. However, it was also expected that the individuals' …

Unfolding The Mystery Of Aggression In Children And Adolescents, Erin Rapien Jan 2004

Unfolding The Mystery Of Aggression In Children And Adolescents, Erin Rapien

Modern Psychological Studies

Since 1996 there have been 17 reported cases of violence in U.S. schools by children ranging in age from 11 to 18. These cases have prompted an increase in research on risk factors and correlates of aggression. A review of this new literature would serve to highlight common findings and explain discrepancies. In this literature review I will discuss family, peer, and community influences as factors in the development of aggression in children. Within each context are several influencing factors that contribute to the development of aggression. I will also discuss possible implications, interventions, and future research needs as well …

Income And The Use Of Prescription Drugs By The Elderly: Evidence From The Notch Cohorts, John R. Moran, Kosali Ilayperuma Simon Jan 2004

Income And The Use Of Prescription Drugs By The Elderly: Evidence From The Notch Cohorts, John R. Moran, Kosali Ilayperuma Simon

Center for Policy Research

We use exogenous variation in Social Security payments created by the Social Security benefits notch to estimate how retirees' use of prescription medications responds to changes in their incomes. In contrast to estimates obtained using ordinary least squares, instrumental variables estimates based on the notch suggest that lower-income retirees exhibit considerable income sensitivity in their use of prescription drugs. Our estimates are potentially useful for thinking about the health implications of changes in transfer payments to the elderly and for evaluating the benefits of the recently enacted Medicare prescription drug benefit.

Development Of A Multi-Disciplinary Ecological Model For Childhood Obesity, David W. Hey Jan 2004

Development Of A Multi-Disciplinary Ecological Model For Childhood Obesity, David W. Hey

Kinesiology and Public Health

During the past two decades the prevalence of childhood obesity has steadily increased in the United States. An ecological model of health behavior change has been recommended to address the rise in childhood obesity. The purpose of this study was to build a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, ecological childhood obesity model by examining past theory and research in 25 journals covering five disciplines over a decade (1993-2002).

To identify environmental antecedents, this study collapsed 10 existing ecological models of obesity prevention and divided resultant antecedents (n=94) into five ecological categories (social norms/national policies, community factors, school factors, family/peer or interpersonal …

Dietary Patterns And Prostate Cancer Risk In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey Epidemiological Follow-Up Study Cohort, Marilyn Tseng, Rosalind A. Breslow, Robert F. Devillis, Regina G. Ziegler Jan 2004

Dietary Patterns And Prostate Cancer Risk In The National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey Epidemiological Follow-Up Study Cohort, Marilyn Tseng, Rosalind A. Breslow, Robert F. Devillis, Regina G. Ziegler

Kinesiology and Public Health

Ecological studies implicate a “Western” diet in prostate cancer development, but whether dietary patterns measured in individuals are associated with risk has not been studied previously. We examined this issue using prospective data from the nationally representative United States Health Examination Epidemiological Follow-up Study. Among 3,779 men followed from 1982– 84 to 1992, 136 incident cases were identified. Using principal component analysis on responses to a 105-item dietary questionnaire, the following three distinct patterns were identified: a vegetable-fruit pattern; a red meat-starch pattern characterized by red meats, potatoes, cheese, salty snacks, and desserts; and a Southern pattern characterized by such …

Competency Requirements For Managerial Development In Manufacturing, Assembly, And/Or Material Processing Functions, Brian C. Tietje, Clifford S. Barber

Marketing

Organizations that include a manufacturing, assembly and/or material processing (MAMP) functions have become increasingly complex, competitive, and dynamic. These organizations demand increased emphasis on recruiting, developing, and retaining management talent to gain a competitive edge. This paper uses a modified Delphi triangulation approach to identify and categorize first-level MAMP management competencies perceived to be important by three critical stakeholder groups – an expert MAMP upper management panel, first-level MAMP managers who have been employed between one to three years, and business management faculty members. The results identify 14 knowledge, skill, and value-based competencies and three higher-order factors as essential components …

Is The Implicit Association Test A Valid And Valuable Measure Of Implicit Consumer Social Cognition?, Frederic F. Brunel, Brian C. Tietje, Anthony G. Greenwald

Marketing

This article discusses the need for more satisfactory implicit measures in consumer psychology and assesses the theoretical foundations, validity, and value of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as a measure of implicit consumer social cognition. Study 1 demonstrates the IAT’s sensitivity to explicit individual differences in brand attitudes, ownership, and usage frequency, and shows their correlations with IAT-based measures of implicit brand attitudes and brand relationship strength. In Study 2, the contrast between explicit and implicit measures of attitude toward the ad for sportswear advertisements portraying African American (Black) and European American (White) athlete–spokespersons revealed different patterns of responses to …

The Original Meaning Of The Judicial Power, Randy E. Barnett Jan 2004

The Original Meaning Of The Judicial Power, Randy E. Barnett

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this paper, the author refutes any claim that judicial review was invented in Marbury v. Madison, or that, because it is contrary to the original meaning of the Constitution, it must be justified by some nonoriginalist interpretive methodology. He will do so, not by discerning the shadowy and often counterfactual "intentions" of the founding generation, but by presenting as comprehensively as he can what the founders actually said during the constitutional convention, in state ratification conventions, and immediately after ratification. These statements, taken cumulatively, leave no doubt that the founders contemplated judicial nullification of legislation enacted by the …

The Priority Of Morality: The Emergency Constitution's Blind Spot, David Cole Jan 2004

The Priority Of Morality: The Emergency Constitution's Blind Spot, David Cole

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Three aspects of Bruce Ackerman’s thesis, which is a proposal to legitimate the practice of suspicionless preventive detention during emergencies, are discussed in this essay—its premises, its efficacy, and its morality. Part I critiques three of Ackerman’s premises—his underestimation of courts and overestimation of legislatures as guardians of liberty, his misguided belief that the supermajoritarian escalator provides a one-size-fits-all solution to the conundrum of emergency powers, and his contention that the short-lived character of emergencies makes it sensible to cede to a minority of our popular representatives control over critically important and largely unpredictable decisions concerning the appropriate duration of …

Nuclear Surveillance And Degradation Of Hypomodified Initiator TrnaMet In S. Cerevisiae, Sujatha Kadaba, Anna Krueger, Tamyra Trice, Annette M. Krecic, Alan G. Hinnebusch, James T. Anderson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The tRNA m1A58 methyltransferase is composed of two subunits encoded by the essential genes TRM6 and TRM61 (formerly GCD10 and GCD14). The trm6-504 mutation results in a defective m1A methyltransferase (Mtase) and a temperature-sensitive growth phenotype that is attributable to the absence of m1A58 and consequential tRNAiMet instability. We used a genetic approach to identify the genes responsible for tRNAiMet degradation in trm6 cells. Three recessive extragenic mutations that suppress trm6-504 mutant phenotypes and restore hypomodified tRNAiMet to near normal levels were identified. The wild-type allele of …

Real-Time Sound Source Separation: Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle Jan 2004

Real-Time Sound Source Separation: Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

We present a real-time sound source separation algorithm which performs the task of source separation based on the lateral displacement of a source within the stereo field. The algorithm exploits the use of the pan pot as a means to achieve image localisation within stereophonic recordings. As such, only an interaural intensity difference exists between left and right channels for a single source. Gain scaling and phase cancellation techniques are used in the frequency domain to expose frequency dependent nulls across the Azimuth plane. The position of these nulls in conjuction with magnitude estimation and grouping techniques are then used …

An Efficient Phasiness Reduction Technique For Moderate Audio Time-Scale Modification, David Dorran, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor Jan 2004

An Efficient Phasiness Reduction Technique For Moderate Audio Time-Scale Modification, David Dorran, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor

Conference papers

Phase vocoder approaches to time-scale modification of audio introduce a reverberant/phasy artifact into the time-scaled output due to a loss in phase coherence between short-time Fourier transform (STFT) bins. Recent improvements to the phase vocoder have reduced the presence of this artifact, however, it remains a problem. A method of time-scaling is presented that results in a further reduction in phasiness, for moderate time-scale factors by taking advantage of some flexibility that exists in the choice of phase required so as to maintain horizontal phase coherence between related STFT bins. Furthermore, the approach leads to a reduction in computational load …

Harmonic Sound Source Separation Using Fir Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle Jan 2004

Harmonic Sound Source Separation Using Fir Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

A technique for separating harmonic sound sources using FIR comb filters is presented. First, a pre-processing task is performed by a multipitch estimator to detect the pitches that the signal is composed of. Then, a method based on the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is utilized to iteratively extract the harmonics belonging to a given source by using FIR comb filters. The presented approach improves upon exising sinusoidal model approaches in terms of the perceptual quality of the extracted signal.

Sound Source Separation: Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor Jan 2004

Sound Source Separation: Azimuth Discrimination And Resynthesis, Dan Barry, Robert Lawlor

Conference papers

This paper discusses a novel sound source separation algorithm which requires no prior knowledge, no learning, assisted or otherwise and performs the task of separation based purely on Azimuth discrimination within the stereo field. The algorithm exploits the use of the pan pot as a means to achieve image localisation within stereophonic recordings. As such, only an interaural intensity difference exists between left and right channels for a single source. The authors use gain scaling and phase cancellation techniques to expose frequency dependent nulls across the Azimuth domain from which source separation and resynthesis is carried out. Results are presented …

Single Note Ornaments Transcription For The Irish Tin Whistle Based On Onset Detection, Mikel Gainza, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor

Conference papers

Oranamentation plays a very important role in Irish traditional music giving more expression to the music by altering or embellishing small pieces of a melody. Single-note ornamentation, such as cuts and strikes, are the most common type in Irish traditional music and are played by articulating the note pitch during the onset stage. A technique for transcribing single note ornamentation for the tin whistle is based on onset detection is presented. This method focuses on the characteristics of the tin whistle within Irish traditional music, customising a time-frequency based representation for detecting the instant when new notes played using single …

Onset Detection And Music Transcription For The Irish Tin Whistle, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle, Aileen Kelleher Jan 2004

Onset Detection And Music Transcription For The Irish Tin Whistle, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle, Aileen Kelleher

Conference papers

A technique for detecting tin whistle note onsets and transcribing the corresponding pitches is presented. This method focuses on the characteristics of the tin whistle within Irish traditional music, customising a time-frequency based representation for extracting the instant when a note starts and the music notation. Results show that the presented approach improves upon the existing energy based approaches in terms of the percentage of correct detections.

Time-Scale Modification Of Music Using A Synchronized Subband/Time-Domain Approach, David Dorran, Robert Lawlor Jan 2004

Time-Scale Modification Of Music Using A Synchronized Subband/Time-Domain Approach, David Dorran, Robert Lawlor

Conference papers

Time-domain audio time-scaling algorithms are efficient in comparison to their frequency-domain counterparts, but they rely upon the existence of a quasi-periodic signal to produce a high quality output. This requirement makes them unsuitable for direct application to complex multi-pitched signals such as polyphonic music. However, it has been shown that applying time-domain algorithms on a subband basis can resolve this issue. Existing subband/time domain approaches result in a reverberant/phasy artifact being introduced into the output due to poor synchronization between time-scaled subbands. This paper presents a number of synchronization schemes that greatly reduce the amount of reverberation/phasiness introduced into the …

Personality Characteristics Of Bulimic Behavior In College Women Analyzed With The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Lori Lyn Anderson Jan 2004

Personality Characteristics Of Bulimic Behavior In College Women Analyzed With The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Lori Lyn Anderson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Eating disorders are a growing phenomenon in today's society, and adolescent women are prime candidates for this disorder. The present research study is designed to analyze bulimic behavior in college age women by administrating the Eating Disorder Inventory- 2 (Gamer, 1991), specifically focusing on the bulimia sub scale of this self-reported inventory. The purpose of the study is to measure specialized temperamental characteristics of persons demonstrating bulimic behavior as analyzed using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (Myers-Briggs & McCaulley, 1986). The researcher surveyed 221 women from psychology classes at a private Midwest university, and each woman completed both the Eating …
