Developing A Digital Archive With Limited Resources, Greg Sennema

Library Publications

This article describes how a small liberal arts college library created a digital library using existing staff and financial resources. The Hekman Digital Archive (HDA) was created using a digital media archive module of the library’s ILS, and is maintained by one library staff member with the help of numerous student assistants.

Performance Metrics For Freeway Sensors, Christos D. Achillides, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

Performance measures play a critical role in the operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), because they provide feedback to the operators regarding system operations and efficiency. Traffic management systems use archived data, provided by various sensors, as a basis for describing normal conditions and predicting traffic conditions that may be expected at a particular time and place in the highway system. However, data quality is one of the principal concerns of archived ITS data users for the following reasons: 1) Manual inspection techniques are unable to detect significant errors because of the large volume of ITS data; 2) Only minimal …

Quality Control Procedures For Weigh-In-Motion Data, Andrew P. Nichols, Darcy M. Bullock Jan 2004

Quality Control Procedures For Weigh-In-Motion Data, Andrew P. Nichols, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

For the past two decades, weigh-in-motion (WIM) sensors have been used in the United States to collect vehicle weight data for designing pavements and monitoring their performance. The use of these sensors is now being expanded for enforcement purposes to provide virtual weigh stations for screening vehicles in traffic streams for overweight violations. A study found that static weigh stations in Indiana were effective for identifying safety violations, but ineffective for identifying overweight vehicles. It was also determined that the alternative approach to identifying overweight vehicles using virtual weigh stations requires a high level of WIM data accuracy and reliability …

Safety Of Intersections On High-Speed Road Segments With Superelevation, Peter T. Savolainen, Andrzej P. Tarko Jan 2004

Safety Of Intersections On High-Speed Road Segments With Superelevation, Peter T. Savolainen, Andrzej P. Tarko

JTRP Technical Reports

In recent years, the State of Indiana has built a number of intersections where one or both of the roads are located on curves. The AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets recommends that in such cases “the alignment should be as straight and the gradient as flat as practical.” This wording, consistent with Part V of the Indiana Design Manual, allows for the design of intersections on curves if other solutions prove to be too expensive. Several of these intersections have raised safety concerns and led to expensive corrective measures. Due to these safety and economic issues, …

Aeromedical Issues In Diabetic Aviators, Robert T. Keegan Iii, Bascom K. Bradshaw Jan 2004

Aeromedical Issues In Diabetic Aviators, Robert T. Keegan Iii, Bascom K. Bradshaw

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease that poses a serious health and safety threat to civilian aviators. Complications secondary to diabetes can be severe and result in sudden incapacitation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has developed regulations for certifying aviators with diabetes, as well as guidelines for in-flight management of blood glucose levels. Advances in medical technology have led to treatments and countermeasures for diabetes that enable many individuals to engage in physically and mentally demanding activities. This paper presents a basic overview of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of diabetes mellitus in civil aviators. In addition, current FAA regulations …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

TRANSMISSIBLE spongiform encephalopathies, of which ovine scrapie is a prototype, are neurodegenerative disorders characterised by the accumulation of an abnormal isoform (PrP-scrapie or PrPSc) of a normal cellular protein (PrPC) (Prusiner 1982). Characteristics of the disease include long incubation periods, and a progressive and chronic clinical course resulting in death (Fraser 1976). PrPsc is detectable during the preclinical stages of scrapie in peripheral lymph nodes (Ikegami and others 1991, Muramatsu and others 1993), in lymphoid follicles of the tonsils (Schreuder and others 1996) and in lymphoid follicles of the nictitating membrane or third eyelid (O'Rourke …

The Most Valuable Aspects Of An Airline Flight Operations Internship: The Perceptions Of Former Interns, Jose R. Ruiz Jan 2004

The Most Valuable Aspects Of An Airline Flight Operations Internship: The Perceptions Of Former Interns, Jose R. Ruiz

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

A large number of collegiate Aviation institutions throughout the United States maintain an airline flight operations internship program. “According to the University Aviation Association, students can choose [an airline flight operations internship] from among more than 270 two- or four-year accredited aviation colleges or universities" (Phillips, 1996, p. 43). A variety of authors have identified the benefits associated with these collegiate aviation and airline industry partnerships. For example, Bradley (1997) noted: "One of the keys for bridging the experience gap among young pilots is to develop closer cooperation between industry and schools, including establishing internship and work/educational cooperatives" (p. 80). …

Towards A Theory Of Journalism As Practice, Rhonda Breit Jan 2004

Towards A Theory Of Journalism As Practice, Rhonda Breit

Graduate School of Media and Communications

The State of the news media survey 2004 has found that journalists in the United States believe "business pressures are making the news they produce thinner and shallower" (Kovach, Rosenstiel & Mitchell, 2004, p. 1). In fact, Kovach et al (2004, p.2) state that an increasing number of journalists identify economics as their greatest concern, with 66 per cent 0/national journalists and 57 per cent of local journalists surveyed believing "increased bottom-line pressure is seriously hurting the quality of news coverage ", This paper seeks to provide a theoretical framework which explains this dilemma. The theory articulated challenges views 0/ …
