The Origin Of Fe Ii Emission In Active Galactic Nuclei, J. A. Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, K. T. Korista, F. Hamann, A. Lacluyzé

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We used a very large set of models of broad emission line region (BELR) clouds in active galactic nuclei to investigate the formation of the observed Fe II emission lines. We show that photoionized BELR clouds cannot produce both the observed shape and observed equivalent width of the 2200-2800 Å Fe II UV bump unless there is considerable velocity structure corresponding to a microturbulent velocity parameter vturb≥100 km s-1 for the locally optimally emitting cloud models used here. This could be either microturbulence in gas that is confined by some phenomenon such as MHD waves or a …

A Million Secondchandraview Of Cassiopeia A, Una Hwang, J. Martin Laming, Carles Badenes, Fred Berendse, John Blondin, Denis Cioffi, Tracey Delaney, Daniel Dewey, Robert Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We introduce a million second observation of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The bipolar structure of the Si-rich ejecta (northeast jet and southwest counterpart) is clearly evident in the new images, and their chemical similarity is confirmed by their spectra. These are most likely due to jets of ejecta as opposed to cavities in the circumstellar medium, since we can reject simple models for the latter. The properties of these jets and the Fe-rich ejecta will provide clues to the explosion of Cas A.

Evaluating Multi-Peril Crop Insurance Coverage, Roger Selley Nov 2004

Evaluating Multi-Peril Crop Insurance Coverage, Roger Selley

Cornhusker Economics

Past issues of this newsletter have addressed the assessment of crop insurance needs (March 11 and November 11, 1998). The approach suggested was to identify the cash flow commitments for the year and then to prioritize those commitments. The latter step was suggested recognizing that: 1) insurance coverage may not be available to cover all commitments, 2) even if sufficient coverage is available, premiums increase substantially as coverage is increased, and 3) the more insurance purchased the more risk transferred to the insurance company and the less profit potential retained by the farm operation. In a more recent issue the …

Environmental Effects On Corrosion Properties Of Alloy 22, K. S. Raja, L. G. Mcmillion, Shantanu A. Namjoshi, Paige Russel, Raymond E. Keeler, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

During the regulatory life of the Yucca Mountain High Level Nuclear Waste (HLNW) repository the primary engineered barrier that is to prevent release of radioactive material into the environment is proposed to be a Corrosion-Resistant Material (CRM) outer shell covering the Waste Package (WP) container. The current selection for the CRM is Alloy 22 (UNS N06022), a Ni-Cr-Mo-W-Fe alloy. Alloy 22 forms a defective chromic oxide passive film which results in excellent corrosion resistance; the presence of molybdenum in Alloy 22 offers corrosion resistance in reducing environments as well as oxidizing environments.

Performance Evaluation Of Multi-Product Kanban-Like Control Systems, Sachin S. Deokar Nov 2004

Performance Evaluation Of Multi-Product Kanban-Like Control Systems, Sachin S. Deokar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the years, much attention has been given to the analysis of the pull type ordering system to reduce in-process inventory and to improve product quality. Kanban Control Systems are widely used to control the release of parts in multi-stage manufacturing systems operating under a pull mechanism. Considerable research has been done to study the individual manufacturing systems for multi stage and single product. However, not much research has been done to compare different pull control policies for multi product manufacturing systems.

Most of the research done in multi-product system assumes that a kanban card is dedicated to a part …

Lake Stage Fluctuation Study In West-Central Florida Using Multiple Regression Models, Jie Gao Nov 2004

Lake Stage Fluctuation Study In West-Central Florida Using Multiple Regression Models, Jie Gao

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Multiple linear regression models were developed to calculate lake fluctuation that occurs between 10 percent, 50 percent, and 90 percent of the time lake surface elevation is exceeded. A total of 48 lakes were selected from Hillsborough, Pasco, Highlands and Polk counties, which were identified as natural lakes through the study the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) conducted in 1999 and 2002 to develop the models. "Natural lake" refers to lakes that were not impacted by ground water pumping.

Among these 48 lakes, 22 lakes from Hillsborough and Pasco counties sit in the coastal lowlands area. 26 lakes from …
