Abstract

The story of Siglufjörour (Siglufjordur), a north Iceland village that became the "Herring Capital of the World," provides a case study of complex interactions between physical, biological, and social systems. Siglufjörour's natural capital - a good harbor and proximity to prime herring grounds - contributed to its development as a major fishing center during the first half of the 20th century. This herring fishery was initiated by Norwegians, but subsequently expanded by Icelanders to such an extent that the fishery, and Siglufjörour in particular, became engines helping to pull the whole Icelandic economy. Machine cell formation is an important issue in industrial and manufacturing engineering. Properly assigned machine cells can improve manufacturing system efficiencies and decrease unnecessary material movement. To address the need for proper cell formation techniques a myriad of heuristics have been created that attempt to optimize the grouping of machines. Further, much industrial engineering research has been conducted on the application of simulation technology to manufacturing system evaluation.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the combination of traditional machine grouping heuristics with simulation technology and to create a generalized meta-model based upon this evaluation. This investigation analyzes the …

Agricultural Landowners' Lack Of Preference For Internet Extension, Jennifer L. Howell, Geoffrey B. Habron

Journal of Extension

Extension providers need to improve the communication of watershed conservation practices. In order to determine landowners' communication preference a survey was mailed to a random sample of landowners from four selected watersheds in Michigan. Four hundred three landowners from four agricultural watersheds completed the survey. A majority (77%) expressed support for written communication media, while a minority (19%) supported the Internet. Younger, more educated, more affluent landowners with home Internet access expressed more support for using the Internet. Results suggest that Extension staff need to provide more Internet training and experiences if the Internet is to contribute to watershed conservation.

Maintaining Healthy Boundaries When Working With At-Risk Audiences, Alayne Torretta

At-risk clients' needs may burn out the most diligent of people. To be most effective in making positive, healthy changes with at-risk audiences, Extension professionals must remember to maintain and reinforce healthy boundaries. This article reviews three types of boundaries, physical, mental, and emotional; describes healthy and unhealthy boundaries; and explains what to do if Extension professionals recognize unhealthy client boundaries.

Why Should 4-H Horse And Pony Youth Wear Certified Equestrian Helmets?, Katherine Mckee, Colleen Brady

This article reviews literature that pertains to the use and function of equestrian helmets. It provides health reasons that may be used to justify the use of equestrian helmets. The article covers equestrian injuries, helmet wearing habits, head injuries, and equestrian helmets. The authors use the information provided to advocate the use of helmets and to recommend that Extension professionals promote helmet use among youth equestrians.

Lessons From The Interpretation/ Misinterpretation Of John Ogbu’S Scholarship, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In November 2003, the Council on Anthropology and Education honored John Ogbu with the George and Louise Spindler Award, for exemplary and long-term contributions to educational anthropology. But in March 2003, a noted economist condemned Ogbu’s work as serving an “oppressive function.” In this paper, such contradictory instances are cited as the author recounts his encounters with Ogbu’s scholarship. Disparate assessments of Ogbu’s ideas and legacy raise important questions. What responsibility do educational anthropologists have for how their research is understood? Which aspects of Ogbu’s legacy should we hold onto as his work is interpreted in politicized and polarized ways?

This paper investigates the efficiency of spectral metrics when used in spectral screening of hyperspectral imagery. Spectral screening is the technique of selecting from the data a subset of spectra such that any two spectra in the subset are dissimilar and, for any spectra in the original image cube, there is a similar spectra in the subset. The method can use various spectral metrics to characterize the similarity and can be seen as a data reduction step if the resulting subset is used in further computations instead of the full data. Second-Order Two-Dimensional Systems: Computing The Transfer Function, George E. Antoniou, Marinos T. Michael

In this paper the discrete Fourier transform is used to determine the coefficients of a transfer function of a new two-dimensional model of second-order: x(i1 + 2, i2 + 2) = A0 x(i 1 + 1, i2 + 1) + A1x(i1 + 1, i 2) +A2x(i1, i2 + 1). The algorithm is straightforward and has been implemented using the software package Matlab™. Two step-by-step examples illustrating the application of the algorithm are presented. © 2004 FEI STU.

Self-Disclosure In Intimate Relationships: Associations With Individual And Relationship Characteristics Over Time, Susan K. Sprecher, Susan S. Hendrick

Self-disclosure is an act of intimacy and serves as a maintenance strategy, and yet very little prior research has examined self-disclosure within relationships with data collected multiple times over an extended period of time and from both partners. With longitudinal data collected from both partners in young adult dating couples, we examined how self-disclosure is associated with both individual characteristics (e.g., responsiveness, self-esteem) and relationship characteristics (satisfaction, love, commitment). Overall, men and women indicated a similar high level of self-disclosure.
