Towards Applying Computational Complexity To Foundations Of Physics, Vladik Kreinovich, Andrei Finkelstein Dec 2004

Towards Applying Computational Complexity To Foundations Of Physics, Vladik Kreinovich, Andrei Finkelstein

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In one of his early papers, D. Grigoriev analyzed the decidability and computational complexity of different physical theories. This analysis was motivated by the hope that this analysis would help physicists. In this paper, we survey several similar ideas that may be of help to physicists. We hope that further research may lead to useful physical applications.

Monte-Carlo-Type Techniques For Processing Interval Uncertainty, And Their Geophysical And Engineering Applications, Matthew G. Averill, Kate C. Miller, George R. Keller, Vladik Kreinovich, Jan Beck, Roberto Araiza, Roberto Torres, Scott A. Starks

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To determine the geophysical structure of a region, we measure seismic travel times and reconstruct velocities at different depths from this data. There are several algorithms for solving this inverse problem, but these algorithms do not tell us how accurate these reconstructions are.

Traditional approach to accuracy estimation assumes that the measurement errors are independently normally distributed. Problem: the resulting accuracies are not in line with geophysical intuition. Reason: a typical error is when we miss the first arrival of the seismic wave; it is not normal (bounded by the wave period T) and not independent.

Typically, all we know …

Field Evaluation Of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Strengthened With Frp Composites Subjected To Out-Of-Plane Loading, Gustavo Tumialan, Davide Tinazzi, John J. Myers, Antonio Nanni Dec 2004

Field Evaluation Of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Strengthened With Frp Composites Subjected To Out-Of-Plane Loading, Gustavo Tumialan, Davide Tinazzi, John J. Myers, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls at a decommissioned building in St. Louis, Missouri were tested to failure. the walls belonging to the present experimental program were subjected to out-of-plane loading. Previous work on URM and reinforced masonry walls strengthened with FRP laminates has shown remarkable increases in capacity and ductility. However, most of this research has been conducted under laboratory conditions, where, many times, it is a difficult task to represent real field conditions. in this context, this experimental program offered a singular opportunity for performing field experimentation on URM walls strengthened with Glass, Aramid and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP, …

Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury: Recovery Of Working Memory Function And Behavioral Adjustment, Gayle L. Crahen

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Children and adolescents with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) were the focus of this investigation using an extant data set. The 3 7 participants were between the ages of 5 and 15 years at the time of injury, and the majority had a severe TBI. Participants were evaluated soon after injury for a Baseline description of functioning on measures of cognition and memory and re-evaluated at one and/or two year return appointments. Parents provided estimates of adaptive, internalizing, and externalizing behaviors at Baseline and at follow-up appointments on the V ABS and CBCL. It was expected that parents' descriptions of …

The Transformation Of The Microfinance Sector In India: Experiences, Options, And Future, M. S. Siriaram, Rajesh S. Upadhyayula Dec 2004

The Transformation Of The Microfinance Sector In India: Experiences, Options, And Future, M. S. Siriaram, Rajesh S. Upadhyayula

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This paper discusses the growth and transformation of microfinance organizations (MFO) in India. Issues that have triggered transformation include size, diversity, sustainability, focus, and taxation. Transformation experiences in India are few. To move to the mainstream, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) choose from three popular forms of organizations: non-banking finance companies (NBFCs), banks, and cooperatives. It appears that there is no ideal path for spin-off. Regulatory changes are needed to allow MFOs to graduate to other legal forms as they grow organically. NGOs must be permitted to invest in the equity of MFOs, as is the case in Bolivia and Africa. Norms …

Realizing Mission Objectives: A Promising Approach To Measuring The Social Performance Of Microfinance Institutions, Katarzyna Pawlak, Michal Matul Dec 2004

Realizing Mission Objectives: A Promising Approach To Measuring The Social Performance Of Microfinance Institutions, Katarzyna Pawlak, Michal Matul

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This paper proposes a new approach for measuring the social performance of microfinance institutions. The key to developing sustainable social performance measurement (SPM) systems and practices is to consider their design from the perspective of the organizational mission. The fact that the SPM system is built on the organizational mission ensures its cost-effectiveness and facilitates its institutionalization. It not only stimulates an MFI to verify the fulfilment of its social mission and to innovate in the search for optimal solutions to address development needs in a given intervention context, but it also can improve its financial condition through client segmentation …

Exogenous Vasotocin Alters Aggression During Agonistic Exchanges In Male Amargosa River Pupfish (Cyprinodon Nevadensis Amargosae), Sean C. Lema, Gabrielle A. Nevitt Dec 2004

Exogenous Vasotocin Alters Aggression During Agonistic Exchanges In Male Amargosa River Pupfish (Cyprinodon Nevadensis Amargosae), Sean C. Lema, Gabrielle A. Nevitt

Biological Sciences

Pupfishes in the Death Valley region have rapidly differentiated in social behaviors since their isolation in a series of desert streams, springs, and marshes less than 20,000 years ago. These habitats can show dramatic fluctuations in ecological conditions, and pupfish must cope with the changes by plastic physiological and behavioral responses. Recently, we showed differences among some Death Valley populations in brain expression of arginine vasotocin (AVT). As AVT regulates both hydromineral balance and social behaviors in other taxa, these population differences may indicate adaptive changes in osmoregulatory and/or behavioral processes. To test whether AVT is relevant for behavioral shifts …

High Statistics Search For The Θ+ (1.54) Pentaquark State, M. J. Longo, Timothy Holmstrom, Hypercp Collaboration Dec 2004

High Statistics Search For The Θ+ (1.54) Pentaquark State, M. J. Longo, Timothy Holmstrom, Hypercp Collaboration

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

We have searched for θ+(1.54)→K0p decays using data from the 1999 run of the HyperCP experiment at Fermilab. We see no evidence for a narrow peak in the KS0p mass distribution near 1.54  GeV/c among 106 000 KS0p candidates, and obtain an upper limit for the fraction of θ+(1.54) to KS0p candidates of

Standard Penetration Test-Based Probabilistic And Deterministic Assessment Of Seismic Soil Liquefaction Potential, K. Onder Cetin, Raymond B. Seed, Armen Der Kiureghian, Kohji Tokimatsu, Leslie F. Harder, Jr., Robert E. Kayen, Robb E. S. Moss

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This paper presents new correlations for assessment of the likelihood of initiation (or “triggering”) of soil liquefaction. These new correlations eliminate several sources of bias intrinsic to previous, similar correlations, and provide greatly reduced overall uncertainty and variance. Key elements in the development of these new correlations are (1) accumulation of a significantly expanded database of field performance case histories; (2) use of improved knowledge and understanding of factors affecting interpretation of standard penetration test data; (3) incorporation of improved understanding of factors affecting site-specific earthquake ground motions (including directivity effects, site-specific response, etc.); (4) use of improved methods for …

Effects Of Signal Processing And Antenna Frequency On The Geostatistical Structure Of Ground-Penetrating Radar Data, Greg A. Oldenborger, Michael D. Knoll, Warren Barrash Dec 2004

Effects Of Signal Processing And Antenna Frequency On The Geostatistical Structure Of Ground-Penetrating Radar Data, Greg A. Oldenborger, Michael D. Knoll, Warren Barrash

CGISS Publications and Presentations

Recent research has suggested that the geostatistical structure of ground-penetrating radar data may be representative of the spatial structure of hydraulic properties. However, radar images of the subsurface can change drastically with application of signal processing or by changing the signal frequency. We perform geostatistical analyses of surface radar reflection profiles in order to investigate the effects of data processing and antenna frequency on the semivariogram structure of radar reflection amplitudes. Surface radar reflection data collected at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site illustrate the processing- and antenna-dependence of radar semivariograms for a fluvial, cobble-and-sand aquifer. Compensating for signal attenuation and …
