Qsar Study Of Skin Sensitization Using Local Lymph Node Assay Data, Adam Fedorowicz, Lingyi Zheng, Harshinder Singh, Eugene Demchuk

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) is a common work-related skin disease that often develops as a result of repetitive skin exposures to a sensitizing chemical agent. A variety of experimental tests have been suggested to assess the skin sensitization potential. We applied a method of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) to relate measured and calculated physical-chemical properties of chemical compounds to their sensitization potential. Using statistical methods, each of these properties, called molecular descriptors, was tested for its propensity to predict the sensitization potential. A few of the most informative descriptors were subsequently selected to build a model of skin sensitization. In …

Electrostatic Potential On Human Leukocyte Antigen: Implications For Putative Mechanism Of Chronic Beryllium Disease., James A. Snyder, Ainsley Weston, Sally S. Tinkle, Eugene Demchuk

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The pathobiology of chronic beryllium disease (CBD) involves the major histocompatibility complex class II human leukocyte antigen (HLA). Although occupational exposure to beryllium is the cause of CBD, molecular epidemiologic studies suggest that specific (Italic)HLA-DPB1(/Italic) alleles may be genetic susceptibility factors. We have studied three-dimensional structural models of HLA-DP proteins encoded by these genes. The extracellular domains of HLA-DPA1*0103/B1*1701, *1901, *0201, and *0401, and HLA-DPA1*0201/B1*1701, *1901, *0201, and *0401 were modeled from the X-ray coordinates of an HLA-DR template. Using these models, the electrostatic potential at the molecular surface of each HLA-DP was calculated and compared. These comparisons identify specific …

Attoc159 Is A Selective Transit Peptide Receptor For The Import Of Nucleus-Encoded Chloroplast Proteins, Matthew D. Smith, Caleb M. Rounds, Fei Wang, Kunhua Chen, Meshack Afitlhile, Danny J. Schnell

Biology Faculty Publications

The members of the Toc159 family of GTPases act as the primary receptors for the import of nucleus-encoded preproteins into plastids. Toc159, the most abundant member of this family in chloroplasts, is required for chloroplast biogenesis (Bauer, J., K. Chen, A. Hiltbrunner, E. Wehrli, M. Eugster, D. Schnell, and F. Kesller, 2000, Nature, 403: 203-207) and has been shown to covalently cross-link to bound preproteins at the chloroplast surface (Ma, Y., A. Kouranov, S. LaSala, and D.J. Schnell, 1996, J. Cell Biol. 134: 1-13; Perry, S.E., and K. Keegstra, 1994, Plant Cell. 6: 93-105). These reports led to the …

Sedimentology And Geochemistry Of An Urban Coastal Lake System: Coombabah Lake Nature Reserve, Gold Coast, Queensland, Tracy D. Frank, Christopher R. Fielding Jan 2004

Sedimentology And Geochemistry Of An Urban Coastal Lake System: Coombabah Lake Nature Reserve, Gold Coast, Queensland, Tracy D. Frank, Christopher R. Fielding

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A study was initiated to address environmental concerns associated with changes in land use in the catchment area of Coombabah Lake, a brackish coastal lake system located in southeast Queensland. Sedimentological and geochemical data derived from a series of cores that penetrate the ca. 0–6000 year-old lacustrine sequence indicate that throughout much of its history, Coombabah Lake has remained a quiet, shallow, water body fed by fine-grained sediment dropped from suspension. Discrete and laterally continuous, shelly horizons form the basis for the stratigraphy developed for the lake sequence. A lithological transition in the upper 50 cm of the sediment column, …

A Docking Score Function For Estimating Ligand-Protein Interactions: Application To Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition, Jianxin Guo, Margaret M. Hurley, Jeffery B. Wright, Gerald H. Lushington

United States Army: Publications

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition is an important research topic because of its wide range of associated health implications. A receptor-specific scoring function was developed herein for predicting binding affinities for human AChE (huAChE) inhibitors. This method entails a statistically trained weighted sum of electrostatic and van der Waals (VDW) interactions between ligands and the receptor residues. Within the 53 ligand training set, a strong correlation was found (R2 = 0.89) between computed and experimental inhibition constants. Leave-oneout cross-validation indicated high predictive power (Q2 = 0.72), and analysis of a separate 16-compound test set also produced very good correlation with …

Pooled And Individual Bycatch Quotas: Exploring Tradeoffs Between Observer Coverage Levels, Bycatch Frequency, Pool Size, And The Precision Of Bycatch Estimates, Landon S. Jensen, Joe Koebbe, Keith R. Criddle Jan 2004

Pooled And Individual Bycatch Quotas: Exploring Tradeoffs Between Observer Coverage Levels, Bycatch Frequency, Pool Size, And The Precision Of Bycatch Estimates, Landon S. Jensen, Joe Koebbe, Keith R. Criddle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The North Pacific Ocean is highly productive, hosting many of the world's largest groundfish populations and supporting a thriving fishing industry. Numerous regulations have been implemented to control the incidental take of non-target bycatch. Individual and Pooled Bycatch Quotas have recently been proposed as instruments that could further encourage the avoidance of such bycatch and increase enforceability of by catch caps at less-than-entire-fishery levels of operation. The recent advent of fishing cooperatives such as the Pacific Whiting Conservation Cooperative and the Pollock Conservation Cooperatives create an additional impetus for examining the characteristics of pool and vessel specific bycatch quotas. We …

The Equivalence Of Evolutionary Games And Distributed Monte Carlo Learning, Yuya Sasaki Jan 2004

The Equivalence Of Evolutionary Games And Distributed Monte Carlo Learning, Yuya Sasaki

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper presents a tight relationship between evolutionary game theory and distributed intelligence models. After reviewing some existing theories of replicator dynamics and distributed Monte Carlo learning, we make fonnulations and proofs of the equivalence between these two models. The relationship will be revealed not only from a theoretical viewpoint, but also by experimental simulations of the models by taking a simple symmetric zero-sum game as an example. As a consequence, it will be verified that seemingly chaotic macro dynamics generated by distributed micro-decisions can be explained with theoretical models.
