Student's Perception Of Computer Tutorials When Reviewing For Exams, Kelly A. Keys Jan 2004

Student's Perception Of Computer Tutorials When Reviewing For Exams, Kelly A. Keys

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

I have spent the last year and a half learning the many aspects required when creating a dynamic student-centered classroom. I was very interested in the many topics that were presented to me in my graduate courses. This made it very difficult for me to narrow my research topic. As a result I find myself on a significantly different path than I had started on in September. Having had these rich experiences with differentiation and having tried many of the strategies I decided I would focus on some aspect of differentiation. however, this past fall I was enrolled in an …

Minnesota Banded Darters (Etheostoma Zonale) Exhibit A High Degree Of Genetic Similarity In Mitochondrial Dna Sequences Occurrence, Jean Porterfield, Molly Fee, Jessica Theorin Jan 2004

Minnesota Banded Darters (Etheostoma Zonale) Exhibit A High Degree Of Genetic Similarity In Mitochondrial Dna Sequences Occurrence, Jean Porterfield, Molly Fee, Jessica Theorin

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Hylogeography, or the historical interpretation of population genetic data, is a useful tool for addressing historical processes like the colonization history of organisms. North American freshwater fishes have experienced glacial ebb and flow in their relatively recent past (as little as 10,000 years before present in Minnesota), and studies of variation in intraspecific DNA sequences of these fishes can shed light on their radiations into previously glaciated areas. This study assessed intraspecific variation in two mitochondrial genes of the banded darter (Etheostoma zonale) from seven Minnesota localities. A high degree of similarity was found among all individuals in the study. …

Synthesis Of Texaphyrin Conjugates, D. J. Magda, Z. Wang, Nikolay Gerasimchuk, W. H. Wei, P. Anzenbacher, J. L. Sessler

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

This paper summarizes recent synthetic efforts devoted to the generation of new, second-generation texaphyrin-type drugs, specifically species that involve known or potential anticancer agents covalently attached to a tumor-localizing texaphyrin core. Particular emphasis will be placed on the strategies needed to prepare such systems, as well as on the choice of active group being subject to attachment.

A Wrky Gene From Creosote Bush Encodes An Activator Of The Abscisic Acid Signaling Pathway, Xiaolu Zou, Jeffrey R. Seemann, Dawn Neuman, Qingxi J. Shen Jan 2004

A Wrky Gene From Creosote Bush Encodes An Activator Of The Abscisic Acid Signaling Pathway, Xiaolu Zou, Jeffrey R. Seemann, Dawn Neuman, Qingxi J. Shen

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) is a xerophytic evergreen C3 shrub thriving in vast arid areas of North America. As the first step toward understanding the molecular mechanisms controlling the drought tolerance of this desert plant, we have isolated a dozen genes encoding transcription factors, including LtWRKY21 that encodes a protein of 314 amino acid residues. Transient expression studies with the GFP-LtWRKY21 fusion construct indicate that the LtWRKY21 protein is localized in the nucleus and is able to activate the promoter of an abscisic acid (ABA)-inducible gene, HVA22, in a dosage-dependent manner. The transactivating activity of LtWRKY21 …

A New Species Of Nanodacna Clarke (Lepidoptera: Elachistldae: Agonoxeninae) Feeding On The Seeds Of Austrocedrus Chilensis (Cupressaceae) In Andean Argentina, Jean-Francois Landry, David Adamski Jan 2004

A New Species Of Nanodacna Clarke (Lepidoptera: Elachistldae: Agonoxeninae) Feeding On The Seeds Of Austrocedrus Chilensis (Cupressaceae) In Andean Argentina, Jean-Francois Landry, David Adamski

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Charaders of the adult, larva, and pupa of Nanodacna allstrocedrella Landry & Adamski, new species, are described and illustrated. The seed-feeding larvae cause damage to Andean Cedar, cipres de la cordillera [Austrocedrus chilcnsis (D. Don.) Fl. & Bout., Cupressaceae] in Chubut Province, Argentina. The species is compared to other species of Nanodacna and to species of Hornoeoprepes Walsingham from the Neotropics. Criteria for its inclusion in Nanodacna and the phylogenetic Significance of characters of immature stages for relationships within the Agonoxeninae are discussed.

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

The collection of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., is second only to that of The Natural History Museum (formerly British Museum of Natural History), London, in the number of type specimens of the superfamily Gelechioidea (Lepidoptera). The Smithsonian houses 1,375 gelechioid types: 1,249 holotypes, 48 lectotypes, 1 neotype, 69 species represented by one or more syntypes, and 8 species represented by one or more "pseudotypes" (Le., specimens identified as "type" by an accompanying label that are unlikely to be the type). Three former curators are responsible for the vast majority of the type specimens: August …

Mem's Optical Pyrometer, Edward Camacho Jan 2004

Mem's Optical Pyrometer, Edward Camacho

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Measuring temperature accurately has been and still is a topic of interest in various professional fields such as Astronomy, Biology, Physics and Medicine. An optical pyrometer has great potential in these fields, because it can optically capture a body’s black body radiation and determine a temperature value of the body in question. This technology is well known, yet it is still gaining grounds as new uses are found. In this project a temperature sensor using Mentor Graphics was design, second a four level mask was made into one reticle. Third fabrication of the optical sensor took place using typical process …

Cultural Influences On The Formation Of Interpersonal Intentions, Susan Polanco Jan 2004

Cultural Influences On The Formation Of Interpersonal Intentions, Susan Polanco

McNair Scholars Journal

The formation of interpersonal intentions has been a central theme in socialpsychological research for over twenty years. Existing psychological models propose that attitudes, social norms, and moral obligations often combine to form intentions. These models will be utilized to develop individual indexes of the relative influence of attitudes, norms, and moral obligations in forming intentions. These indexes will then be correlated with measures of locus of control, selfmonitoring, and individualism-collectivism in order to explore the extent to which personal and cultural factors influence the intention-formation process.

Explanations For The Decline In Child Sexual Abuse Cases., David Finkelhor, Lisa M. Jones

Crimes Against Children Research Center

Discusses the decline in the number of sexual abuse cases substantiated by child protective service agencies between 1992 and 2000. This OJJDP Crimes Against Children Bulletin explores the strengths and weaknesses of six possible explanations for the decline by using data from a number of different sources: aggregate data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System; detailed child protective service data from Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon, and Pennsylvania; and self-report data from the National Crime Victimization Survey and from schoolchildren in Minnesota.
