Renesting Decisions And Annual Fecundity Of Female Dickcissels (Spiza Americana) In Illinois, Jeffery W. Walk, Kevin Wentworth, Eric L. Kershner, Eric K. Bollinger, Richard E. Warner Jan 2004

Renesting Decisions And Annual Fecundity Of Female Dickcissels (Spiza Americana) In Illinois, Jeffery W. Walk, Kevin Wentworth, Eric L. Kershner, Eric K. Bollinger, Richard E. Warner

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

T.-Renesting decisions and annual fecundity are crucial for interpreting other demographic information, yet are infrequently reported. We used radiotelemetry to monitor female Dickcissels (Spiza americana) throughout the 1999 and 2000 breeding seasons in south- eastern Illinois. Overall fecundity (regardless of whether females remained in the study area throughout the breeding season) was 0.61 ? 0.13 female fledglings per year. Of females that re- mained within the study area, 94% fledged young (1.25 ? 0.15 female fledglings per year). Most females (62%) that experienced nest failure emigrated from the study area (moved >10 km) in 2.8 ? 0.6 days; others (36%) …

Molecular Typing Of Mycobacterial Isolates Cultured From The Tissue Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease) Patients, Leanne M. Adams Jan 2004

Molecular Typing Of Mycobacterial Isolates Cultured From The Tissue Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease) Patients, Leanne M. Adams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis (MAP) in the etiology and pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn's Disease (CD), has been investigated. The fastidious characteristics and cross reactivity of MAP with other members in Mycobacteria have produced significant challenges in their detection and identification. In this two year pilot study, an array of three PCR molecular assays based on the detection of sequences from the16S rRNA, IS1245, and IS900 genes, belonging to members of the MAC, have been developed and optimized into a common protocol to be used as a rapid and accurate diagnostic tool regarding M. …

Interactions Between The Nudibranch Okenia Zoobotryon And Its Bryozoan, Nicole Robinson Jan 2004

Interactions Between The Nudibranch Okenia Zoobotryon And Its Bryozoan, Nicole Robinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the Indian River Lagoon, the nudibranch Okenia zoobotryon and its egg masses are found attached to the bryozoan Zoobotryon verticillatum throughout the year. Okenia zoobotryon is thought to live, feed, and reproduce exclusively on Z. verticillatum, which would make this a very specialized predator-prey interaction. The primary goal of my study was to document certain aspects of the ecological and chemical relationships between Z. verticillatum and O. zoobotryon. Specifically, I wanted to understand the cues used by the nudibranch to locate and remain on Z. verticillatum. Population surveys on Z. verticillatum, as well as other potential hosts, were performed. …

Extracullular Atp Regulates Il-1beta Release From Microglial Cells Via Purinergic Receptor After In Vitro Trauma, Chengya Liang Jan 2004

Extracullular Atp Regulates Il-1beta Release From Microglial Cells Via Purinergic Receptor After In Vitro Trauma, Chengya Liang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces a state of microglialactivation, which includes upregulation of macrophage functions and release inflammatory mediators such as certain inflammatory cytokines. Current literature suggests that interleukin-1Beta is an important cytokine mediator, which is dramatically increased after brain injury. Previous studies indicate that ATP is released by traumatically injured astrocytes and serves as a cell-to-cell mediator through purinergic receptors after in vitro injury. However, the mechanism of interleukin-1Beta release after traumatic brain injury remains poorly defined and is difficult to study using in vivo models. Using an in vitro model for traumatic brain injury (cell strain or stretch), …

Synthesis Of The Novel Crown Ether 1 ,9-Dioxa-4,6-Dithiacycloundecane, Cassie Booth Jan 2004

Synthesis Of The Novel Crown Ether 1 ,9-Dioxa-4,6-Dithiacycloundecane, Cassie Booth

Capstone Research Projects

Attempts to produce novel crowns, incorporating a thioacetal fragment, were made via two synthetic pathways. Despite the well-established reactions found in path A (see figure 3), this method failed to produce the desired crown. Path B, a one-pot reaction originally designed to close rings via the addition of a thioacetal fragment, yielded an oily product that was purified with a silica gel column (48.3% yield). Initial analysis by 1H NMR showed a structure consistent with that of the desired crown (figure 2). Mass spectroscopy was used to verify product identity, confirming the creation of our target molecule 1 ,9-dioxa-4,6-dithiacycloundecane.

An Investigation Into The Effects Of Structural Isomers Of Salicylic Acid On Propionibacterium Acnes, Ireland Burch Jan 2004

An Investigation Into The Effects Of Structural Isomers Of Salicylic Acid On Propionibacterium Acnes, Ireland Burch

Capstone Research Projects

Acne is caused when the sebaceous glands in the skin are unable to secrete an oily substance, called sebum, onto the surface of the skin. This is because the opening of the follicle is clogged from a mixture of skin cells and sebum. The opening of the follicle becomes plugged when the cells from the lining of the follicle are shed too quickly and clump together. Because Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria feed off sebum, they are then able to grow in the plugged follicle. Acne is caused by the inflammation that results from the chemicals and enzymes produced from …

Analysis Of Common Tick Species Collected From The Chattanooga-Hamilton Region Of Tennessee And The Correlation To Reported Cases Of Tick-Borne Diseases, Astrid Von-Walter Jan 2004

Analysis Of Common Tick Species Collected From The Chattanooga-Hamilton Region Of Tennessee And The Correlation To Reported Cases Of Tick-Borne Diseases, Astrid Von-Walter

Capstone Research Projects

Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes scapularis, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus are three-host ticks commonly found in the Chattanooga-Hamilton region of Tennessee. The first three species are medically important because they are known to transmit Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Lyme disease, respectively. Rhipicephalus is not known to vector any pathogens infecting humans; therefore, not clinically significant. The focus of this study was to correlate the population of A. americanum, D. variabilis, and I. scapularis in the Chattanooga region to reported cases of tick -borne diseases. There was a direct relationship between the frequency of D. variabilis and the reported cases …

Using Lc-Ms With De Novo Software To Fully Characterize The Multiple Methylations Of Lysine Residues In A Recombinant Fragment Of An Outer Membrane Protein From A Virulent Strain Of Rickettsia Prowazekii, Chien-Chung Chao, Shiaw-Lin Wu, Wei-Mei Ching Jan 2004

Using Lc-Ms With De Novo Software To Fully Characterize The Multiple Methylations Of Lysine Residues In A Recombinant Fragment Of An Outer Membrane Protein From A Virulent Strain Of Rickettsia Prowazekii, Chien-Chung Chao, Shiaw-Lin Wu, Wei-Mei Ching

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The outer membrane protein B (OmpB) of the typhus group rickettsiae is an immunodominant antigen and has been shown to provide protection against typhus in animal models. Consequently, OmpB is currently being considered as a potential rickettsiae vaccine candidate to be used in humans. The OmpB from virulent strains are heavily methylated while the attenuated strains are hypomethylated. Western blot analysis of partially digested OmpB revealed that one of the reactive fragments was located at the N-terminus (fragment A, aa 33–272). Recently, we have over expressed, purified, and chemically methylated the recombinant fragment A from Rickettsia prowazekii (Ap). The methylated …

Quest For Cash: Exempt Organizations, Joint Ventures, Taxable Subsidiaries, And Unrelated Business Income, J. Patrick Plunkett, Heidi Neff Christianson Jan 2004

Quest For Cash: Exempt Organizations, Joint Ventures, Taxable Subsidiaries, And Unrelated Business Income, J. Patrick Plunkett, Heidi Neff Christianson

William Mitchell Law Review

Most “for-profit” or “business” activities of exempt organizations take one of three forms: (A) The exempt organization may undertake to perform the business activities within the existing structure of the exempt organization. (B) The exempt organization may form a “taxable” subsidiary or affiliate which will perform the business activities. (C) The exempt organization may “partner” with other individuals and entities (both nonprofit and for-profit) to form a corporation, limited liability company (LLC), partnership, joint venture, strategic alliance, or other collaborative effort which will perform the “for-profit” activities. Depending in part upon which of these forms is chosen, any business activities …

Systematic And Comparative Anatomy Of Maxillarieae (Orchidaceae), Sans Oncidiinae, William Louis Stern, Walter S. Judd, Barbara S. Carlsward

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

On the basis of floral and vegetative morphology, 63 tropical American genera have been recognized within Maxillarieae. We were able to examine anatomical material of all subtribes, excluding Oncidiinae. Stegmata with conical silica bodies occur in leaves and stems of all subtribes excluding Ornithocephalinae, and pericyclic stegmata found in roots are characteristic of Lycastinae. Lycastinae and Maxillariinae are characterized by foliar glands, foliar fibre bundles and tilosomes. Endodermal cells are U-thickened in most Zygopetalinae; O-thickened in most Lycastinae, Ornithocephalinae and Telipogoninae; variously thickened in Maxillariinae; and thin-walled in Cryptarrhena lunata. Water-storage cells varied from thin-walled to variously banded throughout Maxillarieae. …

The Measurement Of Adolescent Depression, Leigh Roeger Jan 2004

The Measurement Of Adolescent Depression, Leigh Roeger

Shannon Research Press

Very broadly the general aims of this study are: to examine whether the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) measures depressive symptomatology equivalently across adolescent boys and girls; and to examine whether schools exert effects on student levels of depressive symptomatology independently of individual level characteristics. In the course of this study quite a number of subsidiary questions are also addressed. Most of these questions centre around the psychometric properties of the CES-D scale when used with adolescent samples.
