Reindeer Inspire: New Teaching Guide, Doreen Fitzgerald

Miscellaneous Publications

When Elsa the reindeer first stepped into the classroom, handler Greg Finstad had no idea where that first educational excursion would lead. Now, five years later, the Reindeer Research Program (RRP) has published Reindeer Roundup! A K-12 Educator's Guide to Reindeer in Alaska. Development of the curriculum, complete with book, CD-ROM, and instructional kit, was supported by the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, and the UAF College of Rural Alaska, with considerable support also coming from the SNRAS Reindeer Research Program.

Mechanisms Involved In The Cold Tolerant Trichoderma Atroviride Biocontrol, Mingyuan Cheng Apr 2004

Mechanisms Involved In The Cold Tolerant Trichoderma Atroviride Biocontrol, Mingyuan Cheng

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

Trichoderma atroviride is a cold tolerant fungus that parasitizes a wide range of plant pathogenic fungi. The mechanisms involved in biocontrol by T. atroviride are only partially understood. This research evaluated the effect of four different groups of plant pathogenic fungi (Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora capsici, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) on enzyme expression at 22C and 7C. The enzymes expressed (proteinase and endo-beta-1,3-glucanase) were purified and characterized, and three 73 kDa N-acetyl-beta- D-glucosaminidase genes from three different T. atroviride biotypes were sequenced. The R-1,6-glucanase profiles and the regulation of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidases by plant pathogenic fungi were also studied. I document the …

Carbon Cycling In Three Mature Black Spruce ( Picea Mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) Forests In Interior Alaska, Jason Gene Vogel Apr 2004

Carbon Cycling In Three Mature Black Spruce ( Picea Mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) Forests In Interior Alaska, Jason Gene Vogel

Natural Resources

Climate warming in high latitudes is expected to alter the carbon cycle of the boreal forest. Warming will likely increase the rate of organic matter decomposition and microbial respiration. Faster organic matter decomposition should increase plant available nutrients and stimulate plant growth. I examined these predicted relationships between C cycle components in three similar black spruce forests (Picea mariana [Mill] B.S.P) near Fairbanks, Alaska, that differed in soil environment and in-situ decomposition. As predicted, greater in-situ decomposition rates corresponded to greater microbial respiration and black spruce aboveground growth. However root and soil respiration were both greater at the site where …

Utilizing Multi-Source Abundance Estimation And Climate Variability To Forecast Pacific Salmon Populations, Stacey Anne Shotwell Apr 2004

Utilizing Multi-Source Abundance Estimation And Climate Variability To Forecast Pacific Salmon Populations, Stacey Anne Shotwell

Fisheries

Data limitation is a common property of many fisheries. Some Pacific salmon populations are a typical example of this situation because the monitoring of numerous tributaries within an area becomes logistically intractable. Fishery management often responds to this scenario with qualitative stock assessments in the form of harvest projections In some cases, fishery data, although limited, exists in a variety of sources and may be integrated to develop quantitative population estimates. The first objective of this investigation is to generate a modeling process that combines multiple data sources to estimate abundance and escapement estimates for data-limited salmon populations. Second, we …

Gulf Of Alaska Pacific Ocean Perch: Stock Assessment, Survey Design And Sampling, Dana Henry Hanselman Apr 2004

Gulf Of Alaska Pacific Ocean Perch: Stock Assessment, Survey Design And Sampling, Dana Henry Hanselman

Fisheries

Pacific ocean perch (Sebastes alutus) stock size in the Gulf of Alaska has been difficult to assess because of an imprecise survey biomass index. This imprecision has been attributed to low sampling effort on a species with an aggregated distribution. In this thesis, I examined the importance of estimated survey biomass in the stock assessment and ways to improve them. First, I presented the complete stock assessment for 2003, with an analysis of uncertainty. Uncertain parameters included natural mortality, recruitment, and biomass estimates. Second, I examined adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) as a method to reduce survey uncertainty. ACS results provided …

Blinded By Riches: The Prudhoe Bay Effect, Terrence Cole Apr 2004

Blinded By Riches: The Prudhoe Bay Effect, Terrence Cole

ISER Reports

Alaska has repeatedly been saved by surprise developments or events. Prudhoe Bay oil was by far the largest such development—worth seven times more than all previous Alaska resource value combined. But the enormous value of Prudhoe Bay oil—the “Prudhoe Bay effect”—has blinded Alaskans to the perennial dilemma created by relying on temporary resource revenues. Now, with oil revenues declining, Alaska once again has a budget crisis. But today there’s a crucial difference that can be summed up in two words: Permanent Fund. Figure 1 shows why Prudhoe Bay oil gave Alaska an opportunity unlike any previous development.

The Morel Mushroom Industry In Alaska: Current Status And Potential, Tricia Wurtz, Amy Lynn Wiita Apr 2004

The Morel Mushroom Industry In Alaska: Current Status And Potential, Tricia Wurtz, Amy Lynn Wiita

ISER Reports

Morel mushrooms (Morchella spp.) collected in the U.S. Pacific Northwest are a non-timber forest product with considerable economic significance. Little information exists on the commercial harvest potential of morel mushrooms in Alaska’s boreal forest. We investigated current uses of morels in Alaska, the potential for and constraints to development of an Alaska morel industry and potential resource management and business development implications. We found that the morel mushroom industry in Alaska is small with few morel harvesters. Morels are harvested for personal and commercial use. Commercial morel harvesting is minimal due to the inaccessibility and unreliable production of morels and …
