Battered Non-Wives And Unequal Protection Order Coverage: A Call For Reform, Judith A. Smith

ExpressO

Civil protection orders are effective, yet under-used weapons in the battle against domestic violence. In New York and in other states as well, civil orders of protection provide unique benefits and remedies to domestic violence victims that are in addition to, or that are in place of, the benefits the criminal system offers. They are under used in part because they are not available to all victims. In every state, the availability of civil protection orders is limited to those victims who are in certain defined relationships. While many states have expanded their definitions of the types of relationships that …

Bayes Factors Based On Test Statistics, Valen Johnson Apr 2004

Bayes Factors Based On Test Statistics, Valen Johnson

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Traditionally, the use of Bayes factors has required the specification of proper prior distributions on model parameters implicit to both null and alternative hypotheses. In this paper, I describe an approach to defining Bayes factors based on modeling test statistics. Because the distributions of test statistics do not depend on unknown model parameters, this approach eliminates the subjectivity normally associated with the definition of Bayes factors. For standard test statistics, including the _2, F, t and z statistics, the values of Bayes factors that result from this approach can be simply expressed in closed form.

Development Of A Tool To Facilitate Participation Of Maori In The Management Of Stream And River Health, Colin R. Townsend

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

A cultural health index (CHI) for streams was developed in a program of collaborative research involving members of Ngai Tahu (an iwi [tribe] within the South Island of New Zealand) and ecologists at Otago University. The aim was to provide a tool for effective participation of Maori in resource management decisions. Five cultural values are of central importance to the nature of the CHI: mauri (spiritual life force), mahinga kai (traditional resource harvesting), kaitiakitanga (guardianship obligation), ki uta ki tai (mountains-to-the-sea holistic philosophy), and wai taonga waters that are treasured). The CHI has three components. Forty-six stream sites in two …

"Everybody Drinks Water": Mark Twain's Critique Of Social Darwinism, Sarah Vales '04

Honors Projects, History

Mark Twain wrote during the time period from approximately 1860 to 1900, commonly known as the Gilded Age. Change defined these years as America industrialized, urbanized, and expanded. Along with the change came an array of social problems, which produced a dichotomy between the outward success of the changes and the inward turmoil wrought on society.

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2004, James A. Dubovsky

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Observers counted 4,584 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during February 2004, an increase of 15% from the 3,974 counted in February 2003 and a record-high count for the Mid-winter Survey. The numbers of white birds (3,831) and cygnets (753) increased 12% and 38%, respectively, from counts last year. In the tristate area, increases in total swans occurred in all 3 states (Montana +56%; Idaho +10%; Wyoming +19%). The number of birds wintering in areas near restoration flocks was somewhat lower than counts in recent years, but much lower than during the early …
