Policies Governing Use Of Computing Technology In Academic Libraries, Jason Vaughan Dec 2004

Policies Governing Use Of Computing Technology In Academic Libraries, Jason Vaughan

Library Faculty Research

The networked computing environment is a vital resource for academic libraries. Ever-increasing use dictates the prudence of having a comprehensive computer-use policy in force. Universities often have an overarching policy or policies governing the general use of computing technology that helps to safeguard the university equipment, software, and network against inappropriate use. Libraries often benefit from having an adjunct policy that works to emphasize the existence and important points of higher-level policies, while also providing a local context for systems and policies pertinent to the library in particular. Having computer-use policies at the university and library level helps provide a …

Lessons From The Interpretation/ Misinterpretation Of John Ogbu’S Scholarship, Edmund T. Hamann Dec 2004

Lessons From The Interpretation/ Misinterpretation Of John Ogbu’S Scholarship, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In November 2003, the Council on Anthropology and Education honored John Ogbu with the George and Louise Spindler Award, for exemplary and long-term contributions to educational anthropology. But in March 2003, a noted economist condemned Ogbu’s work as serving an “oppressive function.” In this paper, such contradictory instances are cited as the author recounts his encounters with Ogbu’s scholarship. Disparate assessments of Ogbu’s ideas and legacy raise important questions. What responsibility do educational anthropologists have for how their research is understood? Which aspects of Ogbu’s legacy should we hold onto as his work is interpreted in politicized and polarized ways?

Economic Analysis Prepared For The Environmental Impact Statement On Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Conservation And Management On The Nebraska National Forest And Associated Units, Martin Beutler

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This limited analysis resulted from a request by the Nebraska National Forest to provide some economic estimates to the value of changes in forage availability that would result from three proposed levels of rodenticide use in the management of black-tailed prairie dogs (BTPD) on the Nebraska National Forest (NNF) and associated units managed by NNF (i.e. Buffalo Gap National Grasslands, Ft. Pierre National Grasslands in South Dakota, and the Oglala National Grasslands in Nebraska.) The values of changes in forage availability were determined based on three alternatives of rodenticide use. These alternatives include: (1) limit use of rodenticides to only …

Entering The U.S. Securities Markets: Regulation Of Non-U.S. Issuers, Barbara Black Dec 2004

Entering The U.S. Securities Markets: Regulation Of Non-U.S. Issuers, Barbara Black

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The U.S. securities markets offer the greatest opportunities for businesses that wish to raise additional capital or expand their shareholder base. Large non-U.S.corporations regularly tap the U.S. market for infusions of capital, and the securities of many non-U.S. corporations are listed on the New York Stock Exchange or traded on NASDAQ. Smaller non-U.S. entities, however, may be deterred from entering the U.S. markets because of concerns about the burdens of U.S. securities regulation. These concerns are legitimate: a decision to enter the highly-regulated U.S. securities markets should not be made lightly. For non-U.S. private issuers, perhaps the greatest difficulty in …

Classroom Warfare—Aicpa And Aacsb Vs. Legal Studies: Result: The New Cpa Exam, Peter M. Edelstein Dec 2004

Classroom Warfare—Aicpa And Aacsb Vs. Legal Studies: Result: The New Cpa Exam, Peter M. Edelstein

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) either intentionally or because of shortsightedness or ignorance have diminished the importance of the study of law. By choosing to ignore the news headlines and the illegal and unethical behavior of some executives, these organizations fail to realize the connection between a knowledge of the law and the quality of business leaders. The marginalization of legal studies ill-serves our students. The new computerized CPA Exam is the latest manifestation of this trend.

Reporting On Company Financial Information Before Gaap: In The Wall Street Journal For The Year 1900, Mary Ellen Oliverio, Bernard H, Newman

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

Many questions are raised about the generally accepted accounting principles that guide the preparation and reporting of financial information by contemporary companies, especially those publicly-owned companies that must disclose financial information on a regular basis. Such questions raise another question which motivated this historical study: "What was the nature and extent of financial information reporting in The Wall Street Journal before there was an organized, specified body of accounting principles—before GAAP?" A series on accounting topics titled Studies of Value, which began publication on January 4, 1900, was the source of this study. This is an initial exploratory historical study …

Purpose - To compare the test-retest reliability, convergent validity, and overall feasibility/usability of activity-based (AB) and time-based (TB) approaches for obtaining self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) from adolescents.

Methods - Adolescents (206 females and 114 males) completed two 3-d physical activity recalls using the AB and TB surveys, which contained identical lists of physical activities. The participants wore an MTI Actigraph® accelerometer for the same period.

Results - The TB instrument took about 3 min longer to complete (P=0.022). Overall 2-d test-retest correlations for MVPA were similar for the two surveys (r=0.676 and 0.667), but the girls …

Lake Mcconaughy And Nebraska Piping Plover Recovery Goals, Mark M. Peyton Dec 2004

Lake Mcconaughy And Nebraska Piping Plover Recovery Goals, Mark M. Peyton

Nebraska Bird Review

Since 1992 the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District (Central) has protected and monitored nesting Piping Plovers along the shore of Lake McConaughy (Keith County, Nebraska). Over those 13 seasons, Central monitored 849 Piping Plover nests and documented the successful fledging (successful fledging is defined as a chick at least 24 days old, or one observed flying) of 1,237 Piping Plover chicks (Table 1), making Lake McConaughy one of the most productive nesting areas for Piping Plovers in Nebraska. The following is a documentation of the contributions of Lake McConaughy to the recovery goals for Piping Plovers in Nebraska. …

Court Review: Volume 40, Issue 3-4 - Smarter Sentencing: On The Need To Consider Crime Reduction As A Goal, Michael Marcus

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

In February, 2004, Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski directed a newly created “Public Safety Review Steering Committee” to “look at our public safety system from beginning to end” and to develop “strategies to make the system stronger” wherever it does not sufficiently protect Oregonians. In common with many states, Oregon long ago adopted a modification of the penal code to declare crime reduction among the purposes of sentencing. And in common with many states, Oregon has adopted a sentencing guidelines model that roughly directs sentencing to reflect crime seriousness, criminal history, and prison resources—largely or entirely ignoring crime reduction. Apparently in …

The Characterization Of Nanosized Nickel-Zinc Ferrites Synthesized Within Reverse Micelles Of Ctab/1-Hexanol/Water Microemulsion, Vuk Uskoković, Miha Drofenik, Irena Ban Dec 2004

The Characterization Of Nanosized Nickel-Zinc Ferrites Synthesized Within Reverse Micelles Of Ctab/1-Hexanol/Water Microemulsion, Vuk Uskoković, Miha Drofenik, Irena Ban

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Stoichiometric nanocrystalline nickel–zinc ferrites were synthesized by a reverse micelle method following a multi-microemulsion approach. Different pH values were chosen for the alkali precipitating reaction during the synthesis of different powders. Synthesized, as-dried and subsequently calcined powders were characterized in terms of their magnetic properties. XRD analyses and specific-surface area measurements were used to determine the average particle sizes of the synthesized samples. DCS and TGA measurements were performed to reveal the phase transitions within the samples at elevated temperatures, whereas TEM was used to view and record the microstructure of the nanosized ferrite samples. A possible mechanism of the …

Court Review: Volume 40, Issue 3-4 - Court Gazing: Features Of Diversity In The U.S. Supreme Court Building, Hongxia Liu

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

“Diversity is its strength, just as it is the strength of America itself,” wrote Justice Sandra Day O’Connor about the United States Supreme Court.1 The Court’s strength of diversity is manifested in various ways. To its thousands of visitors, the Supreme Court Building itself is perhaps the first and foremost exhibition of that strength of diversity.

In the nation’s highest court, high above the bench, are the figures of 18 historical lawgivers depicted in marble friezes. These 18 lawgivers are of different races and ethnicities, from Hammurabi to Moses to Confucius to John Marshall. They stand parallel, representing diverse legal …
