Can B2g Portals Be Used Effectively To Stimulate Business In Smes?: A Case Analysis Of The 2cities Business To Government Portal, Ian Martinus Jan 2004

Can B2g Portals Be Used Effectively To Stimulate Business In Smes?: A Case Analysis Of The 2cities Business To Government Portal, Ian Martinus

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have many options when purchasing goods or services. These include personal contacts and networks, familiar centralised supply sources and other ad hoc means. One purchasing possibility is to buy from and sell to other businesses within a similar geographic area. The benefits of buying and selling locally may not occur to SMEs. They seek, like other consumers, to get value for money, fast and efficient service, and a reasonable level of quality. Many factors can impinge upon an SME's decision to purchase locally. It can be assumed that, given a reasonable local option, SMEs wish …

Russia's 'Dictatorship Of Law' And The European Court Of Human Rights, Jeffrey D. Kahn Jan 2004

Russia's 'Dictatorship Of Law' And The European Court Of Human Rights, Jeffrey D. Kahn

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This article is an adaptation of a lecture given at St. Antony's College, Oxford on 5 July 2003 in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at Oxford University. The author evaluates the effect of the European Convention on Human Rights on Russian law and politics. Russia has been a signatory to the Convention for five years. The author argues that the full power of the Convention as a force for reform in Russia was unanticipated at the time of Russia's accession. Nevertheless, the Convention has been the catalyst for substantial reforms, especially …

The Pros And Cons Of The Learned Helplessness Construct And The Battered Woman Syndrome: A Critical Analysis And Possible Reformulation, Lucille Andreozzi Stern Jan 2004

The Pros And Cons Of The Learned Helplessness Construct And The Battered Woman Syndrome: A Critical Analysis And Possible Reformulation, Lucille Andreozzi Stern

Open Access Dissertations

Two prevailing, contrasting theories, learned helplessness and health psychogenesis, have been proposed to describe and explain the battered woman's experience and response to domestic violence. This research examined the status (scientific adequacy) of each theory's database to determine where the preponderance of evidence lies.

The investigator articulated nine factors that differentiate the two theories. Trained independent raters then rated study outcomes as falling into one of three categories: pro-learned helplessness, pro-health psychogenesis, or supportive of both theories. Studies of two research samples (shelter and community) were identified and assessed (rated) along four methodological dimensions (sample, instrumentation, statistical analysis, and hypothesis …

Four Arguments Against A Marriage Amendment That Even An Opponent Of Gay Marriage Should Accept, Dale Carpenter Jan 2004

Four Arguments Against A Marriage Amendment That Even An Opponent Of Gay Marriage Should Accept, Dale Carpenter

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In this article, the author argues against a federal constitutional amendment preventing states from recognizing same-sex marriages. As of now, a nationwide policy debate is underway on the merits of providing full marital recognition to gay couples. That debate is still in its infancy and is proceeding in a variety of ways, with divergent policy choices in the states. It should not be cut short by the extraordinary mechanism of a constitutional amendment that would substantially delay or permanently foreclose what may turn out to be a valuable social reform.

To summarize, the four main points the author makes are: …

Resilience In Ex-Refugees From Cambodia And Vietnam, Lynne Ee Lin Yong Jan 2004

Resilience In Ex-Refugees From Cambodia And Vietnam, Lynne Ee Lin Yong

Open Access Dissertations

The negative impacts of various forms of trauma on the physical and mental health of victims are well documented, including the experiences of the French Indo-Chinese, who suffered a range of traumatic experiences ranging from displacement to torture. However, a sizable percentage of French Indo-Chinese refugees living in the U.S. do not exhibit psychopathology. Very little is known about the Indo-Chinese refugees who are not seeking services and are doing well in their host country. This study focused on resilient Cambodian and Vietnamese ex-refugees, with the goal of identifying resiliency factors and their underlying processes, in order to inform the …

Testing A Model Of Unwanted Pursuit And Stalking, Leila B. Dutton-Greene Jan 2004

Testing A Model Of Unwanted Pursuit And Stalking, Leila B. Dutton-Greene

Open Access Dissertations

Unwanted pursuit and stalking are common, especially among young adults attending college. Cupach and Spitzberg (2004) developed their relational goal pursuit theory to explain unwanted pursuit and stalking. They theorize that unwanted pursuit and stalking develop out of a disjunctive relationship in which one person wants a type of relationship that the other does not. They propose that the interrelated and co-occurring processes of rumination, emotional flooding, and rationalization serve to disinhibit a pursuer' s idea of what is appropriate behavior. Thus, the object perceives the pursuer's behavior as excessive, inappropriate, and perhaps threatening.

I tested a model of unwanted …

Essays On Fisheries Management, Ramesh Baskaran Jan 2004

Essays On Fisheries Management, Ramesh Baskaran

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three manuscripts that explore the present issues on both commercial and recreational fishery management in the United States of America. It reviews recent development and different management strategies in fisheries, which shows the need to expand and improve the present fishery management in order to entail sustainability of resources as well as the economic well-being of the fishery participants. The first manuscript is policy oriented and suggests a rights-based cooperative approach may provide an incentive for the rational management of Atlantic sea scallop fishery. Due to excessive harvest capability and regulatory inefficiencies, the sea scallop industry …

Ecological Determinants Of Lyme Disease In An Endemic Community, Neeta N. Pardanani Jan 2004

Ecological Determinants Of Lyme Disease In An Endemic Community, Neeta N. Pardanani

Open Access Dissertations

We investigated potential risk factors for Lyme disease at the level of a southern Rhode Island community where vector ticks ( Ixodes scapularis Say) and human Lyme disease are endemic. We recruited homeowners with and without household histories of Lyme disease that would permit sampling of ticks and small mammals around the wooded edge of their properties. Entomologic factors including nymphal tick abundance, rates of tick infection with Lyme disease-causing bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi ), and the density of infected nymphs were measured. We evaluated the relationship between these variables and the history of Lyme disease cases within households. The relationship …

Older Lesbian Perspectives On Advance Care Planning For The End Of Life, Jean W. Powell Jan 2004

Older Lesbian Perspectives On Advance Care Planning For The End Of Life, Jean W. Powell

Open Access Dissertations

This study used grounded theory methodology and in-depth interviews with 12 older lesbians to investigate three research questions: (1) How do participants define and engage in the process of end-of-life planning? (2) Are there special issues associated with end-of-life planning that participants believe are different from those faced by heterosexual women? and (3) How do participants describe a good death and what steps might make a good death more likely? The participants consisted of an ethnically diverse sample of 12 self-identified lesbian women between 60 and 80 years of age. Each participant responded to semi-structured interview questions. Each interview was …

Transboundary Impacts Of Fishing Activities Along The Northeast Continental Shelf, Mark Lucas Soboil Jan 2004

Transboundary Impacts Of Fishing Activities Along The Northeast Continental Shelf, Mark Lucas Soboil

Open Access Dissertations

In Manuscript I, I construct a stylized conceptual model to evaluate the international trade of the Atlantic groundfish fishery between the US and Canada. The model incorporates both the biological and economic components of the fishery, and explores the environmental, economic and some welfare implications through trade. First I explore the consequence of each country imposing a different fishery management regime. Second, I incorporate the spatial dynamics of the stock into this framework. Third, I use the conceptual model to discover the effects this may have on international trade. And finally I include the spatial dynamics of the stock into …

Examining The Role Of Social Context In Nurses' Pain Assessment Practice With Postoperative Clients, Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo Jan 2004

Examining The Role Of Social Context In Nurses' Pain Assessment Practice With Postoperative Clients, Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo

Open Access Dissertations

Pain is a significant symptom in the postoperative period. Inadequately managed pain has been associated with additional postoperative complications and prolonged hospitalization, yet empirical data demonstrate that nurses frequently use inaccurate assessment criteria, and clients report inadequate pain management. Interventions designed to change nurses' assessment of pain have not addressed the impact of the setting in which practice occurs. This study was designed to describe the impact of the sociocultural context of the practice setting on nurses' assessment of postoperative patients' pain. The study was guided by Bourdieu's theory of practice which proposes that each instance of human practice is …

A Multi-Level Approach To Individual Readiness To Adopt Entreprise Resource Planning Software, David Edouard Desplaces Jan 2004

A Multi-Level Approach To Individual Readiness To Adopt Entreprise Resource Planning Software, David Edouard Desplaces

Open Access Dissertations

This study seeks to expand our understanding of individual readiness to change and its antecedents. Individual readiness to change is explored and measured as a three dimensional attitudinal construct. Antecedents to change are explored including both the objective and subjective context of change. Participants were faculty members at a university in the northeast part of the U.S. who were scheduled to use E-Campus, an internet-based portal application designed to assist them in managing their courses including grade submission, class rosters and access to student specific information. Data were collected using a mailed questionnaire. The results indicated no relationship between objective …

Teacher Collaboration: Learning From Inclusion Dyad Dialogues, Carol Ann Frisk Jan 2004

Teacher Collaboration: Learning From Inclusion Dyad Dialogues, Carol Ann Frisk

Open Access Dissertations

Research on teacher collaboration since the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (PL 94-142) in 1975 has increased the efforts in the field of education to improve the practice of collaboration. This is especially important as it applies to the collaboration, or co-teaching, of a special education teacher and a general education teacher in an inclusion classroom. Many textbooks and teaching guides have presented techniques for improving collaborative practice. Researchers have shown a strong interest in broadening the knowledge base about this best practice of collaboration in the educational field, but a continued reliance on surveys and …

Parents' Descriptions Of Ideal Home Nursing Care For Their Technology Dependent Child, Themselves, And Their Families, Michele A. Mendes Jan 2004

Parents' Descriptions Of Ideal Home Nursing Care For Their Technology Dependent Child, Themselves, And Their Families, Michele A. Mendes

Open Access Dissertations

Home care for technology dependent children is one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. health care industry, but the nursing literature lacks clear directions to guide home care nurses in planning a family-centered practice. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in the literature by eliciting descriptions of ideal home nursing care for technology dependent children from the perspective of their parents, and to compile a comprehensive list of helpful and supportive nursing interventions. A qualitative, descriptive design was used to examine the following research questions: (1) How do parents of technology dependent children describe …

The Factors That Influence Middle-Level Teachers To Incorporate Community Service-Learning Into The Curriculum, Andrea J. Hainey-Turcotte Jan 2004

The Factors That Influence Middle-Level Teachers To Incorporate Community Service-Learning Into The Curriculum, Andrea J. Hainey-Turcotte

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined the factors that influence middle level educators to incorporate community service-learning into the curriculum. Eleven participants, each a teacher of middle level students, were interviewed to determine the extent to which they were influenced by intended outcomes for students, the community, and themselves. Findings suggest that participants were influenced to include community service-learning in the curriculum by anticipated benefits to students and community members. Participants hoped that by engaging in community service-learning activities, their students would become better scholars, leaders, citizens, and/or people. It would seem that participants were also driven to the implementation of community service-learning …

Sociocultural Contexts Of Asian American/Pacific Islander Women's Hiv Risk Enhancing/Reducing Responses, Jennifer C. Huang Jan 2004

Sociocultural Contexts Of Asian American/Pacific Islander Women's Hiv Risk Enhancing/Reducing Responses, Jennifer C. Huang

Open Access Dissertations

HIV prevention issues for Asian American and Pacific Islander (API) women are complex and multifaceted. Comprehending the risk enhancing/reducing responses of API women in heterosexual relationships requires an examination of various sociocultural influences, such as gender roles, cultural expectations, community, economic conditions, acculturation and public policies that shape API women's decision-making and HIV risk enhancing/reducing responses. In order to address these issues, a mixed method study (i.e., qualitative and quantitative) was conducted to elucidate these sociocultural factors. Additionally, this study sought to investigate the various ecological levels that are associated with API women's sexual risk enhancing and reducing behaviors. Participants …

Domestic Violence Screening By Nurses In The Primary Care Setting, Karen Hetzel Jan 2004

Domestic Violence Screening By Nurses In The Primary Care Setting, Karen Hetzel

Open Access Dissertations

Domestic violence is one of the most important health care issues in the United States. One of every four women is a victim of domestic violence each year and thirty-one percent of women have a lifetime prevalence of domestic violence. Since most women receive their health care in primary care settings, nurses can play a critical role in decreasing the cycle of violence through screening and intervention. Although the research literature on domestic violence is voluminous, little is known about nursing practice related to routine screening of women for domestic violence or intervention in primary care settings. This study examined …

Determination Of Chlorophyll A Concentrations And Phytoplankton Primary Production In New England Estuarine Waters Using Ocean Color Remote Sensing From Low-Flying Aircraft, Darryl Joel Keith Jan 2004

Determination Of Chlorophyll A Concentrations And Phytoplankton Primary Production In New England Estuarine Waters Using Ocean Color Remote Sensing From Low-Flying Aircraft, Darryl Joel Keith

Open Access Dissertations

The response of coastal systems to the addition of nutrients (especially nitrogen) is generally to stimulate phytoplankton biomass, measured using the concentration of chlorophyll a as a surrogate. However, the concentration and distribution of chlorophyll in the aquatic environment is variable in space and time. Historically, random to systematic design strategies have collected samples from specific locations in space (i.e. a point measurement). These strategies also are limited in sampling intra-annual, seasonal, and episodic events. Therefore, in order to sample on all time scales of interest over large geographic areas, a large number of point measurements and resources are required. …

The Role Of Glycolytic Substrates In The Initiation And Maintenance Phases Of Colonization Of The Mouse Large Intestine By Escherichia Coli Mg1655 And Escherichia Coli Edl933, Regina L. Miranda

Open Access Dissertations

Escherichia coli is a gram-negative motile rod, and is one of the most common bacterial strains isolated from the human intestinal tract (1,2). E. coli K-12, strain MG1655, is a non-pathogenic laboratory strain of E. coli whose genome has been fully sequenced (1). E. coli O157:H7, strain EDL933, a shigatoxin-producing E. coli (STEC), is a human pathogen, whose genome has also been fully sequenced (34). E. coli EDL933 was first isolated in August of 1982 from patients in the United States suffering from an outbreak of bloody diarrhea, which was traced to contaminated hamburgers (8,9,10,11). E. coli O157:H7 infections are …

Queering Legal Education: A Project Of Theoretical Discovery, Kim Brooks, Debra Parkes Jan 2004

Queering Legal Education: A Project Of Theoretical Discovery, Kim Brooks, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

The article has two parts. Part II discusses the materials we reviewed to inform the development of a queer legal pedagogy. In particular, it examines the categories of queer legal scholarship and highlights the contributions of other outsider scholars to legal education debates. Early in our research, we found limited material on queer legal pedagogy, and we discovered nothing that posited a theoretical approach. We did, however, find rich resources written by other outsiders to law from which some design principles for queer legal pedagogy might be drawn. We should note at the outset that our goal in this Part …

Targeting Workplace Harassment In Quebec: On Exporting A New Legislative Agenda, Debra Parkes Jan 2004

Targeting Workplace Harassment In Quebec: On Exporting A New Legislative Agenda, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

For over twenty-five years, Canadian law has prohibited sexual harassment and other forms of discriminatory harassment (meaning harassment that relates to the target's race, disability, sexual orientation, or other similar characteristic). Recent amendments to the Quebec Labour Standards Act aim to fill a gap in the law that currently provides a remedy (under human rights legislation) for discriminatory harassment, but not for harassment that is not obviously linked to the target's membership in a protected class such as that based on race, sex, religion, disability or sexual orientation. This paper takes a preliminary look at this new legislative initiative. It …

Strengthening Domestic Corporate Activity In Global Capital Markets: A Canadian Perspective On South Africa's Corporate Governance, Janis P. Sarra Jan 2004

Strengthening Domestic Corporate Activity In Global Capital Markets: A Canadian Perspective On South Africa's Corporate Governance, Janis P. Sarra

All Faculty Publications

As a Canadian corporate law scholar who recently had the opportunity to visit South Africa, I was humbled by both the profound challenges and the immutable positive spirit of the South African people when it comes to thinking about their economic and social future. Hence while this paper is a reflective discussion on the kinds of challenges that exist and the strategies that could be deployed to enhance corporate governance in South Africa, it must be emphasized at the outset that it is for Sub-Saharan African nations to develop their own governance models. They are best positioned to adopt strategies …

The Legally Queer Child, Bruce Macdougall Jan 2004

The Legally Queer Child, Bruce Macdougall

All Faculty Publications

This article explores the various presumptions and arguments of Canadian courts in largely denying queer children a legal presence. An analysis of the intersection of homosexuality and children is explored with a view to arguing that legally, queer children deserve a voice. The author begins by outlining the development of the legal conceptualization of the "child". This conceptualization led to the notion of the child as innocent, and thus in need of protection. In comparison, homosexuals came to be characterized as "aberrant" and "predatory". Protecting children from homosexuals then became a simple step of logic, which ultimately led to the …
