Male Sexuality And Masculinity: Implications For Stis/Hiv And Sexual Health Interventions In Bangladesh, Sharful I. Khan
Male Sexuality And Masculinity: Implications For Stis/Hiv And Sexual Health Interventions In Bangladesh, Sharful I. Khan
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
My thesis concerns male sexuality as revealed by men living in contemporary urban and rural Bangladesh. I pursue what men think it means to be a man. dimensions of manliness and manhood, and male influences in the construction of male/female relationships. Significant meanings men attribute to sexual acts, pleasure, pain,. risk and safety in multiple social realities, particularly in the era of HIV/AIDS, were explored. A social constructionist perspective guided my research. Using qualitative research methods, I conducted 50 in-depth interviews with men aged between 18 and 58 years from diverse socio-occupational backgrounds. Twenty key informants included religious leaders. traditional …

Consequences Of A Short Pulse Of Pesticide Exposure For Survival And Reproduction Of Gammarus Pulex, Anders Cold, Valery E. Forbes
Consequences Of A Short Pulse Of Pesticide Exposure For Survival And Reproduction Of Gammarus Pulex, Anders Cold, Valery E. Forbes
Valery Forbes Publications
The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of a short and environmentally realistic pulse exposure of different life stages of the freshwater amphipod, Gammarus pulex, to the pyrethroid insecticide, esfenvalerate. We were particularly interested in determining the extent to which detectable effects on key life-history traits persisted following cessation of a brief exposure to this pesticide. Our results indicate that environmentally realistic exposure concentrations of this widely used insecticide can have a significant effect on the survival and reproduction of Gammarus pulex. Comparison of LC50 values indicates that G. pulex has a similar sensitivity …
An Analysis Of Computer-Mediated Communication Technologies As Tools To Enhance Learning., Ana I. Casanova
An Analysis Of Computer-Mediated Communication Technologies As Tools To Enhance Learning., Ana I. Casanova
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The integration of computer-mediated communication (CMC) technologies into the higher educational settings have required faculty to change their roles from the direct instructional model to a model based on constructivists' ideas. CMC instructional tools (ITs) have provided a change by shifting a traditional teacher-centered setting into a teacher facilitator environment. Teacher's professional development has become an important task to effectively integrate technology into their courses. Questions concerning the implementation and value of CMC technologies and their impact in higher education are not yet clear. The purpose of this research study was to determine the extent to which CMC technologies promoted …

Assessing Family Functioning, Coping Strategies, And Behavioral Functioning: Children With Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders And Kidney Disease., Carrie Piazza-Waggoner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to examine children's behavioral functioning to two chronic health conditions having received little empirical study in the pediatric psychology literature: primary immunodeficiency disorders (PIDDs) and kidney disease (KD). Children with PIDD are at increased risk for infections, respiratory-related concerns, gastrointestinal difficulties, inflammatory bowel disease, and malignancy. Children with PIDD and KD seem to share many similar experiences (e.g., dialysis or IVIg treatments, frequent invasive medical procedures). As such, these children were compared to each other and to a healthy comparison group. The aims of this study were to: (a) compare the perceptions of children …
The Sundown Syndrome: Relation Between Etiological Variables And Temporal Patterns Of Agitation., Lesley P. Koven
The Sundown Syndrome: Relation Between Etiological Variables And Temporal Patterns Of Agitation., Lesley P. Koven
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sundowning refers to the exacerbation of symptoms of arousal or impairment in the late afternoon, evening, or night among older adults with dementia. Because sundowning is associated with immense burden on family caregivers and institutional nursing staff, determining its etiology remains an important goal so that appropriate interventions may be developed. The current study examined the association between sundowning and variables representing he primary etiological theories of sundowning in a sample of 20 nursing home patients with Alzheimer's disease. Specifically, theories relating sundowning to circadian rhythm disturbances, sleep disruption, and overstimulation were tested. Sundowners were found to have a later …

Religiosity And Spirituality In Spousal Caregivers Of Older Adults With Dementia: Testing Anxiety Moderator And Mediator Models., Andrea K. Shreve-Neiger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Intensive and extensive caregiving of older adults disabled by dementia is frequently provided by the older adult's spouse. Caregiving for a spouse with dementia has been related to a number of poor physical and mental health outcomes for the primary caregiver. Anxiety is one outcome that is endorsed frequently by the caregiver, yet remains minimally studied in relation to caregiving. In addition, no study has identified factors that potentially moderate the relation between caregiving stressors and anxiety in older adults. This study explored the relations among caregiving stressors, burden, religiosity, spirituality, and anxiety in older adult caregivers. Several models were …
Necessity Of Leadership Development In Allied Health Education Programs, Matthew R. Kutz
Necessity Of Leadership Development In Allied Health Education Programs, Matthew R. Kutz
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Why should educational programs teach leadership, and why should universities and colleges who offer allied health care programs be concerned with training future clinicians to be leaders? Leadership development is a topic wrought with passion among business professionals and educators alike. Leadership is something everybody needs and it remains vague and ambiguous. Leadership is a mystical, almost ethereal, quality that you cannot define, yet know when you see. Advancing the allied health care professions and the members of the allied health care community is proving to be difficult without the necessary leadership skills.

Concentration Characteristics And Batting Performance In Collegiate Baseball And Softball, Daniel Samess
Concentration Characteristics And Batting Performance In Collegiate Baseball And Softball, Daniel Samess
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
This study examined relationships between batting performance, trait anxiety, and concentration style. A predictive analysis was also formed to determine the combination of subscales that may best explain variance in batting performance. To accurately measure these variables, the Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT; Martens, Vealey, & Burton, 1990) and the Batting-specific Test of Attentional and Interpersonal Style (B-TAIS; Albrecht & Feltz, 1987) were employed. Participants consisted of both male collegiate baseball and female collegiate sofitball players located in the southeastern section of the United States. Participants' 2003 batting statistics were utilized to assess batting performance, and participants must have compiled …
The Need For An Interdisciplinary Field Of Hate Studies, Kenneth S. Stern
The Need For An Interdisciplinary Field Of Hate Studies, Kenneth S. Stern
Journal of Hate Studies
Hate is a normative part of the human experience. Look at history. Regardless of when, where, under what economic or political system, what major religion is followed, or any other variable, people have always had the capacity to define someone else as an “other,” and hate him, often with deadly results.
The Social Psychology Of Hatred, Evan R. Harrington
The Social Psychology Of Hatred, Evan R. Harrington
Journal of Hate Studies
Hatred has not typically been a topic of research in the field of social psychology, although several components which embody hatred have been studied extensively in this field. Social psychologists have traditionally considered prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination and intergroup aggression to be highly important and socially relevant topics for research, and thousands of studies by social psychologists have examined these and other issues related to hatred. There are three primary approaches social psychologists have utilized in studying prejudice and intergroup aggression. The first approach may be thought of as a general model of social influence in which a variety of situational …
Hate, Oppression, Repression, And The Apocalyptic Style: Facing Complex Questions And Challenges, Chip Berlet
Hate, Oppression, Repression, And The Apocalyptic Style: Facing Complex Questions And Challenges, Chip Berlet
Journal of Hate Studies
As we build the field of Hate Studies we need to scrupulously inspect our own work. Blee and Ferber have already suggested a number of complex questions for scholars to answer. This paper argues that understanding the interrelated dynamics of hate, apocalyptic dualism, institutionalized oppression, and political repression is crucial to increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of our research and answering these questions.

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
Background.Severe complications may arise as a result of virus dissemination after smallpox (live vaccinia virus) vaccination, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. We developed a new mouse model for studying the effects of antiviral agents on progressive vaccinia virus infections.
Methods.Hairless mice were treated with cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg/day) every 4 days starting 1 day before vaccinia virus exposure to wounded skin. Primary lesions progressed in severity, satellite lesions developed, and the infection eventually killed the mice.
Results.Topical treatment with 1%‐cidofovir cream (twice daily for 7 days) was much more effective in reducing the severity of primary lesions and the number of satellite …
Iraq: One Year Later, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Iraq: One Year Later, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Journal Articles
Almost exactly one year ago, during her presidential speech at the 2003 Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law, Anne-Marie Slaughter spoke of the use of force that began in Iraq shortly before that Annual Meeting. She concluded that the war was unlawful but nevertheless potentially legitimate. That conclusion provoked a great debate from the moment her speech ended. Our purpose today is to take up that debate.
Keeping The Money Under The Soap : Constructions Of The English And English Migrants In Australian Nationalist Texts, Ann Rule
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Where does an Englishman hide his money?' 'I don't know. Where does an Englishman hide his money?' 'Under the soap'. This thesis interrogates representations of ‘Englishness’and by extension, English migrants, in a variety of Australian cultural texts, including film, television, newspapers and academic publications. Underlying this investigation are two major research questions: What are the factors informing the ambivalent place accorded 'Englishness' in Australian cultural texts? and What can this form of investigation tell us about Australian culture and associated national myths? I have attempted to reinterpret these national myths through the texts/ narratives of Englishness and class. One of …
Cognitive Processes Involved In The Onset And Course Of Postnatal Distress From The Antenatal Period To Six Months Postpartum: New Findings, And Implications For Future Research, Anne Pratt
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Although studies have explored the epidemiology of Postnatal Depression (PND) and other mood disorders occurring in the postnatal period, there is some evidence to support the argument that there may be different subsets of women suffering from low mood, around the time of childbirth (Warner, Appleby, Whitton, & Faragher, 1997). Some new mothers may be responding to the inherent, but often understated, stressors of the childbirth experience itself and the period that follows it, linked to dysfunctional maternal attitudes. Others may have pre-existing dysfunctional cognitions before the birth arising from other factors, and therefore already be vulnerable to a mood …

The aim of this thesis was to examine proprioceptive and activation changes that occur in triceps surae in response to exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD). While proprioceptive changes have previously been demonstrated in association with EIMD, the present investigation examined the role of a number of potential contributing factors to these changes, following both single and repeated bouts of eccentric exercise.
Contrast Enhancement Of Ultrasound Images Using Shunting Inhibitory Cellular Neural Networks, Murali M. Gogineni
Contrast Enhancement Of Ultrasound Images Using Shunting Inhibitory Cellular Neural Networks, Murali M. Gogineni
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Evolving from neuro-biological insights, neural network technology gives a computer system an amazing capacity to actually generate decisions dynamically. However, as the amount of data to be processed increases, there is a demand for developing new types of networks such as Cellular Neural Networks (CNN), to ease the computational burden without compromising the outcomes. The objective of this thesis is to research the capability of Shunting Inhibitory Cellular Neural Networks (SICNN) to solve the clarity problems in ultrasound imaging. In this thesis, we begin by reviewing a number of traditional enhancement techniques and measures. Since the entire work of this …
Identifying And Enabling Core Management Competencies And Compliance Factors In High Reliability Organisations : A Study In Organisational Risk Management Psychology And Training: A Small N Modified Grounded Theory Qualitative Analysis, Patrick S. Maher
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
High reliability entities governed by statutory regulations are required to comply with safety guidelines and specifications. When fatalities or serious injuries occur in otherwise preventable accidents these entities are routinely exonerated from any responsibility by claiming to have ‘systemic management problems’ and their managing coalitions have been able to hide behind the ‘corporate veil’. This thesis maintains that the core managerial competencies needed to prevent preventable accidents, can be acquired through training, particularly if their mastery is mandated by a strong regulatory and compliance regime. The cases chosen for analysis revealed ten core managerial and organisational competencies and compliance as …
Mental Disorder Labelling As An Extralegal Variable In Mock Jury Deliberations, Kristin B. Wallengren
Mental Disorder Labelling As An Extralegal Variable In Mock Jury Deliberations, Kristin B. Wallengren
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Previous research has shown that a number of characteristics of trial participants (extralegal variables) can and do influence juror’s judgements. This is of importance as only the legally relevant facts of the case should be considered during a trial. The present study investigates the influence of victim characteristics on the juror decision making process during deliberation and the judgements made about the victim, crime and defendant in a mock jury setting, as well as investigating mock juror gender differences. A representative sample of people eligible for jury duty in Western Australia viewed a video vignette depicting a trial, in which …
