A "Felon" In The White House: A Study Of The 2024 Election And The Racialized Violence Of The Word "Felon" In American Politics, Val Arnold

FCRH Honors Program Theses

One of the campaign strategies pursued by the Democratic Party in the 2024 presidential election was the use of a felon-centered discourse when discussing Donald Trump. Through the use of such discursive strategies, the Democratic Party attempted to evoke the sense of fear typically associated with discussions of crime, hoping to make voters associate the “fear” with Trump, a white man. In the media, the language used in speeches and advertising campaigns serves as a powerful tool. The current literature discusses how language operates as a “representational system,” and ultimately, words serve to give meaning. Although many articles separately discuss …

The Impact Of Ai Companions On Family Law, Clare Huntington May 2026

The Impact Of Ai Companions On Family Law, Clare Huntington

Cardozo Law Review

People of all ages and backgrounds regularly use AI companions—virtual friends, lovers, and confidantes powered by artificial intelligence. As a new form of relationship, this development poses novel doctrinal and policy questions for family law. As a doctrinal matter, what does child neglect look like when a parent delegates caretaking to an AI companion? How should standards for elder neglect adapt to the widespread use of robotic caregivers? Should lawmakers impose mandatory reporting requirements on therapy bots if children share experiences of abuse or neglect? And can people designate an AI companion as a health care proxy? As a policy …

Nonmarriage? Rethinking Religious Marriage In Modern States, Shahar Lifshitz May 2026

Nonmarriage? Rethinking Religious Marriage In Modern States, Shahar Lifshitz

Cardozo Law Review

This Article examines the civil regulation of religious marriage in liberal democracies. While legal scholarship has extensively explored nonmarital intimate relationships, it has paid comparatively little attention to couples who regard themselves as married under religious law without corresponding civil status, as well as couples who remain religiously married following a civil divorce. These arrangements, prevalent among religious minorities such as Orthodox Jews and Muslims, often generate significant legal and personal harms, including exclusion from civil protections, economic vulnerability, and constrained exit from intimate relationships.

This Article develops a structured analytical framework grounded in three liberal perspectives. The individual-rights perspective …

Sustainable Technology Evolution In Innovation Ecosystems: A Regulatory Framework For (Non)-Convergent Technologies, Christopher Agyapong Siaw, Joseph Amankwah-Amoah May 2026

Sustainable Technology Evolution In Innovation Ecosystems: A Regulatory Framework For (Non)-Convergent Technologies, Christopher Agyapong Siaw, Joseph Amankwah-Amoah

Plymouth Business School

Technological convergence is a critical driver of technological evolution and industrial transformation, yet, convergence also generates complex ethical, sustainability, and regulatory challenges that remain poorly understood and insufficiently theorized. This study advances a conceptual framework that explains the regulatory mechanisms shaping convergence and non-convergence dynamics across three ecosystem layers: components, products and applications, and support and infrastructure. By distinguishing these layers, the framework reveals how interdependent evolution can raise ethical, sustainability, and regulatory concerns at different levels. The study advances theory by (1) reconceptualizing convergence as a multi-layered phenomenon, (2) expanding analysis beyond appropriability indicators such as patents to includedevelopment-based …

With the increasing number of research priority setting (RPS) exercises, systematic reviews synthesising their findings have also grown in prevalence. While these reviews offer a structured way to compare methodologies, identify underrepresented stakeholder groups, and guide funding decisions, conventional systematic review methodologies, designed primarily for clinical and health research, often fail to capture the complexity, contextual nuance, and participatory nature of RPS. In this commentary, we critically examine these limitations and propose methodological adaptations to enhance the relevance and utility of systematic reviews of RPS. Beyond knowledge generation, we highlight the broader implications of RPS, including its role in stakeholder …

Noncanonical Clock Regulators Control Stress Responses In Digestive Diseases, Dishu Zhou, Roberto E López-Valiente, Samer G Mattar, Dongyin Guan

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The digestive system is essential for nutrient absorption, processing, and waste elimination. The expression of many genes and physiological processes within this system exhibits a 24-h rhythmicity. However, modern lifestyle factors, such as jet lag, shift work, and irregular eating patterns, significantly disrupt these rhythms, triggering various stress responses and contributing to numerous digestive disorders. Here, we focus on emerging studies on noncanonical clock regulators involved in stress responses, integrate these novel findings into the established model of the core circadian clock, and highlight recent advances in the development of novel therapeutics targeting these 24-h regulators. In addition, we discuss …

Introduction: Rare, deleterious germline variants are key contributors to inherited lung cancer (LC) risk. The Genetic Epidemiology of LC Consortium (GELCC) has curated valuable high-risk LC families and is uniquely positioned to uncover rare, high-penetrance variants underlying familial LC (FLC).

Methods: We performed whole-genome and exome sequencing on germline DNA from 120 high-risk LC families (177 FLC cases, 309 unaffected relatives). We prioritized rare (allele frequency < 1% in the genome aggregation database), potentially deleterious variants present in two or more FLC cases. These variants were then validated in 10,085 sporadic LC (SLC) cases and 612,970 controls.

Results: We identified 118 candidate variants, 28 of which were validated in SLC with strong statistical support. We discovered a novel pathogenic axis of three truncating variants in GALNT6, MUC4, and ERBB3 genes, which …

Dolutegravir Developmental Toxicity Is Mitigated By Magnesium And Folate In Zebrafish Embryos, Robert M Cabrera, Ahmed Mohamed, Ryoko Minowa, Katheryn A Neugebauer, Daniel A Gorelick

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Integrase strand transfer inhibitors have transformed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) therapy, yet the widely prescribed drug dolutegravir (DTG) has been linked to developmental toxicity, and its teratogenic mechanism remains unclear. Here, we used zebrafish to dissect DTG toxicity during early vertebrate development. DTG exposure from 2-4 h post-fertilization (hpf) to 24 hpf produced high mortality and abnormal morphology. Co-treatment with folates partially restored normal morphology, whereas calcium had no effect. Strikingly, supplementation with magnesium (Mg) partially rescued DTG-exposed embryos, implicating Mg availability in protection. In competitive binding assays, Mg increased binding of folate to purified folate receptor (FOLR1) by 30% …

Adhesion G protein-coupled receptors (aGPCRs) constitute a structurally and functionally distinct group within the superfamily of GPCRs. In 2015, the International Union of Pharmacology invited the Adhesion GPCR Consortium to publish a comprehensive review about aGPCRs and establish a unified nomenclature. Since then, substantial progress has been made in delineating the biological roles, molecular architecture, biochemical properties, expression profiles, ligand repertoire, and activation and signaling strategies of aGPCRs. Commensurate with these advances, their relevance to human pathophysiology has become increasingly apparent. In a coordinated effort, the Adhesion GPCR Consortium has reviewed recent progress in this field and provides a comprehensive …

Background: Relapsed medulloblastoma remains a significant therapeutic challenge as it is near universally fatal. The tumor microenvironment of medulloblastoma plays a critical role in tumor progression, influencing tumor growth, immune evasion, and therapeutic resistance. We hypothesized that defining tumor-immune interactions in diagnostic and relapsed medulloblastoma may uncover mechanisms of immune evasion and identify novel therapeutic targets.

Methods: We analyzed paired primary and recurrent RNA-sequencing data from 140 medulloblastoma patients to profile immune cell composition and validate spatial relationships within the TME. To identify key tumor-immune interactions, we developed a novel algorithm to detect receptor-ligand pairs using single-cell RNA-sequencing data. These …
