Multiple Mechanisms Regulate Numa Dynamics At Spindle Poles, Olga Kisurina-Evgenieva, Gary Mack, Quansheng Du, Ian Macara, Alexey Khodjakov, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

The large coiled-coil protein NuMA plays an essential role in organizing microtubule minus ends at spindle poles in vertebrate cells. Here, we use both in vivo and in vitro methods to examine NuMA dynamics at mitotic spindle poles. Using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, we show that an exogenously expressed green-fluorescent-protein/NuMA fusion undergoes continuous exchange between soluble and spindle-associated pools in living cells. These dynamics require cellular energy and display an average half-time for fluorescence recovery of approximately 3 minutes. To explore how NuMA dynamics at spindle poles is regulated, we exploited the association of NuMA with microtubule asters formed in …

Seventeen Famous Economists Weigh In On Copyright: The Role Of Theory, Empirics, And Network Effects, Stan Liebowitz, Stephen Margolis Sep 2004

Seventeen Famous Economists Weigh In On Copyright: The Role Of Theory, Empirics, And Network Effects, Stan Liebowitz, Stephen Margolis

ExpressO

The case of Eldred v. Ashcroft, which sought to have the Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA, aka Sonny Bono Copyright Act) declared unconstitutional, was recently decided by the Supreme Court. A remarkable group of seventeen economists including five Noble laureates, representing a wide spectrum of opinion in economics, submitted an amicus curie brief in support of Eldred. The economists condemned CTEA on the grounds that the revenues earned during the extension are so heavily discounted that they have almost no value, while the extended protection of aged works creates immediate monopoly deadweight losses and increases the costs of creating new …

Optical Filter Elements And Methods Of Making And Using Same, Michael A. Scobey, Lucien P. Ghislain, Dennis J. Derickson, Loren F. Stokes

Electrical Engineering

Optical filter elements and optical systems comprise optically mismatched etalons and optically mismatched stacked, optically coupled etalons that are directly optically coupled, at least one of the etalons or stacked, optically coupled etalons comprising first and second selectively transparent thin film mirror coatings on opposite surfaces of a bulk optic. The optically mismatched etalons can be configured to selectively pass single passbands. The disclosed optical systems optionally comprise other devices optically coupled to the optically mismatched etalons and optionally mismatched stacked, optically coupled etalons.

Production Of E+E− Pairs Accompanied By Nuclear Dissociation In Ultraperipheral Heavy-Ion Collisions, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Sep 2004

Production Of E+E− Pairs Accompanied By Nuclear Dissociation In Ultraperipheral Heavy-Ion Collisions, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

We present data on e+e− pair production accompanied by nuclear breakup in ultraperipheral gold-gold collisions at a center of mass energy of 200GeV per nucleon pair. The nuclear breakup requirement selects events at small impact parameters, where higher-order diagrams for pair production should be enhanced. We compare the data with two calculations: one based on the equivalent photon approximation, and the other using lowest-order quantum electrodynamics (QED). The data distributions agree with both calculations, except that the pair transverse momentum spectrum disagrees with the equivalent photon approach. We set limits on higher-order contributions to the cross section.

Methodology Comparison For Canopy Structure Parameters Extraction From Digital Hemispherical Photography In Boreal Forests, Sylvain G. Leblanc, Jing M. Chen, Richard Fernandes, Donald W. Deering, Alexis Conley Sep 2004

Methodology Comparison For Canopy Structure Parameters Extraction From Digital Hemispherical Photography In Boreal Forests, Sylvain G. Leblanc, Jing M. Chen, Richard Fernandes, Donald W. Deering, Alexis Conley

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The retrieval of canopy architectural parameters using off-the-shelf digital cameras with fish-eye lens is investigated. The technique used takes advantage of the sensor’s linear response to light of these cameras to improve the estimation of gap fraction using:

(1) the digital numbers of mixed sky-canopy pixels to estimate the within-pixel gap fraction; and (2) this process is done considering the variation in view zenith angle to take into account the sky radiance distribution and the canopy multiple scattering effects.

The foliage element clumping index is retrieved over a wide range of view zenith angles using:

(1) the accumulated gap size …

The Ethics Of The Adversary System, Greg S. Sergienko Sep 2004

The Ethics Of The Adversary System, Greg S. Sergienko

ExpressO

This article considers many commonly advanced criticisms of the adversary system. It provides an analytic framework that includes the likely results of changed ethical rules and that distinguishes and analyzes separately two different possible goals of the system, seeking the truth and promoting justice. The article is also unusual in the range of supporting materials that it synthesizes, which includes contributions from economic theory, psychological studies, philosophy, and traditional legal ethics.

The article concludes that changes in ethical codes meant to increase lawyers' duty to promote the truth will have a perverse result, decreasing the accuracy of litigation. This will …
