Foucault, Enlightenment And The Aesthetics Of The Self, Anita Seppä
Foucault, Enlightenment And The Aesthetics Of The Self, Anita Seppä
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Mona Hatoum's video installation Corps étranger is an example of an artwork that critically comments on particular aspects of contemporary visual culture, such as the colonization of the body's interior by medical image technologies. It has indeed been interpreted in those terms by several authors from within the new academic field of Visual Culture. Here it is argued that the critical cultural impact of the installation might be more fully described when one grants art a relative autonomy within the cultural field and, moreover, draws on concepts from more traditional academic disciplines and approaches, such as aesthetics and phenomenology. Art …
The Heresy Of Paraphrase Revisited, Stefán Snaevarr
The Heresy Of Paraphrase Revisited, Stefán Snaevarr
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
I try to rejuvenate Cleanth Brooks' old thesis about the 'heresy of paraphrase.' This I do by analysing a couple of well-known poems and by performing thought experiments of the "possible world" kind. They show that paradigmatic examples of poems are not paraphrasable. A prosaic text can be improved with the aid of a paraphrase, but a typical poem cannot. The deeper explanation for the non-rephrasability of poetry is that our understanding of it is basically tacit. In this way I hope to give Brooks' original thesis a more solid foundation.

Talk To The Animals: A Short Comment On Wolfgang Welsch's "Animal Aesthetics", Stefán Snaevarr
Talk To The Animals: A Short Comment On Wolfgang Welsch's "Animal Aesthetics", Stefán Snaevarr
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
I voice some concern about Wolfgang Welsch's defense of the theory that animals can feel aesthetic pleasure. My first concern is epistemological: it is hard to see how we can find out whether they actually feel such pleasures. My second concern is conceptual: aesthetic pleasures have intentional objects and are woven into fallible judgments. It is hard to see that animals have such objects and can perform such judgments.

A Transformation Based Algorithm For Ternary Reversible Logic Synthesis Using Universally Controlled Ternary Gates, Marek Perkowski, Eric Curtis
A Transformation Based Algorithm For Ternary Reversible Logic Synthesis Using Universally Controlled Ternary Gates, Marek Perkowski, Eric Curtis
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper a synthesis algorithm for reversible ternary logic cascades is presented. The algorithm can find a solution for any reversible ternary function with n inputs and n outputs utilizing ternary inverter gates and the new (quantum realizable) UCTG gates which are a powerful generalization of ternary Toffoli gates and Generalized Ternary Gates [4]. The algorithm is an extension of the algorithm presented by Dueck, Maslov, and Miller in [3]. A unique feature of this algorithm is that it utilizes no extra wires to generate the outputs. A basic compaction algorithm is defined to improve the results of the …

Tyranny, Natural Law, And Secession, Geoffrey Plauche
Tyranny, Natural Law, And Secession, Geoffrey Plauche
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis is an examination of the problem of tyranny from the perspective of radical libertarianism. History is to be seen as a race and conflict between liberty and power. After a brief introduction, the second section of this thesis is devoted to sketching out a natural law and natural rights theory. With this as the foundation, the third section analyzes the seminal work of Étienne de la Boétie’s The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude in which he elucidates the nature of tyranny and the psychology of subjection. All governments, even the worst tyranny, rest upon general popular acceptance. Religious and …
Sub-Pixel Event Repositioning Algorithms For Chandra X-Ray Astronomical Imaging, Jingqiang Li
Sub-Pixel Event Repositioning Algorithms For Chandra X-Ray Astronomical Imaging, Jingqiang Li
Theses
Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) offers unprecedented spatial resolution for X-ray astronomical imaging. As focal plane arrays, ACIS CCDs were fabricated to satisfy CXO's requirements in spatial and spectral specifications, and operate in photon-counting mode to record any photoelectric interactions into event lists with energy information and charge split morphology (grade). The charge cloud generated by a single X-ray photon has a relatively small size compared to ACIS pixel, and the shape is approximated by an axial-symmetric Gaussian with full width half maximum (FWHM) about 2 to 4 microns. This fact indicates that the …

Feature Partitioning For The Co-Traning Setting, Vineet Chaoji
Feature Partitioning For The Co-Traning Setting, Vineet Chaoji
Theses
Supervised learning algorithms rely on availability of labeled data. Labeled data is either scarce or involves substantial human effort in the labeling process. These two factors, along with the abundance of unlabeled data, have spurred research initiatives that exploit unlabeled data to boost supervised learning. This genre of learning algorithms that utilize unlabeled data alongside a small set of labeled data are known as semi-supervised learning algorithms. Data characteristics, such as the presence of a generative model, provide the foundation for applying these learning algorithms. Co-training is one such al gorithm that leverages existence of two redundant "views" for a …

Computer Aided Design Of The Pipelined Interconnect Free Logic, Vaibhav Avachat
Theses
The Pipelined Interconnect Free (PIF) logic design methodology has the potential to eliminate several problems that are faced by the modern technology digital designers. It is very easy to model and it gives an exact idea of the circuit layout during design phase only as it uses only one type of gate and does not have any global interconnects. The thesis discusses the PIF logic circuits, their applications and performance. It discusses the full implementation of a PIF one bit full adder starting from schematic to layout stage. It discusses the issues related to the implementation of larger PIF logic …

Emotional Recogition Ability Among Incarcerated Youth, Aubrey S. Elmore
Theses
The purpose of this study was to consider emotional recognition ability among incarcerated youth. Specifically, thirty-eight inmates who were eligible for a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) under New York State law participated in the study. Participants were administered Ekman's facial discrimination task (1976), the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form (SRM-SF; Gibbs, Basinger, &Fuller, 1992), and an Emotional Intelligence Survey (Schutte et al., 1998). Results showed the incarcerated youth were less accurate in identifying emotions from facial expressions than were non-incarcerated young adults. Further, incarcerated youth with identified learning disabilities were even less accurate in their ability to recognize emotions than …

Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom: Increasing Learning And Retention, Emily K. Hesek
Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom: Increasing Learning And Retention, Emily K. Hesek
Theses
A growing body of research suggests that intrinsic motivation and self-determination are key factors in academic achievement and success. The present study investigated whether children learned and retained information better when taught a social skills lesson using a self-determining approach, rather than a traditional directive lesson plan. In particular, this study examined whether lesson plans that included choice and autonomy support would affect students' intrinsic motivation for the task, and improve their learning and retention over time. Fifty-six fourth grade students from a large suburban school district in upstate New York participated. Significant group differences were found on a pre-test …

Task Influence Of Scene Content Selected By Active Vision, Marianne A. Lipps
Theses
This thesis investigated possible features that are used to guide saccadic eye movements in specific tasks, including a visual search task, answering questions about an image, and freely viewing images. Current eyetracking technology was used to gather eye movement records of subjects as they viewed images. A classical experiment that shows the influence of task on eye movements conducted by Alfred Yarbus was replicated under natural viewing conditions. In this experiment, 17 viewers were given a set of different instructions before viewing a Russian painting. Eye movement records were compared between tasks, and it was found that the instruction a …
Image Sequence Restoration By Median Filtering, Shawn R. Jackson
Image Sequence Restoration By Median Filtering, Shawn R. Jackson
Theses
Median filters are non-linear filters that fit in the generic category of order-statistic filters. Median filters are widely used for reducing random defects, commonly characterized by impulse or "salt and pepper" noise in a single image. Motion estimation is the process of estimating the displacement vector between like pixels in the current frame and the reference frame. When dealing with a motion sequence, the motion vectors are the key for operating on corresponding pixels in several frames. This work explores the use of various motion estimation algorithms in combination with various median filter algorithms to provide noise suppression. The results …
Technology Management In The Effective Implementation Of Change, Molly B. Kearns
Technology Management In The Effective Implementation Of Change, Molly B. Kearns
Theses
Organizational fitness is often achieved by making changes in business operations. These changes frequently involve the use of a new technology. The effective implementation of change is achieved by examining the benefits and challenges of technology management when making decisions. Important elements for consideration in technology management are technology evaluation, integration, planning, implementation, training, and change. A solution is proposed to combine and encompass all the elements of technology management to allow for the positive aspects and avoid the negative aspects of change implementation. The tool consists of principles to be addressed for each element.

Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp
Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp
Theses
Team software development is a complex and mostly unpredictable process and is characterized by inefficient use of staff and calendar resources. Given the magnitude of software development costs, a deeper understanding of the process may suggest ways to improve resource utilization. Simulation modeling is a useful approach to study the dynamics of complex systems. System dynamics characterizes systems as collections of interacting, non-linear feedback loops. The foundations of system dynamics were developed at MIT in the early 1950s. Since that time, system dynamics has been applied to a large number of complex system domains. In the early 1980s, the system …
The Effect Of Observational Method And Task Complexity On Neuropsychological Test Performance, Linda S. Lindman
The Effect Of Observational Method And Task Complexity On Neuropsychological Test Performance, Linda S. Lindman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Neuropsychologists are often called upon to conduct psychological examination in the presence of an observer in litigation cases despite research clearly demonstrating altered performance on neuropsychological tests under such conditions. Past research into the social facilitation effect suggests attentional conflict (Baron, 1986; Manstead & Semin, 1980) and increased anxiety (Guerin & Innes, 1982; Guerin, 1983) when observers are present and cannot be monitored. However, this research has found conflicting results depending upon the complexity of tasks and differences in observation condition. Meta analyses point to task complexity (Bond & Titus, 1983) and evaluation apprehension (Guerin, 1986) as important moderators of …

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation Of Flow Around Bluff-Bodies, Kevin Tubbs
Lattice Boltzmann Simulation Of Flow Around Bluff-Bodies, Kevin Tubbs
LSU Master's Theses
In this work, results from a 2-D Lattice Boltzmann (LB) solver are presented simulating flow past rectangular square cylinders at low Reynolds numbers (< 250). The LBGK equation is a hyperbolic equation that approximates the Navier Stokes equations in the nearly incompressible limit. It is a system of 9 one dimensional partial differential Hamiltonian-Jacobian equations, consisting of an advection and diffusive portion. The LB method is an alternative computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method used to numerically predict incompressible viscous flow. The current LB method uses a statistical mechanics formulation to solve the Boltzmann equation. The LB model captures the nonlinear Navier Stokes advection terms using linear streaming operators. In this thesis, the LB model is classified as an explicit, Lagrangian, finite-hyperbolicity and weakly compressible approximation of the Navier Stokes equations. The momentum flux tensor is captured locally as opposed to a pressure field eliminating the need to solve the Poisson equation. This allows the fluid structure interactions (FSI) behavior to be calculated elegantly at the interface through the mesoscopic momentum transfer between the fluid and structure. At this level, the forces are simultaneously calculated. The LB equations are discretized both in time and phase space using a standard D2Q9 lattice model. Validation tests for flow around single square cylinders at different aspect ratio at low Reynolds numbers are presented. Good agreement with other investigators is achieved. Flow past multiple bluff bodies (representing building in a city) is also presented. The vortex shedding simulations presented provide preliminary indications in terms of St that the LB method can be used to simulate high Re flow.
Material Length Scales In Gradient-Dependent Plasticity/Damage And Size Effects: Theory And Computation, Rashid Kamel Abu Al-Rub
Material Length Scales In Gradient-Dependent Plasticity/Damage And Size Effects: Theory And Computation, Rashid Kamel Abu Al-Rub
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Structural materials display a strong size-dependence when deformed non-uniformly into the inelastic range: smaller is stronger. This effect has important implications for an increasing number of applications in structural failure, electronics, functional coatings, composites, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), nanostructured materials, micro/nanometer fabrication technologies, etc. The mechanical behavior of these applications cannot be characterized by classical (local) continuum theories because they incorporate no ‘material length scales’ and consequently predict no size effects. On the other hand, it is still not possible to perform quantum and atomistic simulations on realistic time and structures. It is therefore necessary to develop a scale-dependent continuum theory …
Photo-Control Of Dna Oligonucleotides With Cage Compounds, Bilal Ghosn
Photo-Control Of Dna Oligonucleotides With Cage Compounds, Bilal Ghosn
LSU Master's Theses
Many biochemical processes in which DNA and other nucleic acids participate are central to functions in both living cells and in molecular biology assays. While many compounds have been used to regulate the activity of DNA, these strategies are limited to the aqueous-based diffusion of the activator to the target DNA molecule. An improvement to the induction of DNA bioactivity is to move to a light-based modulation. This research demonstrates a light-based technique using a photo-cleavable cage compound to transiently inactivate DNA hybridization. Function can be restored with exposure to near-UV light, allowing for temporal control of DNA oligonucleotide (ODN) …
