Quasioptimality Of Some Spectral Mixed Methods, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Leszek Demkowicz Jan 2004

Quasioptimality Of Some Spectral Mixed Methods, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Leszek Demkowicz

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we construct a sequence of projectors into certain polynomial spaces satisfying a commuting diagram property with norm bounds independent of the polynomial degree. Using the projectors, we obtain quasioptimality of some spectralmixed methods, including the Raviart–Thomas method and mixed formulations of Maxwell equations. We also prove some discrete Friedrichs type inequalities involving curl.

Identification Of Soybean Cultivars Tolerance To Waterlogging Through Analyses Of Leaf Nitrogen Concentration, Curt Jude Riche Jan 2004

Identification Of Soybean Cultivars Tolerance To Waterlogging Through Analyses Of Leaf Nitrogen Concentration, Curt Jude Riche

LSU Master's Theses

Irrigation to soybean can cause unintended water to pond on the soil surface for more than a desired amount of time. Most soybean acreage in Louisiana is planted on poorly drained clay soils and waterlogging of soybean can cause substantial yield reductions. Although cultural practices are available for ameliorating the adverse effects of waterlogging, little is known about genotypic tolerance, therefore our objectives were to determine if percent leaf nitrogen concentration could be used as a criterion for screening for cultivar tolerance to waterlogging and to identify waterlogging tolerance among 48 commercially available soybean cultivars. Forty-eight soybean cultivars were planted …

In Vitro Evaluation Of The Securos Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair System And Fluorocarbon Leader Line For Use As Lateral Fabella-Tibial Sutures, Max Nielsen Banwell Jan 2004

In Vitro Evaluation Of The Securos Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair System And Fluorocarbon Leader Line For Use As Lateral Fabella-Tibial Sutures, Max Nielsen Banwell

LSU Master's Theses

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common injury in the dog and major cause of degenerative joint disease. The pathophysiology of CCL rupture in the dog is well described. Osteoarthritis secondary to CCL rupture causes severe pain and lameness. There are many surgical techniques accepted for dogs with CCL rupture. A commonly performed technique is an extracapsular repair with a lateral fabella-tibial suture (LFS) using large diameter nylon leader line (NLL). Mechanical demands placed upon the LFS are high requiring the material used be able to withstand a high amount of force, undergo minimal elongation, and have a high …

Microhabitat Distribution And Demography Of Two Florida Scrub Endemic Plants With Comparisons To Their Habitat-Generalist Congeners, Satya Maliakal Witt Jan 2004

Microhabitat Distribution And Demography Of Two Florida Scrub Endemic Plants With Comparisons To Their Habitat-Generalist Congeners, Satya Maliakal Witt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I evaluated hypotheses regarding the nature of habitat specialization by comparing the microhabitat distribution and demography of L. cernua and P. basiramia, two Florida rosemary scrub habitat specialist species, with their habitat generalist congeners, L. deckertii and P. robusta. Specifically, I addressed the following two hypotheses: (1) that habitat specialist species may occur in a narrower range of microhabitat conditions than habitat generalist species, and (2) that demographic parameters of habitat specialist species may be more variable than those of their habitat generalist congeners. For each pair of congeners, I compared the microhabitat distributions, variation in vital rates and population …

Synthesis, Separation And Reactivities Of Multidentate Phosphine Ligands And Investigation Into Dirhodium Hydroformylation And Hydrocarboxylation Catalysis, David Aubry Jan 2004

Synthesis, Separation And Reactivities Of Multidentate Phosphine Ligands And Investigation Into Dirhodium Hydroformylation And Hydrocarboxylation Catalysis, David Aubry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A dirhodium homogeneous hydroformylation catalyst based on a tetraphosphine ligand, rac-Et2PCH2CH2P(Ph)CH2P(Ph)CH2CH2PEt2, rac-et,ph-P4, is under investigation. The ligand synthesis produces a racemic mixture and a facile and efficient method of separation of the racemic and meso diastereomers was achieved through reaction of et,ph-P4 with two equivalents of NiCl2 in EtOH to yield an almost quantitatively isolable precipitate of meso-Ni2Cl4(et,ph-P4) and the soluble rac-Ni2Cl4(et,ph-P4). Subsequent cyanolysis of these complexes liberates the et,ph-P4 ligand, and the …

Watermarking Using Decimal Sequences, Navneet Kumar Mandhani Jan 2004

Watermarking Using Decimal Sequences, Navneet Kumar Mandhani

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis introduces the use of decimal sequences in watermarking to hide information for authentication. The underlying system is based on code division multiple access (CDMA), which is a form of spread spectrum communication. Different algorithms for the use of decimal sequences have been formulated for use in black and white images. The watermark is spread across the carrier image by using the d- sequences of optimal period and retrieval is made by the use of correlation. Matlab version 6.5 was used to implement the algorithms discussed in this thesis. The advantage of using d-sequences over PN sequences is that …

Heidegger's Relationship To Kantian And Post-Kantian Thought, Ryan S. Hellmers Jan 2004

Heidegger's Relationship To Kantian And Post-Kantian Thought, Ryan S. Hellmers

LSU Master's Theses

I provide a close analysis of truth and freedom in Heidegger’s work during the passage from Being and Time (Sein und Zeit) in 1927 to the Contributions to Philosophy (Beiträge zur Philosophie) in 1938. This analysis demonstrates the passage from a Kantian style transcendental analysis of the self to an Idealist inspired study of being-historical thinking. Throughout this shift in thinking, the work of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling is shown to play an increasingly decisive role in Heidegger’s thought, finally leading him to an understanding of the self in terms of freedom, community, culture, and history that carries important …

Evaluation Of Rough Brucella Strains As Vaccines For Brucellosis And Pseudorabies In Swine, Lorraine Harrow Molin Jan 2004

Evaluation Of Rough Brucella Strains As Vaccines For Brucellosis And Pseudorabies In Swine, Lorraine Harrow Molin

LSU Master's Theses

Brucellosis and pseudorabies lead to abortion in pregnant sows and are perpetuated by feral swine reservoirs. A multivalent oral vaccine for these diseases would improve vaccination and eradication programs worldwide. Previous studies have shown that the rough attenuated Brucella strains RB51 and VTRS1, when administered subcutaneously to swine, stimulate host immune responses, transiently colonize tissues, and provide partial protection against virulent B. suis infection in pregnant sows. A plasmid encoding for the pseudorabies virus glycoprotein D (PRV gD) has also been added to these strains as part of this project. This study evaluates the use of these strains as oral …

"Ya Know Frenchy, You Talk A Broken Language": An Analysis Of Syllable-Coda Phonetic Realizations In Creole African American Vernacular English, Rachel Rose Mentz Jan 2004

"Ya Know Frenchy, You Talk A Broken Language": An Analysis Of Syllable-Coda Phonetic Realizations In Creole African American Vernacular English, Rachel Rose Mentz

LSU Master's Theses

Creole African American Vernacular English or CAAVE is a variety of English spoken by African Americans of French ancestry who live primarily in the French Triangle of Louisiana. Dubois and Horvath (2003b) have previously published on glide absence in CAAVE and have suggested that CAAVE is a unique dialect of English. They attribute CAAVE’s glide absence to the contact of Creole African Americans with diverse groups of English speakers and not to language interference from French. This research further pursues these hypotheses by studying the phonological realization of word final syllable-codas for six old male speakers of CAAVE. The reduction …

The Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On The Decomposition Of Belowground Organic Matter In A Sagittaria Lancifolia - Dominated Oligohaline Marsh, Kristen Raye Laursen Jan 2004

The Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On The Decomposition Of Belowground Organic Matter In A Sagittaria Lancifolia - Dominated Oligohaline Marsh, Kristen Raye Laursen

LSU Master's Theses

Wetlands improve water quality through sedimentation and the uptake of excess nutrients. As human population increases in the coastal zone, wetlands receive greater nutrient inputs. These additional nutrients may accelerate microbial activity, leading to faster decomposition rates. This decomposition could exceed belowground organic matter production, resulting in a net reduction in soil organic matter accumulation and vertical marsh accretion. The effects of nutrient enrichment on belowground organic matter decomposition in subtropical marshes have received little attention. As such, this research examined the effects of four levels of nitrogen combined with two levels of phosphorus enrichment on belowground decomposition through the …

Accelerating The Transition To A Sustainable Society, Christopher Brian Bennett Jan 2004

Accelerating The Transition To A Sustainable Society, Christopher Brian Bennett

LSU Master's Theses

As human populations increase, available land and resources decrease, and we begin to better understand the impacts of human activity on the environment, a strategy for human development that meets both the needs of society and the environment is being increasingly called upon. This movement has come to be known as sustainability. While this term is prevalent in the design and planning communities, it is important that this concept be brought to the attention of the general public, whom will ultimately decide the success or failure of this scheme. The question then is how to begin implementation of sustainable practices, …

"Don't Pooh-Pooh Our Poo Poo": Penalty, Subsidy, And Refusal To Fund In The Aftermath Of National Endowment For The Arts V. Finley, James Gaddy Jan 2004

"Don't Pooh-Pooh Our Poo Poo": Penalty, Subsidy, And Refusal To Fund In The Aftermath Of National Endowment For The Arts V. Finley, James Gaddy

LSU Master's Theses

Legal scholars said the National Endowment for the Arts v. Finley decision would create a "chilling effect" in government subsidy programs, and it unlawfully expanded the government speech doctrine. By analyzing cases that subsequently use Finley for a substantive part of their rationale, this article argues the opposite: the courts have rejected the government's attempts to interpret the decision as one that allows viewpoint discrimination and have not allowed the government to further a broad reading of the decision. The article also argues that, under the government speech doctrine, Finley provides the controlling precedent for truly "hybrid speech" cases where …

Lost In "Conceptual Space" : Metaphors Of Conceptual Integration, L. David Ritchie Jan 2004

Lost In "Conceptual Space" : Metaphors Of Conceptual Integration, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conceptual integration theory (Fauconnier & Turner, 1998, 2002) is re-examined in the light of recent criticisms (e.g., Gibbs, 2000, 2001). It is argued that the assumption of four independent "cognitive spaces" enters the model primarily as an entailment of the "space," "blending," and "construction" metaphors, leads to unnecessary ambiguity, and works against statement of the theory in a form that supports derivation of testable hypotheses. Several examples from Fauconnier and Turner (2002) are analyzed to show that they can be interpreted more simply, without need of four separate "spaces." Suggestions are made for reformulating conceptual integration theory without the problematic …

The Invention Of The Classics: Nationalism, Philology And Cultural Politics In Argentina, Fernando Degiovanni Jan 2004

The Invention Of The Classics: Nationalism, Philology And Cultural Politics In Argentina, Fernando Degiovanni

Publications and Research

By the end of 1915, two inexpensive book series devoted to the diffusion of colonial and nineteenth-century texts flooded the shelves of Argentine bookstores. Their deliberately resonant and all-encompassing names - La Biblioteca Argentina (The Argentine Library) and La Cultura Argentina (Argentine Culture) - were unmistakable signs of their nationalist character and aims. Developed respectively by Ricardo Rojas and José lngenieros, two of the most important intellectuals of Centennial Argentina, the nearly simultaneous launch of both series also underscored the editors' enduring competition to promote their contrasting versions of the nation's political and cultural past. The timing of the series' …

Visual Enhancing Of Tactile Perception In The Posterior Parietal Cortex, Tony Ro, Ruth Wallace, Judith Hagedorn, Alessandro Farnè, Elizabeth Pienkos Jan 2004

Visual Enhancing Of Tactile Perception In The Posterior Parietal Cortex, Tony Ro, Ruth Wallace, Judith Hagedorn, Alessandro Farnè, Elizabeth Pienkos

Publications and Research

The visual modality typically dominates over our other senses. Here we show that after inducing an extreme conflict in the left hand between vision of touch (present) and the feeling of touch (absent), sensitivity to touch increases for several minutes after the conflict. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the posterior parietal cortex after this conflict not only eliminated the enduring visual enhancement of touch, but also impaired normal tactile perception. This latter finding demonstrates a direct role of the parietal lobe in modulating tactile perception as a result of the conflict between these senses. These results provide evidence for visual-to-tactile perceptual …

Environmental Swap Energy And Role Of Configurational Entropy In Transfer Of Small Molecules From Water Into Alkanes, Pavel Smejtek, Robert Campbell Word Jan 2004

Environmental Swap Energy And Role Of Configurational Entropy In Transfer Of Small Molecules From Water Into Alkanes, Pavel Smejtek, Robert Campbell Word

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We studied the effect of segmented solvent molecules on the free energy of transfer of small molecules from water into alkanes (hexane, heptane, octane, decane, dodecane, tetradecane, and hexadecane). For these alkanes we measured partition coefficients of benzene, 3-methylindole (3MI), 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol (TeCP), and 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TriBP) at 3, 11, 20, 3, and 47 °C. For 3MI, TeCP, and TriBP the dependence of free energy of transfer on length of alkane chains was found to be very different from that for benzene. In contrast to benzene, the energy of transfer for 3MI, TeCP, and TriBP was independent of the number of carbons …

The Capital Asset Pricing Model: Theory And Evidence, Eugene F. Fama, Kenneth R. French Jan 2004

The Capital Asset Pricing Model: Theory And Evidence, Eugene F. Fama, Kenneth R. French

Dartmouth Scholarship

The capital asset pricing model (CAPM) of William Sharpe (1964) and John Lintner (1965) marks the birth of asset pricing theory (resulting in a Nobel Prize for Sharpe in 1990). Before their breakthrough, there were no asset pricing models built from first principles about the nature of tastes and investment opportunities and with clear testable predictions about risk and return. Four decades later, the CAPM is still widely used in applications, such as estimating the cost of equity capital for firms and evaluating the performance of managed portfolios. And it is the centerpiece, indeed often the only asset pricing model …

OBJECTIVE: To determine if differences between English- and Spanish-speaking parents in ratings of their children's health care can be explained by need for interpretive services.

METHODS: Using the Consumer Assessment of Health Plans Survey-Child-Survey (CAHPS), reports about provider communication were compared among 3 groups of parents enrolled in a Medicaid managed care health plan: 1) English speakers, 2) Spanish speakers with no self-reported need for interpretive services, and 3) Spanish speakers with self-reported need for interpretive services. Parents were asked to report how well their providers 1) listened carefully to what was being said, 2) explained things in a way …

Building Active Communities: Linking Lents, Carolyn Bonner, Dan Bower, Heather Marren, Michael Rose, Beth Shuck, Rania Wasfy Jan 2004

Building Active Communities: Linking Lents, Carolyn Bonner, Dan Bower, Heather Marren, Michael Rose, Beth Shuck, Rania Wasfy

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The purpose of the Linking Lents Project is to increase opportunities for physical activity in the Lents neighborhood. Both programming changes and physical changes to the built environment are needed to accomplish this goal. While a trailhead in the Lents neighborhood will attract some new users to the trail, a trailhead alone may not greatly increase trail use. A Lents trailhead constructed in conjunction with improved overall access to the trail, connections to neighborhood amenities and public education of the benefits of increased physical activity will increase Lents residents’ use of the trail. This project was conducted under the supervision …

A Comparison Of Modified Reconstructability Analysis And Ashenhurst‐Curtis Decomposition Of Boolean Functions, Anas Al-Rabadi, Marek Perkowski, Martin Zwick Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Modified Reconstructability Analysis And Ashenhurst‐Curtis Decomposition Of Boolean Functions, Anas Al-Rabadi, Marek Perkowski, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Modified reconstructability analysis (MRA), a novel decomposition technique within the framework of set‐theoretic (crisp possibilistic) reconstructability analysis, is applied to three‐variable NPN‐classified Boolean functions. MRA is superior to conventional reconstructability analysis, i.e. it decomposes more NPN functions. MRA is compared to Ashenhurst‐Curtis (AC) decomposition using two different complexity measures: log‐functionality, a measure suitable for machine learning, and the count of the total number of two‐input gates, a measure suitable for circuit design. MRA is superior to AC using the first of these measures, and is comparable to, but different from AC, using the second.

Using Design Of Experiments, Sensitivity Analysis, And Hybrid Simulation To Evaluate Changes To A Software Development Process: A Case Study, Wayne Wakeland, Robert H. Martin, David Raffo

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hybrid simulation models combine the high-level project issues of System Dynamics models along with the detailed process representation of discrete event simulation models. Hybrid models not only capture the best of both of these simulation paradigms, but they also are able to address new issues that are important in managing complex real-world development projects that neither the System Dynamics nor Discrete Event simulation paradigms are able to address alone.

In order to reap the full benefits from a simulation model, a structured approach for analyzing model results is necessary. The recommended approach is a combination of the Design of Experiments …
