Designing Time: A Laboratory For Time Based Design., Birger Sevaldson Nov 2004

Designing Time: A Laboratory For Time Based Design., Birger Sevaldson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designing Time is an experimental design studio at the Oslo School of Architecture, where the students are engaged in time based issues. The studio serves as a laboratory to invent, develop and test strategies and techniques relevant to time based design. Working with time helps students to develop the ability to investigate relations and systems and to understand these through time based analyses and abstraction. Working with time starts from observations of real life phenomena The observations ultimately lead to discovery of opportunities for interventions and in some cases innovation. The essay goes through several concepts and cases of time …

Discovering And Extracting Knowledge In The Design Project., Carl Disalvo, Jodi Forlizzi, Francine Gemperle Nov 2004

Discovering And Extracting Knowledge In The Design Project., Carl Disalvo, Jodi Forlizzi, Francine Gemperle

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Over the last twenty years, the rapid adoption of the graphical user interface followed by the emergence of the World Wide Web has created an increasing demand for interaction designers and interaction design research. Knowledge generated by interaction designers is needed not only by other designers, but also by researchers and practitioners from other disciplines. This evolution has generated increasing pressure for more refined models of design research and design research dissemination. To address this problem, we first explore the evolution of design documentation, detailing how it has evolved to meet the changing needs of designers. Then we present an …

New Tools For The Teaching Of Communication Design., Paul Cleveland Nov 2004

New Tools For The Teaching Of Communication Design., Paul Cleveland

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The basics of graphic design education have remained almost unchanged over the past 25 years. Apart from the introduction of computers and software as enabling tools, the concepts of what makes good design still relies on a mentoring or apprenticeship system. Knowledge and experience are transferred to the student through project work critiques, or by the analysis of seminal exemplars. Recent developments in generative design and computational models of focal visual attention indicate that software education tools for design based on professional experience and communications research can facilitate targeted design solutions.

Designers And Their Clients: An Anthropological View., Alun Price Nov 2004

Designers And Their Clients: An Anthropological View., Alun Price

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper will use examples from research in Australia and the United Kingdom to highlight the relationships between designers and clients. These relationships are sometimes difficult, balancing the needs of both parties can pose challenges for all involved. For example creative freedom can be constrained by financial considerations. For the designer creative freedom can be the most important factor in a job, however for a client, coming in on budget and market effectiveness are more likely to be valued. Salaman mentions sources of intrinsic satisfaction for architects, in a survey of 51 practitioners 63.46% mentioned creativity of work and the …

Conditions For Research Funding., Paul Van Der Lem Nov 2004

Conditions For Research Funding., Paul Van Der Lem

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper is based on published evidence of such funding of design research activities. It seeks to describe principles that have generated abilities to establish and increase streams of funding from governmental sources and the private sector with a stake in design research. Dipping into such streams of research funding, or creating them, is possible through mixing appropriate tactics and strategies of research approaches and methods. Ideas for such approaches are influenced by levels of realisation of the different needs of agents involved in creating worthwhile research. Prime movers for this process are of course the individuals concerned, but obtaining …

Designing A Methods Platform For Design And Design Research., Hans Kaspar Hugentobler, Wolfgang Jonas, Detlef Rahe Nov 2004

Designing A Methods Platform For Design And Design Research., Hans Kaspar Hugentobler, Wolfgang Jonas, Detlef Rahe

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Because of well-known deficiencies in design processes, design has been driven into a mostly executing role within the strategic process of corporate and social value creation. As both a consequence and reason, design is usually not included in the front-end phase of new product development processes, communication and corporate design, and its connectivity to other disciplines is weak. Nevertheless, we (still) believe that theory and methods, or: a knowledge-supported approach, are able to improve the quality of the process and the outcomes of designing as well as design's connectivity with other disciplines.

The Research-Exhibition: Some Useful On-Line Media For This Alternative Publication Format Of The Design Research Community., Alec Robertson Nov 2004

The Research-Exhibition: Some Useful On-Line Media For This Alternative Publication Format Of The Design Research Community., Alec Robertson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There is occasional discussion and studies done on the nature of design research and the success of its publication formats (1)(2)(3)(4). The topic was pursued by Rust and Robertson (5), who explored the notion of the ‘Research- Exhibition’ as an alternative to the research-paper at the DRS Biennial 2002 Common Ground Conference. This paper builds upon the experience of work on the on-line record of the experimental DRS Common Ground Exhibition 2002 (6), and reminds us of some of the general background issues identified by Rust and Robertson, its co- organisers. It provides further modest pointers as to possible use …

A Pilot Study Of Establishing An On-Line Design Audit Platform., Tung-Jung Sung, Chia-Hou Chen, Manlai You Nov 2004

A Pilot Study Of Establishing An On-Line Design Audit Platform., Tung-Jung Sung, Chia-Hou Chen, Manlai You

DRS Biennial Conference Series

To identify gaps between current and desired performance, audits of organizational activities have been developed in many areas. However, past studies take little account on a holistic inspection of the design activities of an enterprise in a practical way. Furthermore, the audit approach is evolving from the traditional manual process of paper documentation to a paperless, electronic, and online one. To continually inspect design activities, this study aims at developing an online design audit platform (ODAP) for application in an enterprise.

Beyond Regularity: Questions Concerning Usefulness., Terry Rosenberg Nov 2004

Beyond Regularity: Questions Concerning Usefulness., Terry Rosenberg

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper advances a motion that ‘usefulness’ is a regularity (Foucault) that haunts the programme of design and severely restricts it. It will highlight the way design practice is, in the main, constrained by narrow determination of its use(s), generally, and notions of ‘usefulness’ in particular. It will move to explain the way that design(ing) is flattened ontologically by embedded notions of ‘usefulness’ and that these embedded notions have set for design and its discourse a deontic straitjacket. That is, a set of obligations and duties that set a regular delimitation of design and thus rigid intentions for outcomes in …

Designing Design Research Within A Collaborative Research Centre: A Flexible Approach To Working With Scientists, Government, Industry And Academia., Lyndon Anderson, Lucy Allnutt, Christine Thony Nov 2004

Designing Design Research Within A Collaborative Research Centre: A Flexible Approach To Working With Scientists, Government, Industry And Academia., Lyndon Anderson, Lucy Allnutt, Christine Thony

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Whilst certain CRCs use industrial designers on a fee for service basis, few have been involved as key activity drivers from the beginning and for the duration of a CRC. The National institute of Design, Swinburne University of Technology has been involved since the beginning of the CRC for Wood Innovations. Appropriate design strategies suitable for PhD candidates and research in a variety of complex environments have been developed, implemented and continue to evolve.

User-Centred Approach In Visual And Spatial Reasoning: Design Research In Wayfinding Map Design., Christopher Kueh Nov 2004

User-Centred Approach In Visual And Spatial Reasoning: Design Research In Wayfinding Map Design., Christopher Kueh

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designing effective wayfinding maps to assist people to navigate effectively within a specific environment has always been an issue. According to Wright, ‘[users] have responded negatively to map design in the past ... ’(cited in Wood 1993). The aim of this paper is to address the importance of user-centred approaches in the design of wayfinding maps. In this paper I am proposing that graphic and information designers should emphasize the interaction processes between people and maps, people and the physical environment, and the relationship that people create between the map and the environment. This paper also suggests a speculative wayfinding …

Deconstruction Sites: An Interpretive Case Study Of The Design Of The Emerging Cultural Landscape., Vince Dziekan Nov 2004

Deconstruction Sites: An Interpretive Case Study Of The Design Of The Emerging Cultural Landscape., Vince Dziekan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper will critique museum spaces as an “institution” of artistic practice and evaluate the designed relationship of art to space and its predispositions. The research will investigate how artworks are not only accommodated by the architectural realization of physical spaces but also by the way that their design (acting as a “framework”) structures types of resulting art practices that can be supported and privileged by those spaces. Recognizing the intertwining of such design concerns has implications that extend to artistic practice, curatorship and art history.

Macroscopic Feature Driven Shape Generation Method For Curve Design Support., Yoshiki Ujiie, Yoshiyuki Matsuoka Nov 2004

Macroscopic Feature Driven Shape Generation Method For Curve Design Support., Yoshiki Ujiie, Yoshiyuki Matsuoka

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In styling design, the construction of method for representation of macroscopic feature and the construction of method for control of macroscopic feature are important. This paper describes the method for representation of macroscopic feature "complexity" in curved profile, and the shape generation method for control of complexity. Firstly, method for representation of macroscopic feature "complexity" was proposed. "Complexity" affects evaluation of the important factor on design, such as "beauty" and "similarity." In the present study, the method for representation of complexity was applied to the diverse curved profiles. As a result, it was found that curvature integration represents the complexity …

Transforming Strategic Brand Identity To Product Design References., Toni-Matti Karjalainen Nov 2004

Transforming Strategic Brand Identity To Product Design References., Toni-Matti Karjalainen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper presents a brief summary and main findings of the Author’s doctoral research. The dissertation is handed out to preliminary inspection in June 2004 and tentatively published by the end 2004. The research, titled as “Semantic transformation in design”, combines views of branding-related research and product semantics. Starting point for the study is a setting where a company, represented through its brand, aims to communicate predefined strategic identity to the target customer through product design. Semantic transformation refers to a framework where strategic orientations and goals that the company has defined for its brand get actualised (thus transformed) into …

Exploring Emotional Responses On Empathic Objects., Ming-Huang Lin, Yu-Hung Chien Nov 2004

Exploring Emotional Responses On Empathic Objects., Ming-Huang Lin, Yu-Hung Chien

DRS Biennial Conference Series

According to Franco Fornari’s theory of ‘affective codes’, and the concept of ‘transitional objects’ from the studies of British psycholoanalyst Donald Woods Winnicott, Alberto Alessi, the key figure in his organisation, has developed and established the language of empathic objects in the Alessi workshop and through subsequent production. These objects reveal great passion and display the strong Alessi identity. Alessi’s discovery illustrates a fascinating and exciting psychological approach to design. Based on his hypotheses, this research aims to probe people’s emotional responses when facing these objects.

Is Writing A Design Discipline?, Alke Groeppel-Wegener Nov 2004

Is Writing A Design Discipline?, Alke Groeppel-Wegener

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The objective of this paper is to reflect on the position and potential of the process of writing in contemporary undergraduate design education in the UK. By asking how far the activity of writing is a design process in itself (as the production of written material goes through the same cycles as designing does), the question will be asked whether there is a more pronounced place not only for encouraging students to use writing, but also teaching them about different styles (that include but are not exclusive to academic writing) on the curriculum. Would a greater awareness of writing as …

Circa (Computer Interactive Reminiscence And Conversation Aid): The Collaborative Research Process In Context Challenge., Gary Gowans, Jim Campbell Nov 2004

Circa (Computer Interactive Reminiscence And Conversation Aid): The Collaborative Research Process In Context Challenge., Gary Gowans, Jim Campbell

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There are estimated to be more than eighteen million Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) sufferers worldwide. Other dementia related clinical condi tions would significantly expand this estimation, and with human populations progressively becoming older, the incidence of age-related cognitive impairment is set to grow proportionately. Quality of reminiscence therapy can vary enormously depending upon many variables e.g. availability of resources, location, type of care environment etc. Current practice often relies upon physical props, e.g. old photo-albums.

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This research explains the specific relationship between consumer buying behavior and the package visual design. This research involves a questionnaire survey of consumers through the package visual design of green products with the Eco-label in Taiwan. The laundry detergent product category has been selected for the sample. The related research issues, such as functions of product package, green package design, definitions of green products, and green consumption, are also discussed. This research has explained the influential factors, including both categories of aesthetic and environmental appeal factors, to the green package visual design of the laundry detergent, which may help designers …

Trial-And-Error-Based Innovation: Rapid Materialisation As Catalyser Of Perception And Communication In Design., Jan Capjon Nov 2004

Trial-And-Error-Based Innovation: Rapid Materialisation As Catalyser Of Perception And Communication In Design., Jan Capjon

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design theory of the 1970s tried to map generalised approaches to design action (Cross et al. 1984), an endeavour which seems to have more or less evaporated in postmodern contextualisation. Can some common ground for making still be sketched – or will a future ground of designing only imply diversification? In my doctoral thesis (Capjon 2004) I have tried to map an effective landscape of design action which is shared by all collaborating actors regardless of background and have called its metaphorical depiction the Plant of Emerging Materiality– or PoEM. Its development is based on the capabilities of Rapid Prototyping …

Design For Sustainable Consumption., Miles Park Nov 2004

Design For Sustainable Consumption., Miles Park

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper examines current eco-design approaches that focus upon eco-efficiency strategies. It attempts to demonstrate how such strategies are failing to address the emergent issues of unsustainable consumption and are the cause of environmental ‘rebound effects’. This paper considers the importance of behavioural factors as a key to stemming unsustainable consumption. The transition from designing eco-efficient to eco-effective products and systems is considered. Design practice and methodologies are explored as a means to engage with these important issues. How do we engage designers and clients to go deeper and consider the cumulative context of product design and social/environmental issues? The …

The Comparison Between Novice And Expert Designers' Sketching In Conceptual Design., Hui-Hsia Chen, Manlai You Nov 2004

The Comparison Between Novice And Expert Designers' Sketching In Conceptual Design., Hui-Hsia Chen, Manlai You

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In many literature reviews, we find that sketching is confirmed as an activity of generating and developing ideas. The sketching activity is also a key factor of influencing idea generation. However, the focus of conceptual design is to develop the promising new concepts. We are primarily interested in finding a creation process and thinking by analysis of sketching activity in conceptual design. The aim is to support the validation of the importance of the sketch in conceptual design and to further explore an appropriate method for improving the efficiency of ideation activities. In addition, it is important to find the …

Branding Your Product: Product Identity And Its Application In China., Chen Jie, Eric Wear Nov 2004

Branding Your Product: Product Identity And Its Application In China., Chen Jie, Eric Wear

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper we introduce a new framework for categorising product identity strategies. While we have devised this as part of an ongoing study of the current competition among mobile handset producers in China, we anticipate this scheme may apply to other markets. Focusing on manufacturers who have previously operated without formal design strategies and in an environment in which design is itself an immature practice, our case studies are also very illuminating with regard to the general situation of consumer product design in China.

This study investigates: (a) the relationship between colour combinations and adjective combinations and (b) to verify the colour harmony theory developed by Angela Wright (called the Wright theory in this study). Two experiments were carried out with subjects from the following six countries: Britain, China, France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. In Experiment 1, 100 adjectives and 32 colours were used as stimuli presented on a calibrated Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor. All the colour stimuli were selected evenly from four colour groups, CG 1 to CG 4, which were defined according to the Wright theory, and so were the adjectives, …

Designers Searching Strategies Influenced By Information Retrieval Systems (Irs) Within The Early Stages Of The Industrial Design Process., Caroline Francis, Sam Bucolo, Vesna Popovic Nov 2004

Designers Searching Strategies Influenced By Information Retrieval Systems (Irs) Within The Early Stages Of The Industrial Design Process., Caroline Francis, Sam Bucolo, Vesna Popovic

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As Industrial Designers handle information within the early stages of the design process they are influenced by the information viewed which is an outcome of the Information Retrieval Systems (IRS) that they utilise. The purpose of this research is to investigate the influences that Information Retrieval Systems such as online Search Engines and Databases have on Industrial Designers’ early searching strategies. The study involves the observation of designers transforming early design language into query ‘keyword’ language for the operation of Information Retrieval Systems and how this transition causes a design direction shift. Findings show a common pattern across the activity …

Design And Morals In The Globalized Context., Robert Nelson Nov 2004

Design And Morals In The Globalized Context., Robert Nelson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper sets out to: • describe globalization in the context of product design, visual communication and multimedia; • describe the elements of design that matter in a moral sense and those that do not; • assess the vulnerability of design to pressure to become a promotional organ of global vanity; • explain the reluctance of authors to adopt a critical stance with regard to the vanity of many products; • identify the problems besetting design discourse, which cause it to be largely mute in the evaluation of design in the context of cultural life; and, • investigate the methodological …

Notions Of Practice: Design As Facilitation For Interactive Social Systems., Penny Hagen Nov 2004

Notions Of Practice: Design As Facilitation For Interactive Social Systems., Penny Hagen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper introduces the notion of ‘design as facilitation’ identifying some of the places it features in current research, and how it informs design of interactive social systems, such as multi-user communication technologies. This research is motivated by the shift in focus from the technical to the social in technology. A parallel shift in the notion of design practice is suggested in the move to understand interactive systems in relation to users as seen in design theory and interaction design research and methodology (Dourish 2001), (Preece et al 2002), (Winograd 1997). By examining the commonalities that exist in four different …

Reading Digital Clones In The Conservation Process., Matthew Cooke Nov 2004

Reading Digital Clones In The Conservation Process., Matthew Cooke

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores notions of ‘the virtual facsimile’, the copy and representation at a practice-oriented level and discusses them with relation to notions of ‘tracking’, ‘recording’ and ‘annotating’ design and design history through digital means. It begins by asking the question: if previsualisation software packages are useful in the representation phase of a construction project, how useful are they as markers and postvisualisation tools for pre-existing structures? Indeed, once modelled, how far departed from the original is the facsimile? Is it possible to extend the usefulness of these tools to include the representation of that which is already built and …

Many Worlds Ethics., Michael Linzey Nov 2004

Many Worlds Ethics., Michael Linzey

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Storrs McCall proposes a model of the universe in which the future is understood to branch into many worlds. The future is thus radically different than the past. This model provides a most useable platform for addressing a diversity of theoretical and practical problems in relation to architectural ethics. The paper discusses one dimension of this: the design ethics of Daniel Libeskind’s scheme for the reconstruction of New York Ground Zero. In post-Enlightenment ethics, Hume’s law asserts that there is no deductive relation between whatever “is” in the real world and whatever other things and conditions “ought” to be in …
