Translation Of Classifications: Issues And Solutions As Exemplifies In The Korean Decimal Classification., Barbara H. Kwasnik, You-Lee Chun

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The aim of this study was to describe how the Korean Decimal Classification (KDC), which is based on the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), accommodated translation and adaptation issues in making the scheme culturally hospitable. We made a concept-by-concept comparison of terms in selected sections of the KDC with the analogous terms or sections in the DDC, noting the differences and similarities of terms and structure. Our analysis suggests that, overall, the KDC succeeded in this endeavor, and that the process of adaptation made good use of several adaptive strategies identified in previous work: adjustments to term specificity and term location …

Faculty Articles

This report is part of Project Steve. Project Steve is, among other things, the first scientific analysis of the sex, geographic location, and body size of scientists named Steve. We performed this research for the best of all reasons: we discovered that we had lots of data. No scientist can resist the opportunity to analyze data, regardless of where that data came from or why it was gathered.

Responses Of Nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx Oryzivorus) To Habitat Edges, Eric Bollinger, Thomas Gavin Jul 2004

Responses Of Nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx Oryzivorus) To Habitat Edges, Eric Bollinger, Thomas Gavin

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

T.-Avoidance of habitat edges may be contributing to reduced densities of grass- land birds in small habitat patches. Nest densities for grassland-nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) were much lower than expected within 25 m of forest edges at three sites in New York, and that pattern ("edge avoidance") extended to 100 m at one site. Nests located within 50 m of forest or wooded hedgerow edges had lower daily survival rates, compared with nests >100 m from any habitat edge. Bobolinks tended to move away from forest edges when renest- ing after nest failure; that pattern was especially evident in females …

The Central Role Of Perilipin A In Lipid Metabolism And Adipocyte Lipolysis, John Tansey Jul 2004

The Central Role Of Perilipin A In Lipid Metabolism And Adipocyte Lipolysis, John Tansey

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

The related disorders of obesity and diabetes are increasing to epidemic proportions. The role of neutral lipid storage and hydrolysis, and hence the adipocyte, is central to understanding this phenomenon. The adipocyte holds the major source of stored energy in the body in the form of triacylglycerols (TAG). It has been known for over 35 years that the breakdown of TAG and release of free (unesterified) fatty acids and glycerol from fat tissue can be regulated by a cAMP-mediated process. However, beyond the initial signaling cascade, the mechanistic details of this lipolytic reaction have remained unclear. Work in recent years …

Bayesian Herders: Asymmetric Updating Of Rainfall Beliefs In Response To External Forecasts, Travis J. Lybbert, Christopher B. Barrett, John G. Mcpeak, Winnie Luseno

Economics - All Scholarship

Temporal climate risk weighs heavily on many of the world's poor. Model-based climate forecasts could benefit such populations, provided recipients use forecast information to update climate expectations. We test whether pastoralists in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya update
their expectations in response to forecast information and find that they indeed do, albeit with a systematic bias towards optimism. In their systematic optimism, these pastoralists are remarkably like Wall Street's financial analysts and stockbrokers. If climate forecasts have limited value to these pastoralists, it is due to the flexibility of their livelihood rather than an inability to process forecast information.

Immunoglobulin Heavy-Chain Receptor Editing Is Observed In The Nod/Scid Model Of Human B-Cell Development, G. R. Kolar, J. D. Capra Jul 2004

Immunoglobulin Heavy-Chain Receptor Editing Is Observed In The Nod/Scid Model Of Human B-Cell Development, G. R. Kolar, J. D. Capra

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Receptor editing and receptor revision are the two mechanisms of antibody diversity that result in either complete V-gene replacement or the formation of hybrid V genes. We do not yet understand how this process unfolds, because they are rare and difficult to study in vivo. In this study, we describe a family of VH4-34:VH4-61 hybrids isolated from a human B-cell chimeric non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficient mouse. The observation of hybrid immunoglobulin sequences in human B cells that developed in this model system makes it useful for the study of this mechanism of diversification and tolerance.

Mine Risk Education Project Of Unicef: A Formative Evaluation, Unicef

Global CWD Repository

Two decades of war in Sri Lanka have given rise to the problem of landmines and unexploded ordnances threatening the lives of civilians in the Northeast.

The United Nations and government of Sri Lanka initiated a mine action programme, which includes a Mine Risk Education Programme. Supported by UNICEF, it has been implemented since 1997 in the Jaffna District and Vanni region in close co-ordination with UNDP. Today, MRE has reached a professional standard, using tried and tested tools to promote mine-safe behaviour.

This formative evaluation study assesses the effect of MRE on the beneficiary communities. Field research was carried …

Neuroanatomical Structure Of The Spinner Dolphin (Stenella Longirostris Orientalis) Brain From Magnetic Resonance Images, Lori Marino, Keith Sudheimer, William A. Mclellan, John I. Johnson

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

High-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain of an adult spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris orientalis) were acquired in the coronal plane at 55 antero-posterior levels. From these scans a computergenerated set of resectioned virtual images in the two remaining orthogonal planes was constructed with the use of the VoxelView and VoxelMath (Vital Images, Inc.) programs. Neuroanatomical structures were labeled in all three planes, providing the first labeled anatomical description of the spinner dolphin brain.

Genetic Analysis Of Song Dialect Populations In Puget Sound White-Crowned Sparrows, Jill Soha, Douglas Nelson, Patricia Parker Jul 2004

Genetic Analysis Of Song Dialect Populations In Puget Sound White-Crowned Sparrows, Jill Soha, Douglas Nelson, Patricia Parker

Biology Department Faculty Works

The relationship between cultural variation and biological variation among natural populations has been the subject of both theoretical and empirical study. Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis is one of three subspecies of white-crowned sparrow known to form geographical song dialects. We investigated whether these dialects correspond to genetic differences among Z. l. pugetensis populations. We compared allele frequencies at four microsatellite loci in males from 11 sites spanning six dialects over the subspecies' range in Oregon and Washington. Cluster analysis and genotype assignment tests indicated no tendency for sample sites within dialect areas to be genetically more similar than are sites from …

Plan Of Management For The Point Quobba Fish Habitat Protection Area, Department Of Fisheries Jul 2004

Plan Of Management For The Point Quobba Fish Habitat Protection Area, Department Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

Point Quobba is a popular site for locals and tourists for beach activities, fishing and snorkelling, and as a place for children to learn to swim and gain an awareness of the marine environment. The marine life and habitats of the area are of considerable scientific and recreational interest and are highly valued in the local community. However, the area is at risk from a high level of use and from conflict between users - which is due to the area’s proximity to popular tourism sites, the boat ramp, camping and settlement areas.

Proposals For Community Discussion - A Quality Future For Recreational Fishing In The South Coast. A Five-Year Strategy For Managing The Recreational Component Of The Catch., South Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group.

Fisheries Management Papers

With a growing population and advances in technology, fishing pressure will continue to grow and anglers will become more efficient at targeting fish, particularly offshore demersal species such as blue groper, dhufish, red snapper, breaksea cod and queen snapper. There is also a clear need for recreational fisheries management to complement the existing management arrangements for the charter industry, and provide the necessary framework for recreational fishing to be incorporated into an integrated management framework with other fishing sectors.

Fisheries Management Paper No.180 - Future Management Arrangements For Western Australia's Temperate Shark Fisheries., Jane Borg, R. Mcauley

Fisheries Management Papers

This paper provides a summary of the attributes of these temperate shark fisheries, and sets out the proposed objectives and the measures available to achieve them.

In summary, primary measures are aimed at the sustainability of dusky and whiskery sharks, with dusky sharks being of greater concern as their status is more critical. The final decision on management of these fisheries cannot compromise sustainability, not only because of the Department’s obligations under the Fish Resources Management Act, 1994, but also:

• national and international obligations associated with ecologically sustainable development;

• export accreditation under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation …
