Clarification On The Nomenclatural Status Of Six Genus-Group Names In The Tribe Trichiini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae), Andrew Smith

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Six genus-group names in the tribe Trichiini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) are discussed with regards to their availability and validity under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Aleurostictus Kirby, Archimedius Kirby, Euclidius Kirby, Gymnodus Kirby, Tetrophthalmus Kirby, and Trichinus Kirby all have priority over most other generic names in the tribe but none of the names are in prevailing usage. Clarifications are needed due to the reemergence of Aleurostictus Kirby in current literature and confusion over the nomenclatural status of the other names. Type species are designated for Aleurostictus Kirby, Tetrophthalmus Kirby, and Stegopterus Burmeister and Schaum. The gender of the …

Cost Of Organic Pork Production: A Seasonal Analysis And Needed Price Premium For Continuous Production, James Kliebenstein, Sean P. Hurley, Ben Larson, Mark Honeyman

Agribusiness

Niche markets of agricultural products are experiencing rapid growth. One such niche market is organic pork. Organic pork production is a relatively new and expanding segment of the pork industry. Similar to some other niche markets, it has also experienced rapid growth (Organic Trade Association). It is well known that the cost of organic pork production is greater than for traditional pork production due to increased feed costs and decreased swine performance. The industry has dealt with this by paying premiums to induce producers to produce the organic product. However, it is not clear on what level or how the …

Household-Level Impacts Of Dairy Cow Ownership In Coastal Kenya, Charles F. Nicholson, Philip K. Thornton, Rahab W. Muinga

Agribusiness

This study uses heteroskedastic Tobit and Censored Least Absolute Deviations models to examine the impacts of dairy cow ownership on selected outcomes for a sample of 184 households in coastal Kenya. The outcomes examined include gross household cash income, gross non-agricultural income, consumption of dairy products, time allocated to cattlerelated tasks, number of labourers hired and total wage payments to hired labourers. The number of dairy cows owned has a large and statistically significant impact on household cash income; each cow owned increased income by at least 53% of the mean total income of households without dairy cows. Dairy cow …

The Holocaust And The Search For Forgiveness: An Invitation To The Society Of Jesus?, James Bernauer Jul 2004

The Holocaust And The Search For Forgiveness: An Invitation To The Society Of Jesus?, James Bernauer

Blumen Collection: Articles

Pope John Paul II has led the Church into a new era in its relationship with the Jewish Community. Progress rests on painstaking efforts to uncover the truth, identify failures where they exist, and humbly seek forgiveness. Recent scholarship presents a complex picture in Europe both before and immediately after the Second World War, both in the local churches and at the Vatican. Such candor prompts a question: Should the Society of Jesus, serving its own role in the universal Church, review its own history during this dark period, and where necessary, join in the Church’s search for forgiveness?

The Economics Of Patents And Copyright, François Lévêque, Yann Ménière Jul 2004

The Economics Of Patents And Copyright, François Lévêque, Yann Ménière

The Economics of Patents and Copyright

Economics is a powerful instrument to understand the current controversial issues on intellectual property: e.g., the extension of patents to software and business models, the lengthening of copyright protection, the compulsory licensing of pharmaceutical products or the legal suits against music downloaders.

Economics is also a powerful instrument to improve public policy. It helps to design the appropriate reform to adapt intellectual property law to the 21st century.

That is why we wrote this book and decided to deliver it for free.

In return of free access to this book, we expect two benefits: useful feedbacks and further diffusion. A …

Semiparametric Quantitative-Trait-Locus Mapping: Ii. On Censored Age-At-Onset, Ying Qing Chen, Chengcheng Hu, Rongling Wu

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In genetic studies, the variation in genotypes may not only affect different inheritance patterns in qualitative traits, but may also affect the age-at-onset as quantitative trait. In this article, we use standard cross designs, such as backcross or F2, to propose some hazard regression models, namely, the additive hazards model in quantitative trait loci mapping for age-at-onset, although the developed method can be extended to more complex designs. With additive invariance of the additive hazards models in mixture probabilities, we develop flexible semiparametric methodologies in interval regression mapping without heavy computing burden. A recently developed multiple comparison procedures is adapted …

How To Compare Different Conceptual Approaches To Metapopulation Modelling, Frank M. Hilker, Martin Hinsch, Hans Joachim Poethke Jul 2004

How To Compare Different Conceptual Approaches To Metapopulation Modelling, Frank M. Hilker, Martin Hinsch, Hans Joachim Poethke

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Models are essential tools in understanding population dynamics and deriving management measuresin the context of population viability analysis. However, very often the question arises which type ofmodel architecture is appropriate for a given situation. Mostly this situation is characterized by a shortage ofdata for model parameterization. In this study, an approach is presented to overcome this lack of real-worlddata by using the output of long-term simulation runs of specific individual-based models. Thus, it is possibleto evaluate the quality of macroscopic model predictions. Furthermore, this setting allows to compare totallydifferent types of metapopulation models. As an exemplary case study, this approach …

Stability Analyses Of The 50/50 Sex Ratio Using Lattice Simulation, Y. Itoh, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura Jul 2004

Stability Analyses Of The 50/50 Sex Ratio Using Lattice Simulation, Y. Itoh, K. Tainaka, J. Yoshimura

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The observed sex ratio is nearly one half in many animals including humans. Fisher explained thatthe 50/50 sex ratio is optimal. However, the 50/50 sex ratio seems highly unstable because a slight deviationfrom 50/50 changes the optimal ratio to the opposite extremes; zero or unity. Thus sex ratio should befluctuating wildly around 50/50. In contrast, the observed 50/50 sex ratios in wild populations seem to bevery stable. There should be some unknown mechanisms to stabilize the sex ratio 50/50. We build the latticemodel of mating populations. Each cell represents a male, a female, or an empty site. We perform latticesimulation …

Simulation Of Water And Carbon Fluxes In Agro- And Forest Ecosystems At The Regional Scale, J. Post, Valentina Krysanova, F. Suckow Jul 2004

Simulation Of Water And Carbon Fluxes In Agro- And Forest Ecosystems At The Regional Scale, J. Post, Valentina Krysanova, F. Suckow

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

To investigate effects of different land use management practices on carbon fluxes at the regional scale we developed an integrated model by coupling an ecohydrological river basin model SWIM (Soil and Water Integrated Model) and a soil organic matter model SCN (Soil-Carbon-Nitrogen model). The latter is a submodel of the forest growth model 4C. The extended integrated model combines hydrological processes, crop and vegetation growth, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus cycles and soil organic matter turnover. It is based on a three level spatial disaggregation scheme (basin, subbasin and hydrotopes), whereas a hydrotope is a set of elementary units in the subbasin …

How Tight Are The Limits To Land And Water Use? – Com-Bined Impacts Of Food Demand And Climate Change, Hermann Lotze-Campen, Christoph Mülle, Alberte Bondeau, Pascalle Smith, Wolfgang Lucht Jul 2004

How Tight Are The Limits To Land And Water Use? – Com-Bined Impacts Of Food Demand And Climate Change, Hermann Lotze-Campen, Christoph Mülle, Alberte Bondeau, Pascalle Smith, Wolfgang Lucht

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the coming decades, world agricultural systems will face serious transitions. Population growth, income and lifestyle changes will lead to considerable increases in food demand. Moreover, a rising demand for renewable energy and biodiversity protection may restrict the area available for food production. On the other hand, global climate change will affect production conditions, for better or worse depending on re-gional conditions. In order to simulate these combined effects consistently and in a spatially explicit way, we have linked the Lund-Potsdam-Jena Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (LPJ) with a "Management model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment" (MAgPIE). …

Assessing The Effects Of Agricultural Change On Nitrogen Fluxes Using The Integrated Nitrogen Catchment (Inca) Model, Katri Rankinen, Heikki Lehtonen, Kirsti Granlund, Ilona Bärlund Jul 2004

Assessing The Effects Of Agricultural Change On Nitrogen Fluxes Using The Integrated Nitrogen Catchment (Inca) Model, Katri Rankinen, Heikki Lehtonen, Kirsti Granlund, Ilona Bärlund

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The INCA (Integrated Nitrogen CAtchment) model is a semi-distributed, dynamic nitrogen modelwhich simulates nitrogen fluxes in catchments. Sources of nitrogen can be atmospheric deposition, the terrestrialenvironment or direct discharges. The model can simulate nitrogen processes in six land use classes. There are three components included; the hydrological model, the catchment nitrogen process model and theriver nitrogen process model. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of three different agriculturalpolicy scenarios on inorganic nitrogen flux to the sea from Finnish catchments. Target years of these scenariosare 2010 and 2020. The changes in agricultural production in different scenarios of agricultural …

Responses Of Nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx Oryzivorus) To Habitat Edges, Eric K. Bollinger, Thomas A. Gavin Jul 2004

Responses Of Nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx Oryzivorus) To Habitat Edges, Eric K. Bollinger, Thomas A. Gavin

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

T.-Avoidance of habitat edges may be contributing to reduced densities of grass- land birds in small habitat patches. Nest densities for grassland-nesting Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) were much lower than expected within 25 m of forest edges at three sites in New York, and that pattern ("edge avoidance") extended to 100 m at one site. Nests located within 50 m of forest or wooded hedgerow edges had lower daily survival rates, compared with nests >100 m from any habitat edge. Bobolinks tended to move away from forest edges when renest- ing after nest failure; that pattern was especially evident in females …
