Comparative Analysis Of Coronary Artery Bypass: Costs Of Off-Pump Vs. Conventional Techniques With Variable Bonded Circuits And Drug Strategies, Michael M. Wyckoff Jul 2004

Comparative Analysis Of Coronary Artery Bypass: Costs Of Off-Pump Vs. Conventional Techniques With Variable Bonded Circuits And Drug Strategies, Michael M. Wyckoff

Graduate Research Projects

As baby boomers age, estimated to reach 78.8 million Americans over the age of 65 by 2050, their health care costs are skyrocketing. Increased costs in coronary artery bypass surgery have been linked to length of stay (LOS), the inflammatory response, and blood loss related to conventional coronary artery bypass (C-CAB). Off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) has become a popular alternative to C-CAB. Utilizing proximal connector devices has truly made this option "clampless." If detrimental outcomes can be linked to cross clamping, the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may diminish. When the use of CPB is necessary, there are a …

The Use Of Conventional International Law In Combating Terrorism: A Maginot Line For Modern Civilization Employing The Principles Of Anticipatory Self-Defense & Preemption, Joshua E. Kastenberg Jul 2004

The Use Of Conventional International Law In Combating Terrorism: A Maginot Line For Modern Civilization Employing The Principles Of Anticipatory Self-Defense & Preemption, Joshua E. Kastenberg

Faculty Scholarship

This article analyzes the existing concepts of the right of self-defense and preemption under international law. Part I quickly reviews both the evolution of warfare and the state of religious-based terrorism. The former presents a useful starting point for understanding customary international law and its subset, generally referred to as "the laws and customs of war. Customary international law provides context to the application and shortcomings of contemporary codified international law, and, therefore, serves an important heuristic function in understanding the international legal limits on combating this increasingly frequent form of terrorism. In the end, this article concludes that both …

A Fickle Thermometer Of Womens Health: Carioca Medical Professionals And Gynecology, 1836-1842', Suzanne M. Schadl

Latin American Collections Publications

In English: This essay examines how medical professionals in Rio de Janeiro during the late 1830s relied on language and historical representation to further inscribe gendered, racial, and class distinctions that enabled a select group of men to make women and their personal hygiene objects of study. Medical writers combined experimental studies of race, class, and ethnicity with historical discussions of gender to form and present rhetorical differences in scientific terms. Though many of these professionals themselves as objective, they used linguistic tools to investigate and to prove or disprove their hypotheses, always drawing also from cultural myths, in this …

Retrospective Isotopic Analyses Of Stellar Sea Lion Tooth Annuli And Sea-Bird Feathers: A Cross-Taxa Approach To Investigating Regime And Dietary Shifts In The Gulf Of Alaska, Keith Hobson, Elizabeth Sinclair, Anne York, James Thomason, Richard Merrick Jul 2004

Retrospective Isotopic Analyses Of Stellar Sea Lion Tooth Annuli And Sea-Bird Feathers: A Cross-Taxa Approach To Investigating Regime And Dietary Shifts In The Gulf Of Alaska, Keith Hobson, Elizabeth Sinclair, Anne York, James Thomason, Richard Merrick

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) values of individual tooth annuli of female Steller sea lions (n = 120) collected from the 1960s through the 1980s were used for retrospective analyses of temporal changes in food webs in the Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific Ocean. We also examined isotopically contour feathers of tufted puffins (n = 135) and crested auklets (n = 37) through this period to test for broader isotopic patterns indicative of whole food web changes. Steller sea lions decreased slightly in δ13C and increased in δ15N values, suggesting an …

Possible Courses: Multi-Objective Modelling And Decision Support Using A Bayesian Network Approximation To A Nonpoint Source Pollution Model, David Swayne, Jie Shi Jul 2004

Possible Courses: Multi-Objective Modelling And Decision Support Using A Bayesian Network Approximation To A Nonpoint Source Pollution Model, David Swayne, Jie Shi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Modelling systems frequently work in a single domain, such as physical or chemical process modelling, hydrology or combinations, to simulate process in nature such as pollution transport or the production of food or manufactured goods. Side-effects of agro-industrial processes, or gains / losses from production enterprises are separately modelled without the ability to examine trade-offs or alternatives. Multi-objective modeling attempts to combine "apples and oranges" through decision theoretical principles. Such treatments can couple production and waste systems to quantify the economic cost of remediation. We demonstrate such an application, from the data acquisition, model calibration through to the hypothesis testing, …

An Integrated Modelling Approach To Conduct Multifactorial Analyses On The Impacts Of Climate Change On Whole-Farm Systems., M. Rivington, Gianni Bellocchi, K. B. Matthews, K. Buchan

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Climate change impact studies on whole-farm systems require a holistic approach due to the complexities of biophysical processes, management and inter-relationships of land use within a single farm. This paper details the process of utilising a multiple-objective, strategic land use planning tool to conduct multi-factorial analyses on the impacts of climate change at the farm scale. Two example sites are given to illustrate the flexibility of the method: an upland mixed sheep and suckler cow farm in Scotland, with cold wet winters and cool moist summers; and a combined cropping and indoor reared beef farm in Italy, with cool moist …

Site Planning At Tamborine Mountain, Gold Coast, Australia, Christine Lim, Michael Mcaleer, Yu-Chi Wang

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Tamborine Mountain is a 25 square kilometre plateau located within the urban-rural fringe of the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Renowned for its superb climate, spectacular views, lush farmland and subtropical rainforest, Tamborine Mountain offers a wide variety of nature-based tourism activities such as bushwalking, rainforest appreciation and wine tasting. This phenomenon requires the harmonious development of tourism and the environment. This paper examines site planning at Tamborine Mountain, with a focus on two of its main tourist attractions, namely the Winery and National Parks. A strategic approach is used to evaluate some of the strengths and weaknesses of their existing …

Aphid Population Dynamics In Agricultural Landscapes: An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Hazel Parry, Andrew J. Evans, Derek Morgan Jul 2004

Aphid Population Dynamics In Agricultural Landscapes: An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Hazel Parry, Andrew J. Evans, Derek Morgan

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Presently, there are many population models in existence, but these are often case specific, function at a single spatial scale and fail to tackle the complexity arising from individual actions andinteractions that exist in the real-world. A spatially explicit agent-based simulation model has beendeveloped to represent aphid population dynamics in agricultural landscapes. Over time, the aphid agentsinteract with the landscape and with one another. The construction of the model is detailed, includingparameterisation and coupling to a geographical information system (GIS). The results show that a spatialmodelling approach that considers both landscape properties and factors such as wind speed and directionprovides greater …

Constraints On Adaptive Evolution: The Functional Trade-Off Between Reproduction And Fast-Start Swimming Performance In The Trinidadian Guppy (Poecilia Reticulata), Cameron K. Ghalambor, David N. Reznick, Jeffrey A. Walker Phd Jul 2004

Walker Phd

Faculty Publications

The empirical study of natural selection reveals that adaptations often involve trade-offs between competing functions. Because natural selection acts on whole organisms rather than isolated traits, adaptive evolution may be constrained by the interaction between traits that are functionally integrated. Yet, few attempts have been made to characterize how and when such constraints are manifested or whether they limit the adaptive divergence of populations. Here we examine the consequences of adaptive life-history evolution on locomotor performance in the live-bearing guppy. In response to increased predation from piscivorous fish, Trinidadian guppies evolve an increased allocation of resources toward reproduction. These populations …
