Correcting Publication Bias In Meta-Analysis: A Truncation Approach, Guillermo Montes, Bohdan S. Lotyczewski
Correcting Publication Bias In Meta-Analysis: A Truncation Approach, Guillermo Montes, Bohdan S. Lotyczewski
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Meta-analyses are increasingly used to support national policy decision making. The practical implications of publications bias in meta-analysis are discussed. Standard approaches to correct for publication bias require knowledge of the selection mechanism that leads to publication. In this study, an alternative approach is proposed based on Cohen’s corrections for a truncated normal. The approach makes less assumptions, is easy to implement, and performs well in simulations with small samples. The approach is illustrated with two published meta-analyses.

Comparison Of Viral Trajectories In Aids Studies By Using Nonparametric Mixed-Effects Models, Chin-Shang Li, Hua Liang, Ying-Hen Hsieh, Shiing-Jer Twu
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The efficacy of antiretroviral therapies for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can be assessed by studying the trajectory of the changing viral load with treatment time, but estimation of viral trajectory parameters by using the implicit function form of linear and nonlinear parametric models can be problematic. Using longitudinal viral load data from a clinical study of HIV-infected patients in Taiwan, we described the viral trajectories by applying a nonparametric mixed-effects model. We were then able to compare the efficacies of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and conventional therapy by using Young and Bowman’s (1995) test.
Deconstructing Arguments From The Case Against Hypothesis Testing, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Deconstructing Arguments From The Case Against Hypothesis Testing, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The main purpose of this article is to contest the propositions that (1) hypothesis tests should be abandoned in favor of confidence intervals, and (2) science has not benefited from hypothesis testing. The minor purpose is to propose (1) descriptive statistics, graphics, and effect sizes do not obviate the need for hypothesis testing, (2) significance testing (reporting p values and leaving it to the reader to determine significance) is subjective and outside the realm of the scientific method, and (3) Bayesian and qualitative methods should be used for Bayesian and qualitative research studies, respectively.

The Application And Evaluation Of Modified Atmosphere Packaging In Selected Minimally Processed Vegetables, Aine Greene
Masters
The central aim of this study was to optimise the processing and storage of selected vegetable within the parameters of extended shelf life, time/temperature relationships and sensory quality. The vegetables were selected on the basis of the results of a survey of the Irish vegetable industry. The current literature in the field of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and the Irish vegetable industry was reviewed. The current state and future requirements of the Irish vegetable industry was investigated through the use of a questionnaire. This established the views of Irish vegetable purchasers (food service, fast food and retail outlets), in relation …

Towards A New Form Of Opera Production, David Smith, Frederick Bianchi
Towards A New Form Of Opera Production, David Smith, Frederick Bianchi
Publications and Research
Opera has historically been one of the most expensive and complex art forms to produce, limiting its accessibility and viability, especially for smaller companies and touring productions. This paper proposes a new model for opera production that utilizes emerging technologies—such as synchronized digital music systems, real-time projection, and programmable lighting—to create high-quality operatic experiences at significantly reduced cost. By leveraging tools like the Sinfonia system for musical timing and dynamic visual elements controlled by digital protocols, opera can be made portable, repeatable, and customizable. The model aims not to replace traditional opera but to supplement it with efficient, flexible systems …
Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe
Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe
Reports
We are currently living through an era where we can, and need to, create exciting new possibilities in the way we think about, plan, design and build new places and spaces for working and living. At the same time, two irresistible forces – change and complexity – face decision-makers charged with framing and executing future policy and practice for the built and human environment. This paper generally argues the case for employing a ‘prospective’ process through scenario thinking for strategic planning and management in the urban arena. It does not attempt to identify or explore the advances made in planning …

Building An Environmental Ethic From The Ground Up, Alyson C. Flournoy
Building An Environmental Ethic From The Ground Up, Alyson C. Flournoy
UF Law Faculty Publications
Over the last twenty years there has been a remarkable theoretical flourishing in the field of environmental philosophy, with the development of biocentric ethics, animal rights theories, deep ecology, ecofeminism, modified utilitarianism, moral pluralism and theories drawing on numerous religious and cultural traditions. These theories explore the intellectual and moral causes for the environmentally destructive practices of the dominant western industrial and economic culture, and propose alternatives that might avoid these consequences. This symposium raises a worthy question: to what extent have these theories had practical impact on environmental law and policy. I come to this question as a lawyer …

Makes Sense To Me: How Moderate, Targeted Federal Tort Reform Legislation Could Solve The Nation's Asbestos Litigation Crisis, Mark H. Reeves
Makes Sense To Me: How Moderate, Targeted Federal Tort Reform Legislation Could Solve The Nation's Asbestos Litigation Crisis, Mark H. Reeves
Vanderbilt Law Review
During the three decades he spent working as a machinist for the United States Navy, Henry Plummer suffered continuous exposure to the asbestos used in the insulation, gaskets and pipe coverings of warships. In late 1999, a biopsy confirmed that he had developed mesothelioma, a gruesome type of cancer that kills all those who contract it and is caused only by asbestos. In an effort to combat his cancer, Mr. Plummer embarked on a long, painful course of treatments that included chemotherapy and the removal of his left lung in April 2000. In early 2001, however, Mr. Plummer's doctor informed …
Having Failed To Defend, An Insurer Can Still Argue Lack Of Coverage - Royal Insurance Co. Of America V. Kirksville College Of Osteopathic Medicine, Inc., Matthew Towns
Missouri Law Review
This Note explores the consequences of an insurer’s breach of the duty to defend under Missouri case law. It also examines the theories applied in other states in support of the position that a breach of the duty to defend entails loss of the right to argue lack of coverage. The Note concludes that the holding in Royal insurance Co. of America v. Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Inc. resolved a burgeoning controversy by clarifying insurers’ rights to an extent unknown in other jurisdictions.

Pelvic Hematoma Resulting In Obstructive Uropathy, Ahmed A. Abdulwahab, Salah Hassan, Lulu Al-Nuaim, Rabie Abdel Halim
Saudi Medical Journal
The use of anticoagulants, for whatever indication, may carry a high risk of hematoma formation following surgery. Obstructive uropathy is a very rare but possible example of complication secondary to an extensive pelvic hematoma. We describe a case of a patient with rheumatic heart disease and aortic valve replacement, who developed a massive postoperative pelvic hematoma following bilateral tubal ligation, resulting in bilateral ureteric obstructions. This was treated with bilateral ureteric stent through cystoscopy.

Unpacking New Policing: Confessions Of A Former Neighborhood District Attorney, Alafair Burke
Unpacking New Policing: Confessions Of A Former Neighborhood District Attorney, Alafair Burke
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article attempts to re-frame a burgeoning scholarly debate about the appropriateness of neighborhood self-governance as both a means to local crime control and a normatively worthy end in itself. On one side of the existing debate stands an emerging and influential group of "new discretion" scholars, who defend the delegation of discretion to police officers attempting to enforce social norms that are often ambiguous. These scholars argue that the support and involvement of so-called "communities" in such law enforcement efforts can be an adequate substitute for traditional judicial scrutiny of police discretion, particularly the prohibition against vague criminal laws. …

Who Can Defend A Federal Regulation? The Ninth Circuit Misapplied Rule 24 By Denying Intervention Of Right In Kootenai Tribe Of Idaho V. Veneman, Stephanie D. Matheny
Washington Law Review
In Kootenai Tribe of Idaho v. Veneman, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit misapplied Rule 24 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure by denying intervention of right to organizations that had protectable interests in the adoption and implementation of the Roadless Rule. The court based its decision to deny intervention of right on its federal defendant rule, which bars intervention of right by parties other than the federal government to defend a challenge brought under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The Kootenai decision extended the reach of the federal defendant rule to include …
Alternative Governance: A Tool For Military Laboratory Reform, Timothy Coffey, Kenneth W. Lackie, Michael L. Marshall
Alternative Governance: A Tool For Military Laboratory Reform, Timothy Coffey, Kenneth W. Lackie, Michael L. Marshall
Defense Horizons
Throughout the Cold War, the United States maintained an edge over adversaries by fielding technologically superior warfighting systems. This strategy depended on a strong research and development (R&D) effort in both the public and private sectors, and the community of military laboratories in the Department of Defense played an essential role in the overall effort. Because of the importance of these labs during the Cold War, defense planners continually focused on ways to improve and strengthen them.
The end of the Cold War, however, shifted the focus away from laboratory improvement toward consolidation, closure, realignment, and personnel downsizing, as many …
