The Restructuring In The Post-Crisis Korean Economy, Jai S. Mah Nov 2003

The Restructuring In The Post-Crisis Korean Economy, Jai S. Mah

Economics Working Papers

The current paper evaluates the restructuring measures implemented in the post-crisis Korean economy. Its policies taken after the economic crisis were quite successful in terms of economic recovery. The financial and corporate sector reforms undertaken by the Korean government contributed to strengthening the banking and corporate sectors, attracting FDI inflows. However, most indicators show worsening of income inequalities and workers. situation regarding job security. The strengths as well as the weaknesses of the development strategy of Korea and its reform measures undertaken since the occurrence of the economic crisis need to be differentiated.

Methods For Estimating Long-Distance Dispersal, Ran Nathan, Gad Perry, James T. Cronin, Allan E. Strand, Michael L. Cain

Long-distance dispersal (LDD) includes events in which propagules arrive, but do not necessarily establish, at a site far removed from their origin. Although important in a variety of ecological contexts, the system-specific nature of LDD makes "far removed" difficult to quantify, partly, but not exclusively, because of inherent uncertainty typically involved with the highly stochastic LDD processes. We critically review the main methods employed in studies of dispersal, in order to facilitate the evaluation of their pertinence to specific aspects of LDD research. Using a novel classification framework, we identify six main methodological groups: biogeographical; Eulerian and Lagrangian movement/redistributional; short-term …

Identification Of Three Genomic Haplotypes 5′ To The Human Cd1d Gene And Their Distribution In Four Ethnic Groups, Q. Y. Chen, N. Jackson, A. Vargas, S. Chalew, J. Rao, M. Batzer, M. S. Lan, Y. H. Chang, M. Mokhashi, D. Liu Nov 2003

CD1d presents lipid antigen to a conserved population of natural killer (NK) T cells, which participate in host immune defense, tumor cell rejection and suppression of autoimmunity. The levels of human CD1d expression vary significantly between individuals. To understand such variation, we sequenced the region up to 1.7 kb 5′ upstream of the translation start site and partially through exon 2 in 44 white Americans. We also studied two tagged single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in 112 white Americans, 60 African-Americans, 88 Europeans, and 84 Chinese people from the region. Six SNP present in the region (-836C→T, -773C→T, -764C→G, -713A→T, -365A→G …

Can One Estimate The Conditional Distribution Of Post-Model-Selection Estimators?, Hannes Leeb, Benedikt M. Pötscher Nov 2003

Can One Estimate The Conditional Distribution Of Post-Model-Selection Estimators?, Hannes Leeb, Benedikt M. Pötscher

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider the problem of estimating the conditional distribution of a post-model-selection estimator where the conditioning is on the selected model. The notion of a post-model-selection estimator here refers to the combined procedure resulting from first selecting a model (e.g., by a model selection criterion like AIC or by a hypothesis testing procedure) and second estimating the parameters in the selected model (e.g., by least-squares or maximum likelihood), all based on the same data set. We show that it is impossible to estimate this distribution with reasonable accuracy even asymptotically. In particular, we show that no estimator for this distribution …

Nonparametric Tests For Common Values In First-Price Sealed-Bid Auctions, Philip A. Haile, Han Hong, Matthew Shum Nov 2003

Nonparametric Tests For Common Values In First-Price Sealed-Bid Auctions, Philip A. Haile, Han Hong, Matthew Shum

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We develop tests for common values at first-price sealed-bid auctions. Our tests are nonparametric, require observations only of the bids submitted at each auction, and are based on the fact that the “winner’s curse” arises only in common values auctions. The tests build on recently developed methods for using observed bids to estimate each bidder’s conditional expectation of the value of winning the auction. Equilibrium behavior implies that in a private values auction these expectations are invariant to the number of opponents each bidder faces, while with common values they are decreasing in the number of opponents. This distinction forms …

A Behavioral Model Of Bargaining With Endogenous Types, Dilip Abreu, David G. Pearce Nov 2003

A Behavioral Model Of Bargaining With Endogenous Types, Dilip Abreu, David G. Pearce

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We enrich a simple two-person bargaining model by introducing “behavioral types” who concede more slowly than does the average person in the economy. The presence of behavioral types profoundly influences the choices of optimizing types. In equilibrium, concessions are calculated to induce “reciprocity”: a substantial concession by player i is followed by a period in which j is much more likely to make a concession than usual. This favors concessions by i that are neither very small nor large enough to end the bargaining immediately. A key difference from the traditional method of perturbing a game is that the actions …

Yieldlike Constitutive Transition In Shear Flow Of Entangled Polymeric Fluids, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang Nov 2003

Yieldlike Constitutive Transition In Shear Flow Of Entangled Polymeric Fluids, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

We describe an unexpected constitutive transition in entangled polymer solutions. At and beyond a critical stress, the initial spatially homogeneous and well-entangled sample transforms from its entangled (coiled) state into a fully disentangled (stretched) state over a period during which the resulting shear rate increases in a spatially inhomogeneous fashion. In the mode of controlled shear rate, the sample exhibits a stress plateau over three decades. Flow birefringence and normal stress observations unravel additional features of these flow phenomena.

Aerobic Denitrification Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Monitored By Online Nad(P)H Fluorescence, Fan Chen, Qing Xia, Lu-Kwang Ju

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Continuous cultures of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027) maintained at different dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO) were studied for the effects of DO on various culture properties, especially aerobic respiration and denitrification. The DO was varied from 0 mg/liter (completely anoxic conditions) to 1.3 mg/liter and measured with optical sensors that could accurately determine very low DO based on oxygen-quenched luminescence. The strain was found to perform aerobic denitrification; while the specific rate decreased with increasing DO, denitrification persisted at approximately 1/8 of the maximum rate (1.7 mmol/g of cells/h) even at relatively high DO (1 to 1.3 mg/liter). In the presence …

Converting Plant Biomass To Fuels And Commodity Chemicals In South Africa: A Third Chapter?, L R. Lynd, H H Von Blottnitz, B Tait, J De Boer, I S. Pretorius, K Rumbold, W H. Van Zyl Nov 2003

Converting Plant Biomass To Fuels And Commodity Chemicals In South Africa: A Third Chapter?, L R. Lynd, H H Von Blottnitz, B Tait, J De Boer, I S. Pretorius, K Rumbold, W H. Van Zyl

Dartmouth Scholarship

There have been two distinct chapters in the history of converting cellulosic biomass to fuels and commodity chemicals in South Africa. The first chapter, fromthe late 1970s to the early 1990s, involved some of the most active research and development efforts of their kind anywhere in the world. Thereafter, during the second chapter, there has been very little activity in the field in South Africa while there has been an unprecedented awakening to the potential of biomass conversion elsewhere. This paper considers the rationale and possible benefits of a potential third chapter based on a revitalized effort on biomass conversion …

Heralded Two-Photon Entanglement From Probabilistic Quantum Logic Operations On Multiple Parametric Down-Conversion Sources, Todd B. Pittman, Michelle M. Donegan, Michael J. Fitch, Bryan C. Jacobs, James D. Franson, Pieter Kok, Hwang Lee, Jonathan P. Dowling Nov 2003

Heralded Two-Photon Entanglement From Probabilistic Quantum Logic Operations On Multiple Parametric Down-Conversion Sources, Todd B. Pittman, Michelle M. Donegan, Michael J. Fitch, Bryan C. Jacobs, James D. Franson, Pieter Kok, Hwang Lee, Jonathan P. Dowling

Faculty Publications

An ideal controlled-NOT gate followed by projective measurements can be used to identify specific Bell states of its two input qubits. When the input qubits are each members of independent Bell states, these projective measurements can be used to swap the post-selected entanglement onto the remaining two qubits. Here we apply this strategy to produce heralded two-photon polarization entanglement using Bell states that originate from independent parametric down-conversion sources, and a particular probabilistic controlled-NOT gate that is constructed from linear optical elements. The resulting implementation is closely related to an earlier proposal by Sliwa and Banaszek, and can be intuitively …

An Analysis Of Single Clutch Paternity In The Burrower Bug Sehirus Cinctus Using Microsatellites, Jeremy M. Brown, Aneil F. Agrawal, Edmund D. Brodie

Faculty Publications

Recent studies of the burrower bug, Sehirus cinctus, have examined the genetic basis of parental care. An understanding of the burrower bug mating system, and the subsequent pattern of offspring relatedness that this system generates, is critical to further interpret genetic data. To this end, we developed three consistently amplifiable highly polymorphic microsatellite loci and used them to determine genotypic patterns at the level of both the population and the single clutch. We found that all clutches were sired by single males. Further, we find no evidence for inbreeding. We hypothesize that single paternity within a clutch may play an …

Pelvic Sexual Dimorphism In A Metatherian, Didelphis Virginiana: Implications For Eutherians, Robert G. Tague Nov 2003

Pelvic Sexual Dimorphism In A Metatherian, Didelphis Virginiana: Implications For Eutherians, Robert G. Tague

Faculty Publications

Eutherians give birth to relatively large infants. Females have larger pelves than males, though males typically have larger nonpelvic bones. Pelvic dimorphism is an adaptation for parturition. Metatherian females, who give birth to markedly small infants, should not show pelvic adaptations for parturition and should have smaller pelves than males. Adult females and males of the Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginiana, are compared. Males are significantly larger than females in absolute size for 14 of 16 pelvic and 8 nonpelvic measures. Sexes did not differ significantly for lower iliac length and posterior space of midplane. However, relative lengths for females are …

Measuring Constituency Ideology In U.S. House Districts: A Top-Down Simulation Approach, Phillip J. Ardoin, James C. Garand Nov 2003

Measuring Constituency Ideology In U.S. House Districts: A Top-Down Simulation Approach, Phillip J. Ardoin, James C. Garand

Faculty Publications

One of the most intractable problems associated with studying representation in the U.S. House of Representatives involves the measurement of district-level constituency opinion. In measuring constituency opinion in House districts, scholars have relied on a number of alternative approaches, including the use of demographic variables, small-sample estimates of public opinion, presidential election results, referenda data, and "bottom-up" simulated opinion. In this article we develop an innovative "top-down" simulation of House district opinion that provides more reliable and valid measures of House district ideology. We model state-level ideology (as measured by Erikson, Wright, and McIver 1993) as a function of various …

Similar Gene Structure Of Two Sox9a Genes And Their Expression Patterns During Gonadal Differentiation In A Teleost Fish, Rice Field Eel (Monopterus Albus), Rongjia Zhou, Li Liu, Yiqing Guo, Hongshi Yu, Hanhua Cheng, Xiao Huang, Terrence R. Tiersch, Philippe Berta Nov 2003

Similar Gene Structure Of Two Sox9a Genes And Their Expression Patterns During Gonadal Differentiation In A Teleost Fish, Rice Field Eel (Monopterus Albus), Rongjia Zhou, Li Liu, Yiqing Guo, Hongshi Yu, Hanhua Cheng, Xiao Huang, Terrence R. Tiersch, Philippe Berta

Faculty Publications

The Sox9 gene encodes a transcription factor that is critical for testis determination and chondrogenesis in vertebrates. Mutations in human SOX9 cause campomelic dysplasia, a dominant skeletal dysmorphology syndrome often associated with male to female sex reversal. Here we show that the Sox9a gene was duplicated during evolution of the rice field eel, Monopterus albus, a freshwater fish which undergoes natural sex reversal from female to male during its life, and has a haploid genome size (0.6-0.8 pg) that is among the smallest of the vertebrates. The duplicated copies of the gene (named Sox9a1 and Sox9a2) fit within the Sox9 …

The Implications Of The Curriculum Process On The Design Of A Modern Engineering Programme In The Dublin Institute Of Technology, Kevin Kelly Nov 2003

The Implications Of The Curriculum Process On The Design Of A Modern Engineering Programme In The Dublin Institute Of Technology, Kevin Kelly

Conference papers

In the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) the curriculum usually starts with a programme document. The programme document will be a snapshot of faculty thinking at a point in time, usually at the validation stage of the programme. The programme document lays down clearly the aims, objectives, facilities, staff, syllabi, learning/teaching methods, assessment procedures, programme-management arrangements and all of the other characteristics of the programme. It provides a basis for critical scrutiny by all involved. Compilation of the document is an iterative process, and the final document is scrutinised by an expert panel as part of the validation process.
