Benthic Biological Monitoring Program Of The Elizabeth River Watershed (2002), Daniel M. Dauer Nov 2003

Benthic Biological Monitoring Program Of The Elizabeth River Watershed (2002), Daniel M. Dauer

Elizabeth River Reports

Executive Summary

A study of the macrobenthic communities of the Elizabeth River watershed was initiated in summer 1999. This report presents the data from the fourth year of sampling in 2002. The three objectives of the Benthic Biological Monitoring Program of the Elizabeth River watershed are: (1) To characterize the health of the tidal waters of the Elizabeth River watershed as indicated by the structure of the benthic communities. ( 2) To conduct trend analyses on long-term data at 14 fixed-point stations to relate temporal trends in the benthic communities to changes in water and/or sediment quality. Trend analyses will …

Decreasing Barriers For Teens: Evaluation Of A New Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Strategy In School-Based Clinics, Abbey C. Sidebottom, Amanda Birnbaum, Sarah S. Nafstad Nov 2003

Decreasing Barriers For Teens: Evaluation Of A New Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Strategy In School-Based Clinics, Abbey C. Sidebottom, Amanda Birnbaum, Sarah S. Nafstad

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Sidebottom et al seek to evaluate the effects of the change in distribution systems on students' receipt of requested contraceptives and demand for contraceptive school-based clinics (SBC). The result of the study reveals that the average number of requests per student was higher under the voucher system, possibly as a consequence of expires vouchers resulting in repeated requests. The findings also suggest that SBCs could go a step further in reducing adolescents' barriers to accessing contraceptives by adopting an on-site direct delivery system..

Wing Shape In House Finches Differs Relative To Migratory Habit In Eastern And Western North America, Jeremy R. Egbert, James R. Belthoff Nov 2003

Wing Shape In House Finches Differs Relative To Migratory Habit In Eastern And Western North America, Jeremy R. Egbert, James R. Belthoff

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigated whether wing morphology differed between the sedentary House Finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) of western North America and the introduced population of eastern North America, as the latter has developed migratory behavior since its inception. Wing morphology differed between eastern and western House Finches. Eastern House Finches had shorter proximal primaries and a longer outer primary, perhaps reflecting a thinner and more pointed wing, although no disparity in wing length was detected. Since we interpret these differences in wing shape as modifications for flight capability, we believe that initial evidence for morphological divergence relative to migratory habit between eastern and …

These coalitions select participating families, and provide …

Do Asian Men Face Wage Discrimination In The United States?, Marlene Kim Nov 2003

Do Asian Men Face Wage Discrimination In The United States?, Marlene Kim

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Currently there is a debate regarding whether Asian men suffer from workplace discrimination on account of their race. The research findings have been mixed. Cabezas and Kawaguchi (1988) found that in the San Francisco Metropolitan Area, both foreign-born and U.S.-born men who were of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and Korean descent earned less than similarly qualified U.S.-born white men, although they did not examine the statistical significance of these findings. Using the same 1980 census data on a national sample of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Asian Indian, and Korean men, Duleep and Sanders (1992) find differences in earnings by race that are …

Plugged In Praxis: Critical Reflections On U.S. Feminism, Internet Activism, And Solidarity With Women In Afghanistan, Loretta Kensinger Nov 2003

Plugged In Praxis: Critical Reflections On U.S. Feminism, Internet Activism, And Solidarity With Women In Afghanistan, Loretta Kensinger

Journal of International Women's Studies

Cyber-space presents many contradictions to those seeking to use it for activist ends in a transnational world. This paper explores some of these contradictions by examining various uses of the internet in efforts to raise awareness about the situation for women in Afghanistan during the period the Taliban came to power and controlled a majority of the country. I explore differences in approaches, images, and tone within examples of internet activism, emphasizing the Web work of the Feminist Majority Foundation, set in comparison with that of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. Due to the prominence of the …

Housing Delivery In Nthutukoville, South Africa: Successes And Problems For Women, Catherine Ndinda Nov 2003

Housing Delivery In Nthutukoville, South Africa: Successes And Problems For Women, Catherine Ndinda

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines the notion of empowerment and what it entails in housing development. Through a critical analysis if the different phases in one particular housing project analyzed by the author, the paper highlights the areas of empowerment and emphasizes that it is a process, which in the case of Nthutukoville in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa began with securing land tenure. Access to resources and acquisition of skills are important. Both external and internal factors may be responsible for women’s inability to take charge of their lives. External factors include political violence, unsupportive local authorities, and a hostile environment as well …

Technology, Commentary And The Admonitions For Women, Sherin Wing Nov 2003

Technology, Commentary And The Admonitions For Women, Sherin Wing

Journal of International Women's Studies

The following is an analysis of the Admonitions for Women (Nu Jie) by the Later Han Dynasty scholar, Ban Zhao. It examines the historical context for its composition, applying not only one literary template, that of the instructional text, the technological treatise, but also Confucian Commentary. Through this process, the Admonitions emerges as a sophisticated philosophical tract that combines not only several literary traditions, but applies them to a new, unique audience: elite women. In so doing, Ban Zhao challenges assumptions of women’s roles, expectations of women, and enlightens her readers as to what might be really happening …

Keys To Women’S Liberation In Communist China: An Historical Overview, Jinghao Zhou Nov 2003

Keys To Women’S Liberation In Communist China: An Historical Overview, Jinghao Zhou

Journal of International Women's Studies

Has the Communist Party of China (CPC) fully liberated Chinese women? Is the leadership of the CPC the key to Chinese women’s liberation in the twenty-first century? The CPC has tried to convince the Chinese people and international society to believe that the answer is positive. Having examined the status of Chinese women from an historical perspective, the author has reached the conclusion that women’s problems in present-day China are not only serious but also structural. It is impossible for Chinese women to fully enjoy women’s rights within the current communist system. The future of women’s liberation largely depends on …

In Search Of Equality: Marriage Related Laws For Muslim Women In Bangladesh, Kamrul Hossain Nov 2003

In Search Of Equality: Marriage Related Laws For Muslim Women In Bangladesh, Kamrul Hossain

Journal of International Women's Studies

The problem of inequality for women in Bangladesh is more social than legal. As regards to the law, except for personal matters, inequalities in the provisions of law are hardly found. Personal matters, however, are regulated by religious laws or customs. In the legal system of Bangladesh though these laws or customs are incorporated separately under the head of Personal Law, these are not, however, as a whole derived from religious laws or customs. Some changes through introducing enactments or promulgating ordinances were made in their application. Still, these have been insufficient to establish equality between women and men. This …

A Critical Examination Of The Use Of Preliminary Tests In Two-Sample Tests Of Location, Kimberly T. Perry Nov 2003

A Critical Examination Of The Use Of Preliminary Tests In Two-Sample Tests Of Location, Kimberly T. Perry

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This paper explores the appropriateness of testing the equality of two means using either a t test, the Welch test, or the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test for two independent samples based on the results of using two classes of preliminary tests (i.e., tests for population variance equality and symmetry in underlying distributions).

Confidence Intervals For P(X Less Than Y) In The Exponential Case With Common Location Parameter, Ayman Baklizi Nov 2003

Confidence Intervals For P(X Less Than Y) In The Exponential Case With Common Location Parameter, Ayman Baklizi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The problem considered is interval estimation of the stress - strength reliability R = P(Xθ and λ respectively and a common location parameter μ . Several types of asymptotic, approximate and bootstrap intervals are investigated. Performances are investigated using simulation techniques and compared in terms of attainment of the nominal confidence level, symmetry of lower and upper error rates, and expected length. Recommendations concerning their usage are given.

Approximate Bayesian Confidence Intervals For The Variance Of A Gaussian Distribution, Vincent A. R. Camara Nov 2003

Approximate Bayesian Confidence Intervals For The Variance Of A Gaussian Distribution, Vincent A. R. Camara

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The aim of the present study is to obtain and compare confidence intervals for the variance of a Gaussian distribution. Considering respectively the square error and the Higgins-Tsokos loss functions, approximate Bayesian confidence intervals for the variance of a normal population are derived. Using normal data and SAS software, the obtained approximate Bayesian confidence intervals will then be compared to the ones obtained with the well known classical method. The Bayesian approach relies only on the observations. It is shown that the proposed approximate Bayesian approach relies only on the observations. The classical method, that uses the Chi-square statistic, does …

A Comparison Of Equivalence Testing In Combination With Hypothesis Testing And Effect Sizes, Christopher J. Mecklin Nov 2003

A Comparison Of Equivalence Testing In Combination With Hypothesis Testing And Effect Sizes, Christopher J. Mecklin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Equivalence testing, an alternative to testing for statistical significance, is little used in educational research. Equivalence testing is useful in situations where the researcher wishes to show that two means are not significantly different. A simulation study assessed the relationships between effect size, sample size, statistical significance, and statistical equivalence.

Dynamic Modeling Of The Ssdi Application Timing Decision: The Importance Of Policy Variables, Rickard V. Burkhauser, J S. Butler, Gulcin Gumus Nov 2003

Dynamic Modeling Of The Ssdi Application Timing Decision: The Importance Of Policy Variables, Rickard V. Burkhauser, J S. Butler, Gulcin Gumus

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper analyzes the importance of policy variables in the context of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application timing decision. Previously, we explicitly modeled the optimal timing of SSDI application using dynamic structural models. We estimated these models using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). This paper uses option value model estimates to simulate application timing under alternative SSDI policy formulations. We consider changes in three policy variables: benefit levels, acceptance rates, and employer accommodation. Our simulations suggest all these changes would have substantial effects on expected spell lengths until application and on lifetime application rates, and hence …
