Shellfish Outreach Project, Dyanna I. Smith
Shellfish Outreach Project, Dyanna I. Smith
PREP Reports & Publications
The purpose of the Shellfish Outreach project was to disseminate educational information to the greater seacoast community on the value of aquaculture, status and opportunities in shellfishing, and hands-on local conservation strategies in an exciting visual and experiential manner.
The entire project was designed to combine three primary methods of distributing information to the public: traveling programs, curriculum design, and field experience. Audiences for all three programs were to receive maps, updated shellfish-related information, and/or details promoting environmentally sound aquaculture practices. Subject matter covered during these programs was designed to focus on basic shellfish biology and natural history, the history …

An Assessment Of Cognitive And Sensorimotor Deficits Associated With Appsw And P301l Mouse Models Of Alzheimer's Disease, Marcos F. Garcia
An Assessment Of Cognitive And Sensorimotor Deficits Associated With Appsw And P301l Mouse Models Of Alzheimer's Disease, Marcos F. Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Behavioral characterization of animal models for Alzheimer's Disease is critical for the development of potential therapeutics and treatments against the disease. While there are several known animal models of AD, three current models--APPsw, P301L, and APPsw+P301L--have not been well characterized, if at all. This study, therefore, aimed to perform a full behavioral characterization of these three models in order to better understand the impairments associated with each one. Between 5 and 8.5 months of age, animals were behaviorally tested in a variety of sensorimotor, anxiety, and cognitive tasks. The number of tau+ neurons in the forebrains of P301L mice was …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
To date, several crop : weed competition models have been developed. Developers of the various models were invited to compare model performance using a common data set. The data set consisted of wheat and Lolium rigidum grown in monoculture and mixtures under dryland and irrigated conditions. Results from four crop : weed competition models are presented: ALMANAC, APSIM, CROPSIM and INTERCOM. For all models, deviations between observed and predicted values for monoculture wheat were only slightly lower than for wheat grown in competition with L. rigidum, even though the workshop participants had access to monoculture data while parameterizing models. …
A Machine Learning Approach To Anomaly Detection, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney, Muhammad H. Arshad
A Machine Learning Approach To Anomaly Detection, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney, Muhammad H. Arshad
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Much of the intrusion detection research focuses on signature (misuse) detection, where models are built to recognize known attacks. However, signature detection, by its nature, cannot detect novel attacks. Anomaly detection focuses on modeling the normal behavior and identifying significant deviations, which could be novel attacks. In this paper we explore two machine learning methods that can construct anomaly detection models from past behavior. The first method is a rule learning algorithm that characterizes normal behavior in the absence of labeled attack data. The second method uses a clustering algorithm to identify outliers.

Styles Of Pragmatism, Social Science And The Law, Robert P. Burns
Pragmatism, Law and Governmentality
I have long held as an ideal the words of one of foremost American interpreters of John Dewey's philosophy: "An adequate, comprehensive political and social theory must be at once empirical, interpretive, and critical." How these styles of social inquiry, whose practitioners often seem at war, might cohere has never been completely clear. This essay is an attempt to work out in a very limited context some of the issues surrounding these relationships. In particular, I want to explore the relationship between the interpretive style, which I take to be central, and the other two. The focus of these remarks …

Characterization Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Protein Ser/Thr Phosphatase T1 And Comparison To Its Mammalian Homolog Pp5., Jee-Yeong Jeong, Jeremiah Johns, Christopher Sinclair, Jung-Min Park, Sandra S. Rossie
Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Background
Protein Ser/Thr phosphatase 5 (PP5) and its Saccharomyces cerevisiae homolog protein phosphatase T1 (Ppt1p) each contain an N-terminal domain consisting of several tetratricopeptide repeats (TPRs) and a C-terminal catalytic domain that is related to the catalytic subunits of protein phosphatases 1 and 2A, and calcineurin. Analysis of yeast Ppt1p could provide important clues to the function of PP5 and its homologs, however it has not yet been characterized at the biochemical or cellular level.
Results
The specific activity of recombinant Ppt1p toward the artificial substrates 32P-myelin basic protein (MBP) and 32P-casein was similar to that of PP5. …
