Two Arabidopsis Circadian Oscillators Can Be Distinguished By Differential Temperature Sensitivity, Todd P. Michael, Patrice A. Salome, C. Robertson Mcclung Mar 2003

Two Arabidopsis Circadian Oscillators Can Be Distinguished By Differential Temperature Sensitivity, Todd P. Michael, Patrice A. Salome, C. Robertson Mcclung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Circadian rhythms are widespread in nature and reflect the activity of an endogenous biological clock. In metazoans, the circadian system includes a central circadian clock in the brain as well as distinct clocks in peripheral tissues such as the retina or liver. Similarly, plants have distinct clocks in different cell layers and tissues. Here, we show that two different circadian clocks, distinguishable by their sensitivity to environmental temperature signals, regulate the transcription of genes that are expressed in the Arabidopsis thaliana cotyledon. One oscillator, which regulates CAB2 expression, responds preferentially to light–dark versus temperature cycles and fails to respond to …

Influence Of A Cyclonic Eddy On Microheterotroph Biomass And Carbon Export In The Lee Of Hawaii, Robert R. Bidigare, Claudia R. Benitez-Nelson, Carrie L. Leonard, Paul D. Quay, Michael L. Parsons, David G. Foley, Michael P. Seki Mar 2003

Influence Of A Cyclonic Eddy On Microheterotroph Biomass And Carbon Export In The Lee Of Hawaii, Robert R. Bidigare, Claudia R. Benitez-Nelson, Carrie L. Leonard, Paul D. Quay, Michael L. Parsons, David G. Foley, Michael P. Seki

Faculty Publications

[1] A multi‐platform sampling strategy was used to investigate carbon cycling in a cold‐core eddy that formed in the lee of Hawaii during September 2000. Microheterotroph biomass and 234Th‐derived carbon export rates within the eddy were 2 to 3 times higher than those observed for adjacent waters. If this eddy is representative of other cyclonic eddies that are frequently formed in the lee of Hawaii, then eddy activity may significantly enhance the areal efficiency of the biological pump and facilitate the transfer of organic carbon to organisms inhabiting the mesopelagic and abyssal‐benthic zones of this subtropical ecosystem.

A Qualitative Study To Analyze The Effectiveness Of A Researcher Designed Tool In Documenting Outcomes Of Caring Encounters, Both Individually And Over Time, Karen S. Ackerman

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Research into the documentation of quality-of-care outcomes is pivotal to developing nursing theory, increasing the knowledge base of nursing, and highlighting nursing accomplishments. This thesis presents a researcher-designed, agency-specific tool as one way of describing and documenting the outcomes of caring encounters. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of a researcher-designed tool in documenting the outcomes of caring encounters both individually and over time. Method: A descriptive research design was used to study the implementation of the tool. Watson's Theory of Human Caring served as the synthesizing framework. Results: Outcome tools applied to 34 …
