An Analysis Of Materials Suitable For Use As A Pitfall Trap In A Desert Environment, R. Renee Brown

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to identify a type of pitfall trap container that can withstand the temperature extremes of the Mojave Desert in which the terrestrial, or above ground, drift fence with pitfall traps will be utilized for trapping reptiles. A pitfall trap is a container, such as a plastic bucket with a plastic lid, that is buried in the ground up to the lip of the bucket and used to catch small ground dwelling fauna that fall into the trap. Many different pitfall trap materials have been utilized in the trapping of small ground-dwelling fauna. Plastic has …

Perfect Substitutes Or The Real Thing?, Naomi Cahn Apr 2003

Perfect Substitutes Or The Real Thing?, Naomi Cahn

Duke Law Journal

This Article traces the development of adoption law using recent scholarship in history and sociology, as well as nineteenth century legal sources. The early history of American adoption provides a novel and useful context to analyze the complicated relationships between "traditional" and "alternative" family forms. The Article discusses how judicial interpretations of the meaning of adoption were cabined by the traditional significance of blood relationships, and examines the treatment of adopted and biological children in three contexts: parental consent to adoption, inheritance, and the civil and criminal laws governing incest. The Article argues that the challenge today, as was true …

Is It Safe To Reuse Single-Use Catheter For Diagnostic And Therapeutic Electro- Physiological Procedures?, Hung-Fat Tse, Kathy Lai-Fun Lee, Raymond Hon-Wah Chan, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Clinical cardiac electrophysiological (EP) procedures have been increasingly used for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. During the procedure, 3-6 cardiac catheters, which incorporate platinum electrodes are used to record electrical signals or pace the heart. These EP catheters are solid nonluminal designs without any hollow inner core. Some special EP catheters have deflection mechanisms used to deflect the tip to help guide the catheter to a specific target for mapping and/or delivering radiofrequency energy for curative ablation procedure. The early experience showed that EP catheters were quite durable and could be sterilized for reuse, as has been the …

California Transportation Security Summits, Mti Report S-01-04, Mti

Mineta Transportation Institute

In the aftermath of September 11, it became undeniably clear that terrorists target civil transport systems and are willing to use transport systems as weapons of mass destruction as well as targets. In response to this threat, America ’s transportation community must adopt more effective measures to insure the safety of the millions of passengers and employees who use or work in transit facilities every day. To meet this heightened responsibility, leaders of the transportation community need high-quality information and appropriate policy guidance. To help meet this need, the Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI)—a leader in transportation terrorism research since the …

From "The Ten Commandments" To The Decalogue, John M. Grondelski Apr 2003

From "The Ten Commandments" To The Decalogue, John M. Grondelski

Journal of Religion & Film

Krzyszstof Kielowski's Decalogue, only recently released in North America, raises universal questions about faith and moral values through consideration of each of the Ten Commandments. The ten films transcend politics to plumb basic moral values, depicted in the daily lives of the dwellers in a Warsaw apartment house complex. Kielowski's films examine the moral dimension of human relations with God and with their fellow human beings.

The Unholy Biblical Subtexts And Other Religious Elements Built Into Superman: The Movie (1978) And Superman Ii (1981), Anton K. Kozlovic Apr 2003

The Unholy Biblical Subtexts And Other Religious Elements Built Into Superman: The Movie (1978) And Superman Ii (1981), Anton K. Kozlovic

Journal of Religion & Film

The sacred-secular parallels between Jesus Christ and Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman in Superman: The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1981) were explicated previously in the Journal of Religion & Film. This research was followed by the identification of additional holy, but non-christic subtexts built into the films to complement Superman as a Christ-figure. However, the sacred-secular parallels did not stop there. In addition to this persuasive array of positive holy figurations, complementary unholy religious subtexts were also built into the films. They were designed to counterpoint the alien Messiah and his positive pals, plus accentuate the evilness of the unholy Kryptonian …

The Effects Of Intense Submicrosecond Electrical Pulses On Cells, Jingdong Deng, Karl H. Schoenbach, E. Stephen Buescher, Pamela S. Hair, Paula M. Fox, Stephen J. Beebe Apr 2003

The Effects Of Intense Submicrosecond Electrical Pulses On Cells, Jingdong Deng, Karl H. Schoenbach, E. Stephen Buescher, Pamela S. Hair, Paula M. Fox, Stephen J. Beebe

Bioelectrics Publications

A simple electrical model for living cells predicts an increasing probability for electric field interactions with intracellular substructures of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells when the electric pulse duration is reduced into the submicrosecond range. The validity of this hypothesis was verified experimentally by applying electrical pulses (durations 100 μs– 60 ns, electric field intensities 3–150 kV/cm) to Jurkat cells suspended in physiologic buffer containing propidium iodide. Effects on Jurkat cells were assessed by means of temporally resolved fluorescence and light microscopy. For the longest applied pulses, immediate uptake of propidium iodide occurred consistent with electroporation as the cause of …

Coherent Backscattering Of Light From An Ultra Cold Gas Of Rubidium-85 Atoms, Pasad B. Kulatunga Apr 2003

Coherent Backscattering Of Light From An Ultra Cold Gas Of Rubidium-85 Atoms, Pasad B. Kulatunga

Physics Theses & Dissertations

This thesis reports on the experimental study of coherent radiative transport in an ultracold gas of 85Rb atoms confined in a magneto-optic trap. Measurements are made of the polarization dependence of the spatial and spectral profile of light backscattered from the sample. The results shows an interferometric enhancement sensitive to coherent multiple scattering in the atomic gas, and strong variations with the polarization of the incident and detected light. Effects due to coherent enhancement of weak non-resonant transitions are also observed. Comparison of the measurements with realistic quantum Monte Carlo simulations of Kupriyanov, et al [1] yield very good …

The Quantitative Assessment Of Osteoinductivity Of Human Demineralized Bone Matrix And Cdna Array Analysis Of Osteogenic Differentiation In Human Periosteal Cells, Sittisak Honsawek Apr 2003

The Quantitative Assessment Of Osteoinductivity Of Human Demineralized Bone Matrix And Cdna Array Analysis Of Osteogenic Differentiation In Human Periosteal Cells, Sittisak Honsawek

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) has been extensively utilized in orthopeadic, periodontal, and maxillofacial applications. DBM comprises bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) that are essential regulators for endochondral bone formation. The current study was undertaken to establish the quantitative in vitro assays for determining the osteoinductive potential of human DBM and the use of cDNA gene expression array technology for examining gene expression profiles during osteoblast differentiation in human periosteal cells.

BMP-4 is one of the most osteoinductive factors and has been investigated for clinical applications. For this reason, BMP-4 was designated as the osteoinductive protein for use in the quantitative in …

The Ecological Ramifications Of Disease And Density In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Donald C. Behringer Jr. Apr 2003

The Ecological Ramifications Of Disease And Density In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Donald C. Behringer Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

In 1999, I discovered the first virus known to be pathogenic to any species of lobster. HLV-PA is a pathogenic herpes-like virus that infects juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, in the waters off south Florida (USA), and it alters the behavior and ecology of this species in fundamental ways. Gross signs of HLV-PA infection are lethargy, morbidity, cessation of molting, and discolored, “milky” hemolymph that does not clot. HLV-PA infects the hemocytes of host lobsters, specifically the hyalinocytes and semi-granulocytes, but not the granulocytes. When hemolymph from infected donors was injected into healthy juvenile lobsters, 90% of the …

Hybridization Between The Watersnakes Nerodia Sipedon And Nerodia Fasciata, In The Carolinas: A Morphological And Molecular Approach, Konrad Mebert Apr 2003

Hybridization Between The Watersnakes Nerodia Sipedon And Nerodia Fasciata, In The Carolinas: A Morphological And Molecular Approach, Konrad Mebert

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A few traditionally applied diagnostic characters of color pattern were compared with an additional set of morphological and genetic characters to evaluate differences between Nerodia sipedon and N. fasciata and to study the dynamics across their hybrid zone in the Carolinas. Many of the morphological characters exhibited significant interspecific differences, although only the number of dorsally complete crossbands (CBa) was diagnostic by itself. A discriminant function analysis of morphological characters was successful in separating both taxa. Species-specific nuclear markers, identified by the AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) technique were nearly fixed and served as diagnostic markers. They revealed extensive introgression …

Microreactor System With Immobilized Enzyme On Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms) Polymers, Zonghuan Lu Mar 2003

Microreactor System With Immobilized Enzyme On Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms) Polymers, Zonghuan Lu

Doctoral Dissertations

Microsystems, specifically microreactors, open the gate to new, improved analytical techniques while offering many advantages for a large number of applications in chemical engineering, pharmacy, medicine, and biotechnology. This study explored the feasibility of fabrication of microreactors using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a support for enzyme immobilization. Urease enzyme was used for catalyzing the conversion of urea to ammonia.

PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) is a silicone-based elastomeric polymer. Traditional micromanufacturing technology was employed for reactor mold fabrication. The mold was fabricated based on photolithography techniques, and SU-8 photoresist was used to construct reactor structure templates. The resulting silicon-wafer based reactor molds were then …
