Paper Session Ii-A - Looking Backward/Looking Forward: Space Flight At The Turn Of The New Millennium, Roger D. Launius
Space Congress® Proceedings
On March 16, 1926, seventy-six years ago, a reclusive Robert H. Goddard launched the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket at Auburn, Massachusetts, which traveled 43 feet in 2½ seconds. This event could appropriately be characterized as the “Kitty Hawk” of space exploration and the beginning of what would eventually become one of the most significant endeavors of the twentieth century. In the space allotted for this article, I shall survey fifty years of space exploration, reviewing the major programs of human and robotic exploration from the first efforts to reach space in 1957-1958 through the enormously successful spaceflight programs of the …

Naturally Occurring Heat Shock (HS) during Pupation Induces Abnormal Wing Development in Drosophila; We Examined Factors Affecting the Severity of This Induction. the Proportion of HS-Surviving Adults with Abnormal Wings Varied with HS Duration and Intensity, and with the Pupal Age or Stage at HS Administration. Pretreatment (PT), Mild Hyperthermia Delivered Before HS, Usually Protected Development Against HS. Gradual Heating Resembling Natural Thermal Regimes Also Protected Wing Development Against Thermal Disruption. Because of the Roles of the Wings in Flight and Courtship and in View of Natural Thermal Regimes that Drosophila Experience, Both HS-Induction of Wing Abnormalities and its Abatement …

Single Versus Multiple Drug Focus In Substance Abuse Clinical Trials Research, Nancy M. Petry
Single Versus Multiple Drug Focus In Substance Abuse Clinical Trials Research, Nancy M. Petry
UCHC Articles - Research
Complex patterns of multiple substance use pose clinical and methodological challenges for substance abuse clinical trials research. To increase measurement precision and internal validity, the modal approach has been to target both treatment interventions and outcome assessment to a single class of abused substance. This strategy warrants reconsideration because it entails limitations in recruitment feasibility and generalization of study findings. This report reviews pros and cons of single versus multiple targeted drugs, suggests guidelines for choosing between these strategies and outlines methods for broadening the scope of substance abuse clinical trails to take abuse of multiple substances into account. We …

An Analysis Of Preparedness And Qualifications Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities' Accounting Gradautes [!] Employed In Corporate America, Brandy Alexander
An Analysis Of Preparedness And Qualifications Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities' Accounting Gradautes [!] Employed In Corporate America, Brandy Alexander
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Historically black colleges and universities have been accused of not producing a quality education to accountants entering Corporate America. Attributes corporate recruiters look for in employment candidates include leadership, communication, and technical abilities. There has also been continuous concern if corporations are willingly hiring HBCD graduates because of qualifications or just filling the affirmative action quota. In order to determine the preparation and qualification HBCD's provided their accounting graduates, I designed a survey targeting accounting graduates of predominately black populated institutions currently employed in the corporate world . Fifty-two accountants representing twenty-one corporations and eleven HBCDs participated in the survey …
An Analysis Of Psychopathy Characteristics In A Non-Incarcerated Population, Ebony D. Hunter
An Analysis Of Psychopathy Characteristics In A Non-Incarcerated Population, Ebony D. Hunter
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
Psychopathy has received increased recognition as a critical clinical construct for evaluation and management of troubled individuals. To date, clinical research has examined psychopathy simply as a global construct rather than focusing on its specific criteria. In addition, researchers have tended to utilize downward extensions of adult, incarcerated conceptualization to understand general populations. Research pertaining to non-incarcerated diverse populations is scarce. This study is designed to assist in evaluation of personality traits related to psychopathy in a general, non-institutionalized population showing that there are selective psychopath characteristics present in non-incarcerated population.
Analysis Of The Effects Of Hypogeal And Epigeal Emergence On Seedling Competition In Legumes, Keith E. King
Analysis Of The Effects Of Hypogeal And Epigeal Emergence On Seedling Competition In Legumes, Keith E. King
McCabe Thesis Collection
Seedling emergence is either hypogeal or epigeal. In hypogeal emergence the cotyledons remain below the soil surface during seedling development, while in epigeal emergence the cotyledons extend above the soil surface due to elongation of the hypocotyl. Here we examine the effect of seed size, and emergence type, on seedling growth. Six legumes with variation in seed size and either epigeal or hypogeal emergence were grown under dark and light conditions. A competition study was also conducted where a hypogeal and epigeal legume were grown in combination with wheat and ryegrass. Legumes expressing epigeal emergence were cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), mung …
Photodynamic Therapy, Ashley Thomas
Photodynamic Therapy, Ashley Thomas
McCabe Thesis Collection
Photodynamic therapy is a new treatment that is being introduced into the veterinary community. Photodynamic therapy is the use of light activated chemotherapy to kill cancer cells (Dougherty, 1998). It has already been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to be used as a form of cancer treatment in humans, but has not been carried over to the veterinary community. That is until now. Photodynamic therapy is now being tested in the veterinary community in hopes to find the same results that the human medical community has when dealing with certain types of cancer. They also hope to …
Forage Restrictions For Small Grain Herbicides, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke
Forage Restrictions For Small Grain Herbicides, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Small grain crop s are sometimes harvest for livestock forage; either as part of a planned program or as a supplemental or emergency forage source. Several cereal herbicides have restrictions on crop use for forage. Residue data is lacking for some, especially for products used on crops intended for grain harvest. For these herbicides, it appears to be more an issue of lacking data rather than toxicity concern. For other, forage use is not restricted or the interval since application is sufficiently short to allow forage use. Recommendations for any use of treated crops are based on EPA label approval …
Nitrate Toxicity From Weeds, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke
Nitrate Toxicity From Weeds, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Weeds as well as certain crop plants may accumulate higher level of nitrates. Under drought conditions livestock may graze week plants that normally would be avoided. Frequently, weeds like kochia, pigweed, or lamsquarters may be a significant part of forage harvested where precipitation has limited normal forage production. Some weeds are harvested for emergency forage; i.e., kochia has acceptable feed value if harvested early and properly handled. However, frequently weeds in these situations are considerably too mature, unpalatable, and often difficult to cure properly.
