Host Defense Mechanisms In The Crayfish: The Effect Of Injection With Live Or Killed Bacteria., Kimberly R. Goins May 2003

Host Defense Mechanisms In The Crayfish: The Effect Of Injection With Live Or Killed Bacteria., Kimberly R. Goins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An increase in attachment of SRBCs to Procambarus clarkii hemocytes has been shown after the crayfish were injected with a live or killed Pseudomonas strain RS2b. The increase in attachment occurred at 8 hours post injection and peaked at 24 hours for both experimental groups. The population of hemocytes with receptors for LPS and mannose also increased at 8 hours post injection and peaked at 24 hours for both experimental groups. At 96 hours post injection the number of receptor bearing hemocytes and hemocytes bound to SRBCs began to decrease to the level of the control for both groups. The …

Collaboration Between Art Teachers And School Counselors Of The Johnson City Elementary Schools To Assist At-Risk Students: An Art Experiences Model., Caroline Dover Jackson May 2003

Collaboration Between Art Teachers And School Counselors Of The Johnson City Elementary Schools To Assist At-Risk Students: An Art Experiences Model., Caroline Dover Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Art has been used for centuries as a healing tool for adults and children; however, the use of art therapy in schools is a recent development. Art therapy, encompassing art, psychology, and therapy, is by nature interdisciplinary. Art experiences provided to students at risk of failing or dropping out of school may offer non-verbal communication that can be used effectively to satisfy a variety of developmental, social, or emotional needs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop a curriculum-based art experiences model, combining the skills of art teachers and school counselors. Data were collected through a focus group …

For Richer For Poorer, In Debt Do Us Part? Debt Brought Into Marriage And Its Effect On Marital Quality, Michelle Mason May 2003

For Richer For Poorer, In Debt Do Us Part? Debt Brought Into Marriage And Its Effect On Marital Quality, Michelle Mason

Student Work

This study examines the impact of personal debt accumulated before marriage upon marital quality for individuals. Attention from popular media points to the need for further systematic investigation. This study strives to fill this void in academic research. I use the National Survey of Families and Households to conduct a longitudinal analysis of the effect of debt on marital quality for 433 respondents who were single in 1987-1988 (Wave I), and who were married in 1992-1994 (Wave II). Ordinary Least Squares regression was used to test several hypotheses. Social exchange theory provides theoretical guidance for the analysis. Exchange theory focuses …

Perceptions Of Seventh- And Eighth-Grade Girls Toward Coeducational Physical Education Classes In Five Middle Schools In East Tennessee., Shannon Clabo Sullivan May 2003

Perceptions Of Seventh- And Eighth-Grade Girls Toward Coeducational Physical Education Classes In Five Middle Schools In East Tennessee., Shannon Clabo Sullivan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the participation, perceptions, and preferences of seventh- and eighth-grade girls in coeducational and gender-separated physical education classes in five schools in East Tennessee. The participants in this study were seventh- and eighth-grade girls attending public schools in two East Tennessee counties. Participants completed a questionnaire pertaining to their physical education classes. Although 465 students were invited to participate in this study, only 241 students returned the permission form. This resulted in a 50% response rate. The findings were descriptive in nature, although basic analyses were calculated to identify any relationships among the …

Parameter Estimation For A Modified Cable Model Using A Green's Function And Eigenvalue Perturbation., Scott Lewis La Voie May 2003

Parameter Estimation For A Modified Cable Model Using A Green's Function And Eigenvalue Perturbation., Scott Lewis La Voie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we developed the Green's Function for a tapered equivalent cylinder model of dendritic electrical propagation. We then use the Green's Function to develop a Carleman linear embedding scheme which is used to estimate the effects of a nonlinear ion channel hot-spot on the tapered cylinder solution. Mathematica© was used to implement the Carleman embedding scheme.

Kinetic And Spectroscopic Characterization Of The H178a Methionyl Aminopeptidase From Escherichia Coli, Alicja J. Copik, Sabina I. Swierczek, W. Todd Lowther, Ventris M. D'Souza, Brian W. Matthews, Richard C. Holz May 2003

Kinetic And Spectroscopic Characterization Of The H178a Methionyl Aminopeptidase From Escherichia Coli, Alicja J. Copik, Sabina I. Swierczek, W. Todd Lowther, Ventris M. D'Souza, Brian W. Matthews, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

To gain insight into the role of the strictly conserved histidine residue, H178, in the reaction mechanism of the methionyl aminopeptidase from Escherichia coli (EcMetAP-I), the H178A mutant enzyme was prepared. Metal-reconstituted H178A binds only one equivalent of Co(II) or Fe(II) tightly with affinities that are identical to the WT enzyme based on kinetic and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) data. Electronic absorption spectra of Co(II)-loaded H178A EcMetAP-I indicate that the active site divalent metal ion is pentacoordinate, identical to the WT enzyme. These data indicate that the metal binding site has not been affected by altering H178. …

Nicotine Modulates The Expression Of A Diverse Set Of Genes In The Neuronal Sh-Sy5y Cell Line, Travis Dunckley, Ronald J. Lukas May 2003

Nicotine Modulates The Expression Of A Diverse Set Of Genes In The Neuronal Sh-Sy5y Cell Line, Travis Dunckley, Ronald J. Lukas

Translational Neuroscience

Nicotine exposure can have long lasting effects on nervous system function, some of which must contribute to nicotine dependence. Up-regulation, an increase in numbers of radioligand-binding nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR), occurs on exposure to nicotine at high concentrations. To determine whether altered gene expression might account for long term changes and up-regulation following nicotine exposure, we assessed effects of 1 h of 1 mM nicotine exposure on alter. ation of gene expression in the neuron-like SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma clonal line. Repeat and cross-controlled microarray analyses yielded a list of 17 genes from the initially screened ∼5,000 whose expression was consistently altered …
