Self-Esteem Levels Of Adolescents With Learning Disabilities Or Mental Retardation In Inclusive Or Non-Inclusive Educational Settings, Kay L. Delp
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation compared the global, personal, and social self-esteem levels of adolescents with learning disabilities or mild-to-moderate mental retardation. The purpose was to determine differences between the adolescents based on their disability, educational setting of inclusion or non-inclusion, and by gender. The sample of this study included nine females and 22 males between the ages of 13 and 21 years who lived in southern New Jersey.
Students were given the Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventories-Third Edition, a 67 item self-report, norm-referenced instrument. Mean scores for each group were compared and analyzed by using a one-way ANOVA, a two-way ANOVA, and descriptive …
Energetic Baroclinic Super-Tidal Oscillations On The Southeast Florida Shelf, Alexander Soloviev, Mark E. Luther, Robert H. Weisberg
Energetic Baroclinic Super-Tidal Oscillations On The Southeast Florida Shelf, Alexander Soloviev, Mark E. Luther, Robert H. Weisberg
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Historical and recent data reveal a very energetic regime on the shelf off southeast Florida. In addition to spin off eddies, large-amplitude tidal velocity fluctuations with amplitudes exceeding 0.5 ms−1 are observed. Recent exploratory measurements conducted as a part of the South Florida Ocean Measurement Center (SFOMC) show that the time scale of these oscillations is about 10 hrs. This period does not coincide either with the inertial period (27 Hrs) or with the semidiurnal M2 (12.42 hrs) or S2 (12 hrs) tidal constituents. In addition, these internal oscillations appear to be modulated seasonally. A possible explanation …

A Preliminary Analysis: Children Aged Birth To Two With Asd And The Early Intervention Methodologies Of Aba, Pecs, And Floor-Time, Erin L. Boyle
Theses and Dissertations
The archival data regarding 20 children who received early intervention services from a child development center in southern New Jersey were reviewed. Each child in the study was aged 0 to 2 years, had a disorder of the autistic spectrum, and was provided treatment in the form of ABA, PECS, floor-time, or a combination of interventions. Because research on ASD and its treatment has not yet focused on children under the age of 3, the purpose of this study was to investigate which methodology of intervention is most feasible for such young children. Additional aims of the study were to …

A Link Between Handedness, Gender, Socioeconomics, Race, And Parental Involvement And Learning Disabilities, Heather Reiss
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine if there was a link between handedness, gender, socioeconomics, race, and parental involvement and learning disabilities. The records from a local school where reviewed and compared to the national records. When comparing the local and national records, the school was found to be close in percentage for gender and handedness. The school, however; had a much higher percentage for African Americans and a much higher percentage for free and reduced lunch services than did the national records.

The Social Construction Of Academic Success Of Learning Disabled College Students, Robin D. Waltman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the challenges faced by college students with learning disabilities from their own perspective. Interviews were conducted with four first-year students with learning disabilities and five sophomore, junior, and senior students with learning disabilities. The subjects attended Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. The subjects were varied in race, socioeconomic backgrounds, and majors. They all attended college full-time. Qualitative data analysis was performed in order to construct thematic categories from recurring patterns. It was found that college students with learning disabilities have difficulties in college that are unique. They not only have academic …

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase, with or without a substrate bound in the active site.
An Investigation Of The Effects Grade Retention Has On Students' Academic Performance, Tyree Gunter
An Investigation Of The Effects Grade Retention Has On Students' Academic Performance, Tyree Gunter
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to examine if grade retention has a positive effect on a child's academic performance, and if females, whether retained or not, improved more academically than males. Language/literacy and mathematics cumulative grades of 58 students in the second and third grade were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results indicated that students who were retained improved more in academic performance than students who were low-achievers but promoted instead and those placed in a transition class. In addition the findings showed that males, whether retained or not, had higher mathematical scores than females, but there was …

Relationship Of Family Involvement And Functioning Among Mentally Ill Adults, Sharon A. Sabatino
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of the present study were to find a relationship between family/caregiver involvement in treatment of mentally ill adults that they care for and clients' overall Axis IV and V assessments. Support and education groups were held at Family Service in New Jersey over a six-month period. The population (n=12) came from the Hattie Tallie program at Family Service. These clients and their family members/social supports and caregivers attended meetings for six months to gain education and to support each other in dealing with clients' treatment. Global Assessment of Functioning scores (Axis V) and Severity of stressors (Axis IV) …

An Anesthesia Display For A Space Station: Clinical Validation Of Neuromuscular Blockade Models, Rose Mills, Steve Kern
An Anesthesia Display For A Space Station: Clinical Validation Of Neuromuscular Blockade Models, Rose Mills, Steve Kern
Utah Space Grant Consortium
An anesthesia drug display that shows the predicted effects of medication may be extremely useful on a space station and in situations where an inexperienced person could be performing experiments on animals or emergency treatments to fellow astronauts. Such a drug display shows drugs given and predicts their effects on the person or animal. In order for such a display to be useful, the predictions must be validated to ensure accuracy of and instill confidence in those who use the display. This study consists of validation of rocuronium which is a drug used for neuromuscular blockade (muscle relaxation). The effects …

Optimization Of Wastewater Design Using Genetic Algorithms, David S. Stanfield, Brent Borup
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Recently, at Brigham Young University, graduate students in the Environmental Engineering Laboratory have been exploring the possibility of using Genetic Algorithms for the optimization of wastewater treatment design. This research applies the IA WRC ASM no. 1 model for solving a four-stage Bardenpho process system using a tournament style selection genetic algorithm. The mathematical model was solved in Maple, and programmed in C++ using a Gauss-Seidel iterative method. Final results will be available in June 2003.

Politian: A Critical Analysis, Jessica A. Martin
Politian: A Critical Analysis, Jessica A. Martin
Senior Scholar Papers
Why even look at Politian, an unfinished failure? While it is true that Politian was a failure for its time and surely one of Poe's least successful attempts, it may improve on a stage with a more modern perspective. If not solely for examination of Poe's artistic effort, Politian also warrants a closer read due to its historical relevance by way of Beauchamp and Sharp. Poe, a most fastidious editor of his work, was ultimately required because of financial constraints to lay aside Politian in its unfinished state. As a result, the unedited Politian may provide insight into the writing …
