Non Paraneoplastic Opsoclonus - Myoclonus Syndrome, Radwan M. Zaidan, Mustafa A. Salih, Abdulkader M. Daif, Abdulrahman Y. Al-Tahan Jan 2003

Non Paraneoplastic Opsoclonus - Myoclonus Syndrome, Radwan M. Zaidan, Mustafa A. Salih, Abdulkader M. Daif, Abdulrahman Y. Al-Tahan

Neurosciences

We analyzed the features of opsoclonus syndrome as a manifestation of post viral encephalopathy in 3 patients (one child and 2 adults). This is the first report of opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome in the Arabian Peninsula. Symptoms appeared a few days after a viral-like illness in all patients. We excluded the possibility of paraneoplastic syndrome as investigations were carried out and follow-up did not reveal malignancy. One patient received a relatively long duration steroid treatment, another one received steroids in pulsed therapy, the third did not receive any specific treatment. The outcome was very good with improvement except in one who had …

The Limitations Of Limited Liability: Lessons For Entrepreneurs (And Their Attorneys), John H. Matheson Jan 2003

The Limitations Of Limited Liability: Lessons For Entrepreneurs (And Their Attorneys), John H. Matheson

Articles

An entrepreneur does not start a new business expecting it to fail. Yet, according to various statistics, most independent start-up businesses fail within the first year, while as many as 90% are no longer in business after three years. This is why the issue of personal liability for the owners of the business is critical. Historically, the entrepreneur could protect personal assets by forming and operating the business as a corporation, recognized by state law as a legal entity separate from the owner of the business for purposes of imposing liability. Although operating a business as a corporation presumptively shields …

The Economists' New Arguments, Brett Mcdonnell

Articles

Adam and Max, two law professors and longtime friends, have just run into each other at an Association of American Law Schools (AALS) meeting. Adam has long been a zealous partisan of the law and economics approach to legal analysis. Max, though he has some training in economics, is more skeptical about that approach. The two old friends have discussed various aspects of this subject over the years, and in this meeting they renew their discussion. The topic this time: Fairness Versus Welfare, 1 the new book (formerly a mammoth article in the Harvard Law Review) 2 by two leading …

State Interest And Marriage--The Theoretical Perspective, Brian H. Bix Jan 2003

State Interest And Marriage--The Theoretical Perspective, Brian H. Bix

Articles

By the conference description, we are to consider "the relationship of marriage and self-government." 2 It is hard to analyze the relationship of these two, because they are "moving targets." Everyone thinks they know what is meant by "marriage," but as the debate ensues about the extension (e.g., to same-sex couples) and modification (e.g., for covenant marriage rules) of marriage, and our social norms about the roles of parents (married or not) and spouses change, one might wonder how much is certain and agreed upon and how much is fluid and up for review and revision. 3

Teaching Adr In The Workplace Once And Again: A Pedagogical History, Laura J. Cooper Jan 2003

Teaching Adr In The Workplace Once And Again: A Pedagogical History, Laura J. Cooper

Articles

During the summer there was a conference in Ann Arbor, sponsored by the Association of American Law Schools, to address whether law schools could better prepare students to represent the interests of employees and employ- ers. The conference planners took care to include as participants notjust law school teachers, but also practitioners who could more accurately describe the role of attorneys in representing worker and employer interests and how students could best be educated to serve those roles. Conference participants concluded that current law school courses were inappropriately focused on the adversarial role of lawyers in litigation. They decided that …

Competence, Culpability, And Punishment: Implications Of Atkins For Executing And Sentencing Adolescents, Barry C. Feld Jan 2003

Competence, Culpability, And Punishment: Implications Of Atkins For Executing And Sentencing Adolescents, Barry C. Feld

Articles

The Supreme Court has explored the issues of culpability, proportionality, and deserved punishment most fully in the context of capital punishment. In death penalty decisions addressing developmental impairments and culpability, the Court has considered the cases of defendants with mental retardation and older adolescents, and has created an anomalous inconsistency by reaching opposite conclusions about the deserved punishment for each group of defendants. Recently, in Atkins v. Virginia, the Court relied on both empirical and normative justifications to categorically prohibit states from executing defendants with mental retardation. Atkins reasoned that mentally retarded offenders lacked the reasoning, judgment, and impulse control …

The Awareness Of Social Nudism In Modern Society, Joyce R. Casto Jan 2003

The Awareness Of Social Nudism In Modern Society, Joyce R. Casto

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In the United States, there currently exists varying perceptions about Social Nudism. Some consider it a form of expression, while others find the behavior deviant or out of the norm and immoral. My paper focuses on a specific group known as the Naturists, the present day term for Nudists, a social culture that engages in complete nudity in a community setting. I chose this topic in an effort to increase awareness of this culture and to expel some of the misconceptions which have existed for many years. I have always been curious about this lifestyle so when the opportunity arose …

Am I Too Fat? Bulimia As An Epidemic, Christopher Kribs, Beverly Gonzalez, Emilia Huerta-Sanchez, Angela Ortiz-Nieves, Terannie Vazquez-Alvarez

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

For at least the past ten years, eating disorders have had a major impact in the physical and mental health of women, particularly young women. Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are closely linked eating disorders. Anorexia often precedes bulimia. However, there are about 2 million women in college that have been exclusively bulimic. In this article, we focus on the role of college-peer pressure on the dynamics of anorexia-free bulimia. The model looks at bulimia as a progressive disease and explores the impact of intervention (treatment) at two stages of disease progression. The impact of relapse (a common occurrence among bulimics) …

Military Transformation And The Defense Industry After Next, Peter J. Dombrowski, Eugene Gholz, Andrew L. Ross

Newport Papers

Though still adjusting to the end of the Cold War, the defense industry is now confronted with the prospect of military transformation. Since the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, many firms have seen business improve in response to the subsequent large increase in the defense budget. But in the longer run, the defense sector's military customers intend to reinvent themselves for a future that may require the acquisition of unfamiliar weapons and support systems.

Language Basis Of Reading Disabilities And Implications For Early Identification And Remediation, Hugh W. Catts, Tiffany Hogan Jan 2003

Language Basis Of Reading Disabilities And Implications For Early Identification And Remediation, Hugh W. Catts, Tiffany Hogan

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a brief overview of the language basis of reading and reading disabilities. First, we describe the “Simple View of Reading,” a model of reading that comprises two primary components, word recognition and language comprehension. We then review research showing that language problems underlie most difficulties children have learning to read. Lastly, we discuss implications of these findings for early identification and remediation of reading disabilities.

Beyond Words: An Empirical Study Of Context In Contract Creation, Deborah A. Schmedemann Jan 2003

Beyond Words: An Empirical Study Of Context In Contract Creation, Deborah A. Schmedemann

Faculty Scholarship

This article reports on an empirical study into how judges interpret contracts. In general, the study demonstrates that key participants do look to context for guidance on issues of contract creation. Part II summarizes the modem legal perspective on these questions, as stated in the Restatement (Second) of Contracts, as posited in the scholarly debate about relational contracts, and as exemplified in case law regarding employment contracts. Part III describes a study designed to capture the thinking on these questions of participants in an employment contract. Part IV presents the results obtained from respondents who represented the parties to the …

Proposal For A New Executive Order On Assassination, Jeffrey F. Addicott Jan 2003

Proposal For A New Executive Order On Assassination, Jeffrey F. Addicott

Faculty Articles

Both clarity and respect for the rule of law demands that a new executive order on assassination be enacted that properly defines the term “assassination” and is couched in the legal parameters of self-defense. In prosecuting the War on Terror, the United States has confronted myriad issues concerning how best to deal with the new threat of al-Qaida-styled terrorism and those rogue nations that support terrorism. The two principle documents associated with these concerns are the National Security Strategy of the United States of America ("National Security Strategy") released by the White House on September 17, 2002 and Executive Order …
