Objects Of Wartime Resistance And Food Scarcity, Nathalie Cooke May 2026

Objects Of Wartime Resistance And Food Scarcity, Nathalie Cooke

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper considers closely three missives crafted by individuals suffering life- threatening duress during wartime incarceration, one during World War One, and two during the Second World War. Only one of these three survived beyond wartime. All three examples involve food: messages embroidered on or about the sourcing of daily bread or describing dishes that were available only in memory. Nevertheless, the very act of crafting objects to carry communications beyond the dire circumstances in which these prisoners of war found themselves embodied hope and defiance. While acknowledging and describing the very different contexts of each of these examples, I …

Crisis, Hope And The Headline: Agenda Setting In England’S Covid Food Story, Dayna Brackley May 2026

Crisis, Hope And The Headline: Agenda Setting In England’S Covid Food Story, Dayna Brackley

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Panic buying during Covid was a crisis of perception as much as supply. This paper builds on the mixed method content analysis of 209 articles and accompanying images from six high circulation English newspapers, March to July 2020, setting it in the context of calls for civil food resilience and the UK national food strategy. The research shows how the press framed food access, responsibility and risk at a pivotal turning point. Sensationalised language appeared in 89% of articles, 68% carried negative sentiment, and 64% of analysed images showed empty shelves. Supermarkets were the dominant voice, quoted in 62% of …

Layers Of Representation: A Multidimensional Book Analysis, Mariah Pfundheller, Nikki Logan, Amy E. Lein, Sydney Bueno

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

This study evaluates how educators interpret the Multidimensional Framework for Inclusive Literature (MDFIL), a tool for evaluating and selecting multicultural literature for their classrooms. Participants self-identified as current, former/retired, or student teachers, or as undergraduates pursuing a teaching license at the time of the survey. Incorporating multicultural literature into educational settings has a positive impact on children's development. Multicultural literature fosters feelings of acceptance, cultural awareness, and empathy among students. By exposing children to diverse cultural perspectives, multicultural literature not only enhances their understanding of their own identities but also cultivates a greater appreciation of others' experiences. The benefits of …

Dream Pastries Of Despair And Wines Of Optimism: An Analysis Of Food And Drink As Emotive Narrative Devices In Dungeons And Dragons’ Curse Of Strahd, Carina Mansey, Mickey Cripps-Wells, Obie Tanner May 2026

Dream Pastries Of Despair And Wines Of Optimism: An Analysis Of Food And Drink As Emotive Narrative Devices In Dungeons And Dragons’ Curse Of Strahd, Carina Mansey, Mickey Cripps-Wells, Obie Tanner

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The collaborative fantasy tabletop role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons has gained heightened popularity in recent years. However, the role of food and drink as narrative devices that shape player emotions has received limited scholarly attention. This paper addresses this gap by examining the official adventure module Curse of Strahd, which guides players through the gothic horror setting of Barovia, a realm within the “Domain of Dread.” In this bleak and nightmarish landscape, players encounter foodstuffs designed to evoke feelings of fear, disgust, and longing, while experiencing fleeting moments of hope through acts of perceived charitable reprieve and symbolic resistance amid …

“The Last Fish”: Environmental Collapse And Food Crisis In Pink Slime (2024) By Fernanda Trías, Pepa Lago May 2026

“The Last Fish”: Environmental Collapse And Food Crisis In Pink Slime (2024) By Fernanda Trías, Pepa Lago

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

At the end of Pink Slime (2024) by Uruguayan writer Fernanda Trías, the unnamed narrator/protagonist eats tuna from a can and drops the empty container in the river, where it “floated for a moment until the water found its way in and dragged it to the bottom.” This scene mirrors the opening of the novel, when a fisherman releases back into the water a fish “so slight that it made no noise as it broke the surface. The last fish.” The presence of the fish, first as a live being and then as a preserved, shelf-stable foodstuff, frame the dystopian …

Wading In The Waters: The Public’S Use Rights In Non-Navigable Streams, Loren Vigil May 2026

Wading In The Waters: The Public’S Use Rights In Non-Navigable Streams, Loren Vigil

Natural Resources Journal

In New Mexico, the water law of prior appropriation rules. As a result, no individual holds a complete right to ownership of water in New Mexico. Instead, New Mexico landowners hold only a right to put appropriated waters to beneficial use. Appropriation of waters requires diversion, a distinct feature that prevents landowners from claiming natural watercourses flowing through their property boundaries. The unappropriated waters of the state are then vested in the state via public trust, to be used and enjoyed by the public. This public right to use often abuts landowner property rights, as water flows over and through …

Theorizing Rural Cosmopolitanism: Modern Economic History, Urban Elites, And The Political Economy Of Disaster Recovery, Manuel Montoya May 2026

Theorizing Rural Cosmopolitanism: Modern Economic History, Urban Elites, And The Political Economy Of Disaster Recovery, Manuel Montoya

Natural Resources Journal

A heavily understated dimension of cosmopolitanism is the urban rural divide. This is particularly true in the context of modern economics, which emerged at the same time that the notion of cosmopolitanism was gaining renewed political significance. This paper examines how economic thought of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries directly influenced the socio-literary interactions of a “World Republic of Letters” and how writers such as Goethe used terms like “universal spiritual commerce” to valorize the role of the city in the making of a new modern world. The paper also describes how the rural was left behind in …

Climate Change, Justice, And Equity In The Adjudication Of Hermit’S Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Claims, Brett Phelps May 2026

Climate Change, Justice, And Equity In The Adjudication Of Hermit’S Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Claims, Brett Phelps

Natural Resources Journal

Large-scale, climate-driven wildfire has become a recurring and foreseeable feature of life in the American West, creating long-term consequences for forests, watersheds, and rural communities. The 2022 Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, the largest wildfire in New Mexico history, provides an opportunity to examine how a federally created compensation statute functions once a climate disaster moves from legislation and rulemaking into adjudication. Sparked by prescribed burns on public land, the fire led Congress to enact the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act, directing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”) to provide expeditious and just compensation for injuries resulting from the fire. …

The Restaurant Pressure Cooker: Surviving Volatile External Threats, Mark Traynor, David S. Martin, Andrew Moreo May 2026

The Restaurant Pressure Cooker: Surviving Volatile External Threats, Mark Traynor, David S. Martin, Andrew Moreo

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Restaurants in the United States operate amid political and economic disruptions and mounting crises threatening their viability. These disruptions include changes in immigration enforcement, tariffs, labor laws, inflation, COVID-19 aftereffects, ongoing labor shortages, rising operating costs, and household living expenses, all of which reduce consumer demand. These forces disrupt staffing, increase input costs, strain supplier reliability, and alter service models. This ongoing study explores how restaurant managers interpret and respond to these pressures to maintain operations. The project considers the current operating environment as a source of disruption and crisis within modern food systems, linking these shocks to specific managerial …

Wars, Hurricanes, And Volcanoes: Community Cookbooks And The Politics Of Disaster Relief, Maria Paz Moreno May 2026

Wars, Hurricanes, And Volcanoes: Community Cookbooks And The Politics Of Disaster Relief, Maria Paz Moreno

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The community charitable cookbook originated in the United States after the Civil War. Since then, this model of fundraising has become popular both in the United States and around the world, often adapted to suit different purposes. Although community charitable cookbooks are traditionally put together to benefit various social causes, they sometimes go beyond the purely charitable to serve other goals, like preserving cultural traditions, promoting social change, or sustaining collective identity within diasporic communities. My paper focuses on community cookbooks created with the goal of fundraising for disaster relief. I will examine not only their charitable motivations, but also …

This study examined the measurement invariance of an affective engagement scale across gender and school location among secondary school students in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study was premised on the critical role of affective engagement in educational equity and quality. Three research purposes, each with corresponding research questions and hypotheses, were formulated in the study. We used a stratified random sampling to select 500 respondents from a diverse group of students (gender and school location). The Student Engagement Instrument by Appleton et al. (2006) was the instrument adopted for data collection. The instrument underwent a validation process, resulting in …

“...Coco Puffs For Dinner?”: Exploring Factors Influencing Meal Patterns, Food Choices, And Solo Dining Experiences Of International Students In Dublin Through Photovoice And Photo Elicitation, Disha Naik

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Moving abroad to study is, for many international students, a moment of crisis. Established routines are broken, familiar foodways are left behind, and the daily challenges of cultural adaptation, social isolation along with limited resources affect their food choices. Studies have shed light on the effects of cultural adaptation on foodways among international students (Sergile 2023). While some focus on solo dining experiences, this study focuses on factors that influence meal patterns, food choices, and solo dining experiences in international students in Dublin. Using a blend of two visual qualitative methods; photovoice and photo elicitation interviews, the study engaged with …

Hospitality In Crisis: Deciphering Food Insecurity Among Migrants From A Derridean Perspective, Alexandra Constantinescu, Naz Ali May 2026

Hospitality In Crisis: Deciphering Food Insecurity Among Migrants From A Derridean Perspective, Alexandra Constantinescu, Naz Ali

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Food insecurity faced by disadvantaged groups of migrants (i.e., voluntary migrants living in low-income households and forced migrants – namely asylum seekers) undermines the nature of hospitality, creating conditions of inhospitableness associated with hunger, injustice, insecurity, and poverty. This study presents a critical interpretation of hospitality in crisis by concentrating on food insecurity resulting from government and non-government food policies in England, that are inhospitable towards forced migrants – contributing to an area of enquiry with limited research in food and hospitality studies. The study draws on the teachings of Jacques Derrida, particularly his philosophical perspective on (in)hospitality/hostipitality, with conceptualisations …

The Correlation Between Perceptual Abilities And The Acquisition Of Non-Native Consonant Clusters, Hope Emma Nielson May 2026

The Correlation Between Perceptual Abilities And The Acquisition Of Non-Native Consonant Clusters, Hope Emma Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

A common approach in the study of speech motor learning is to have speakers learn to produce clusters of consonants that do not occur in their native language. This study investigated the relationship between auditory or speech perceptual abilities and the initial acquisition of non-native stop-stop consonant clusters. Sixty young adult participants (56 female, four male) were administered a gap detection test and a speech-in-noise test to assess their innate perceptual skills. The participants then performed a nonsense-word repetition task featuring non-native consonant clusters in the initial position. The participants' spoken productions of the nonwords were recorded and analyzed acoustically …

Behind The Bar: Empathy Burnout's Impact On Lawyers' Job Competency, Eva L. Newkirk May 2026

Behind The Bar: Empathy Burnout's Impact On Lawyers' Job Competency, Eva L. Newkirk

Honors Projects

It is well established within psychological literature how burnout develops among human service professionals including nurses, therapists, police officers, and first responders. Despite facing the same kinds of risks for burnout development by helping professions, especially trauma and stressful client relationships, the development and consequences empathy burnout have been under-researched in lawyers. This project aims to explore existing literature around burnout and empathy as related to job competency in legal professionals and develop a survey that explores empathy as a potential indirect mediating variable from burnout to employee engagement. The article additionally discusses the pathway from second-hand trauma to empathy …

Food Insecurity And Mental Health Among High School Students: Evidence From National And Virginia Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Data, Nigel C. James, Asef Raiyan Hoque, Jada Pedersen, Huong Doan, Liam Hayes, Leah Suggs May 2026

Food Insecurity And Mental Health Among High School Students: Evidence From National And Virginia Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Data, Nigel C. James, Asef Raiyan Hoque, Jada Pedersen, Huong Doan, Liam Hayes, Leah Suggs

Health Studies Faculty Publications

Background

Youth mental health problems are rising nationally. Virginia ranks among the lowest states in youth mental health access and has concentrated pockets of food insecurity (FI), underscoring the urgency of policy responses. FI is a known risk factor, yet surveillance often relies on single-item measures. We introduce a multidimensional Food Insecurity Index (FII) to examine associations with adolescent mental health.

Methods

We analyzed 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System data from Virginia (n = 1866) and the United States (n = 10,724). The FII combined five indicators capturing acute scarcity and chronic dietary compromise. Survey-weighted logistic regression …

The Worker Voice Gap: How Much Say Do Workers Want—And How Much Do They Actually Experience?, Alexander Hertel-Fernandez, Thomas A. Kochan May 2026

The Worker Voice Gap: How Much Say Do Workers Want—And How Much Do They Actually Experience?, Alexander Hertel-Fernandez, Thomas A. Kochan

Upjohn Institute Policy Papers

•The worker voice gap—the difference between the influence that workers want and what they experience—is very large. Nearly three-quarters of American workers want more voice at work than they currently have in three key areas: 1) compensation, 2) working conditions, and3) use of new technologies at work.

• The voice deficit is largest for compensation, but majorities of workers also express voice gaps over working conditions and the use of new technologies in their workplaces.

•Although voice gaps are relatively widespread, women tend to report larger voice gaps than men, and younger and middle-aged workers tend to report larger gaps …

Internalized Homophobia As An Influence On Participation In Hiv Prevention Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men (Ymsm), Kasey I. Brazee May 2026

Internalized Homophobia As An Influence On Participation In Hiv Prevention Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men (Ymsm), Kasey I. Brazee

Honors Scholar Theses

Stigma is a known barrier to accessing preventative services for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), however, the types of stigmas involved in this relationship remain not well defined. Homophobia, or negative attitudes directed towards homosexuality, is a particularly important type of stigma considering the disproportionate effect of HIV on men who have sex with men (MSM). Young MSM (YMSM) are especially impacted, making them a key population in the context of HIV prevention research.  Internalized homophobia, which refers to homophobia that one directs towards themselves, is under researched regarding its role in participating in HIV prevention. In this study, we aimed …

Sexual Touching While Sleeping: Occurrence, Context, Responses, And Perceptions Of Sexual Assault Among Undergraduates, Michelle Drouin, Tara Cornelius May 2026

Sexual Touching While Sleeping: Occurrence, Context, Responses, And Perceptions Of Sexual Assault Among Undergraduates, Michelle Drouin, Tara Cornelius

Health Services and Informatics Research

Sexual consent is central to cases of sexual assault and rape. Logically, sleeping persons cannot consent; yet there has been scant research examining the experience of sexual touching while sleeping. The current research is the first known to specifically examine sexual touching with a sleeping partner, with a goal of understanding the contextual features surrounding, responses to, and perceptions of the legality and acceptability of these behaviors. Undergraduate participants from two universities (N = 724) completed several measures assessing their experience of sexual touching while sleeping, the context, sexual precedence, responses, and their perceptions of such touching. A significant proportion …

This study aims to analyze the influence of social media usage on the learning process of Library and Information Science students. Using a qualitative method with in-depth interview techniques, this research explores students' experiences and lecturers' perspectives regarding digital interaction in an academic context. The results identify four main patterns: high digital distraction increasing cognitive load, the use of social media as a learning support system, emotional dependency triggering academic procrastination, and self-control strategies applied by students. The findings indicate that social media has a dualistic impact; on one hand, it serves as a source of distraction and time management …
