Decoherence In A Driven Three-Level System, A. R.P. Rau, Weichang Zhao Jan 2003

Decoherence In A Driven Three-Level System, A. R.P. Rau, Weichang Zhao

Faculty Publications

Dissipation and decoherence, and the evolution from pure to mixed states in quantum physics, are handled through master equations for the density matrix. Master equations such as the Lindblad equation preserve the trace of this matrix. Viewing them as first-order time-dependent operator equations for the elements of the density matrix, a unitary integration procedure can be adapted to solve for these elements. A simple model for decoherence preserves the Hermiticity of the density matrix. A single, classical Riccati equation is the only one requiring numerical handling to obtain a full solution of the quantum evolution. The procedure is general, valid …

Detectability Of Gravitational Waves From Sn 1987a, Giovanni Santostasi, Warren Johnson, Juhan Frank Jan 2003

Detectability Of Gravitational Waves From Sn 1987a, Giovanni Santostasi, Warren Johnson, Juhan Frank

Faculty Publications

We discuss the potential for the detection of gravitational waves from a rapidly spinning neutron star produced by supernova (SN) 1987A, taking the parameters claimed by Middleditch et al. at face value. Assuming that the dominant mechanism for spin-down is gravitational waves emitted by a freely precessing neutron star, it is possible to constrain the wobble angle, the effective moment of inertia of the precessing crust, and the crust cracking stress limit. Our analysis suggests that if the interpretation of the Middleditch data is correct, the compact remnant of SN 1987A may well provide a predictable source of gravitational waves …

This article explains how the law of punitive damages has developed in Minnesota both before and after Jensen, and illustrates the significance of the Jensen case through a detailed discussion of the facts and outcome of the Kennedy Building Associates case. Section II of this article discusses the purpose of punitive damages, the process in Minnesota by which a punitive damages claim may be added to a case, and the circumstances under which punitive damages may be awarded. Section III of this article discusses the role of the courts in reviewing a jury's award of punitive damages in light of …

Developing A User-Process Model For Designing Menu-Based Interfaces: An Exploratory Study, Boryung Ju, Myke Gluck Jan 2003

Developing A User-Process Model For Designing Menu-Based Interfaces: An Exploratory Study, Boryung Ju, Myke Gluck

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to organize menu items based on a user-process model and implement a new version of current software for enhancing usability of interfaces. Dervin & Nilan's time-line method is used to develop a user-process model for user interface design. We developed a user process model drawn from actual users' understanding of their goals and strategies to solve their information needs by using Dervin's Sense-Making Theory with sense-making interviews. Six experienced subjects were recruited for the sense-making interviews. Each subject went through a learning/exploration session, and was asked to recall and describe specific information needs throughout …

Downstream Hydraulic Geometry Relations: 2. Calibration And Testing, Vijay P. Singh, Chih Ted Yang, Zhi Qiang Deng Jan 2003

Downstream Hydraulic Geometry Relations: 2. Calibration And Testing, Vijay P. Singh, Chih Ted Yang, Zhi Qiang Deng

Faculty Publications

Using 456 data sets under bank-full conditions obtained from various sources, the geometric relations, derived in part 1 [Singh et al., 2003], are calibrated and verified using the split sampling approach. The calibration of parameters shows that the change in stream power is not shared equally among hydraulic variables and that the unevenness depends on the boundary conditions to be satisfied by the channel under consideration. The agreement between the observed values of the hydraulic variables and those predicted by the derived relations is close for the verification data set and lends credence to the hypotheses employed in this study.

The Staging Transformation Approach To Mixing Initiative, Robert Capra, Michael Narayan, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan, Manuel A. Pérez-Quiñones Jan 2003

The Staging Transformation Approach To Mixing Initiative, Robert Capra, Michael Narayan, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan, Manuel A. Pérez-Quiñones

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Mixed-initiative interaction is an important facet of many conversational interfaces, flexible planning architectures, intelligent tutoring systems, and interactive information retrieval systems. Software systems for mixed-initiative interaction must enable us to both operationalize the mixing of initiative (i.e., support the creation of practical dialogs) and to reason in real-time about how a flexible mode of interaction can be supported (e.g., from a meta-dialog standpoint). In this paper, we present the staging transformation approach to mixing initiative, where a dialog script captures the structure of the dialog and dialog control processes are realized through generous use of program transformation techniques (e.g., partial …

Professional Or Practitioner? What’S Missing From The Codes?, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2003

Professional Or Practitioner? What’S Missing From The Codes?, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Imagine a code of ethics that advocated shady business practices and that the organization proposing the code came under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. Imagine further, that the investigation came to trial and the stance taken by the organization was found to be illegal by the highest court of the land. Such a scenario, if true, would raise a host of questions about codes of professional ethics, not the least of which would be “What value, if any, do codes of ethics have for the teaching of ethics?”

Sadly, the above scenario is factual. However, I’m not referring …

Personalizing Interactions With Information Systems, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan Jan 2003

Personalizing Interactions With Information Systems, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Personalization constitutes the mechanisms and technologies necessary to customize information access to the end-user. It can be defined as the automatic adjustment of information content, structure, and presentation tailored to the individual. In this chapter, we study personalization from the viewpoint of personalizing interaction. The survey covers mechanisms for information-finding on the web, advanced information retrieval systems, dialog-based applications, and mobile access paradigms. Specific emphasis is placed on studying how users interact with an information system and how the system can encourage and foster interaction. This helps bring out the role of the personalization system as a facilitator which reconciles …

Movements Of Mind: The Matrix, Metaphors, And Re-Imagining Education, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2003

Movements Of Mind: The Matrix, Metaphors, And Re-Imagining Education, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Using the popular movie The Matrix to evoke both metaphors for human existence and models for teaching and learning, this article revisits arguments made by educators, philosophers, linguists, and anthropologists that metaphors govern our ways of perceiving, naming, and acting in the world, whether we are aware of this phenomenon or not. Building on this premise and through an examination of two metaphors that have dominated notions of and approaches to education in the United States, the article invites readers to make conscious the metaphors that inform our thoughts and actions, discern the "realities" we construct for ourselves and for …

Patterns Of Curriculum Design, Doug Blank, Deepak Kumar Jan 2003

Patterns Of Curriculum Design, Doug Blank, Deepak Kumar

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

We present a perspective on the design of a curriculum for a new computer science program at a women s liberal arts college. The design incorporates lessons learned at the college in its successful implementation of other academic programs, incorporation of best practices in curriculum design at other colleges, results from studies performed on various computer science programs, and a significant number of our own ideas. Several observations and design decisions are presented as curriculum design patterns. The goal of making the design patterns explicit is to encourage a discussion on curriculum design that goes beyond the identification of core …
