Analysis Of A New Protocol For Bluetooth Network Formation, Vishakh. Madhusoodanan
Analysis Of A New Protocol For Bluetooth Network Formation, Vishakh. Madhusoodanan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This research work deals with analyzing the performance of a new protocol for distributed network formation and re-formation in Bluetooth ad-hoc networks. The Bluetooth network may be a piconet or a scatternet consisting of a number of piconets. One of the salient features of this protocol is that, there is no leader election process involved. We can establish simultaneous multiple connections between masters and slaves. The delay in formation of the network is analyzed with respect to the number of devices in the network. Also, the network diameter, the number of piconets formed and the impact of device failures are …
Boundary-Integral Analysis Of Nonlinear Diffraction Forces On A Submerged Body, Vimal. Vinayan
Boundary-Integral Analysis Of Nonlinear Diffraction Forces On A Submerged Body, Vimal. Vinayan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A three-dimensional nonlinear time-dependent boundary-integral algorithm is developed to compute wave forces on an underwater vehicle. The effect of viscosity is neglected and the cases for which the effects could be important are discussed. The present algorithm is however an efficient tool to determine wave forces on a submerged body and can also be integrated into a viscous flow algorithm. A numerical wave tank is constructed for the simulation. A damping layer is introduced to minimize spurious reflection of scattered waves at the open boundary. A sinusoidal progressive pressure patch is used to generate incident waves. Wave forces are determined …
Application Of Wavelets To Image And Video Coding, Esfandiar Zolghadr
Application Of Wavelets To Image And Video Coding, Esfandiar Zolghadr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In this thesis we applied wavelet transforms to image and video coding. First, a survey of various wavelets and their features is presented, including continuous, discrete, and orthogonal wavelets. Theories and concepts underlying one and two-dimensional wavelet transforms are introduced and compared to Fourier transform and sub-band coding. The core of the thesis is the implementation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional codec architectures and their application to coding images and videos, respectively. We studied performance of the wavelet codec by comparing it to DCT and JPEG coding techniques. We applied these techniques for compression of a variety of test images and …

Building A Template Of Electoral Strategies For Women Who Aspire To The Superintendency In Appointed School Districts Within The Southern United States, Marianne Russo Swain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Based on an observation that women have been more successful in ascending to the level of school superintendent within southern school districts that use electoral procedures, this study examined unique electoral strategies women superintendents use that maybe transferable to women who aspire to the superintendency within districts in which appointment is the only means of ascension. The researcher interviewed five superintendents in districts within the southern United States. The data were analyzed using three conceptual frameworks: (a) Murphy's governance theory, (b) Ferguson's bureaucratic theory, and (c) Lather's emancipatory theory. The data were also evaluated in terms of elected and appointed …
Computation Of Hydrodynamic Coefficients And Determination Of Dynamic Stability Characteristics Of An Underwater Vehicle Including Free Surface Effects, Olivier. Saout
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The inviscid hydrodynamic coefficients of an underwater vehicle (Ocean EXplorer), including the nonlinear effects of the wave surface, are computed using a boundary-integral method. A mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation (Longuet-Higgins and Cokelet, 1976) is used for the treatment of nonlinear free-surface conditions. The algorithm is validated using the work-energy theorem (Yeung, 1982) and experimental data. Results, in the form of free-surface elevations and hydrodynamic coefficients, are obtained for a range of body geometries and maneuvers. The open-loop dynamics of underwater vehicles are then investigated by solving the 3DOF rigid-body equations of motion (OXY plane). The advantages and possible usage of the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The development of high resolution LIDAR DSM combined with digital infrared ortho-photography data enhances the ability to map canopy structures with a higher degree of accuracy and precision than with either data set alone. The purpose of this thesis is to map Australian Pine (Casuarina equisetifolia with a 85% or greater accuracy by creating a methodology that uses LIDAR and color infrared ortho-photography and to test it within three different landscape types within Broward County. LIDAR features below a determined height threshold (i.e. Deerpoint 25 ft) were eliminated and recoded to 0 to create Mask 1. NDVI technique separated non-vegetative …
Comprehensive Comparative Study Of Multiple Classification Techniques For Software Quality Estimation, Kishore. Puppala
Comprehensive Comparative Study Of Multiple Classification Techniques For Software Quality Estimation, Kishore. Puppala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Reliability and quality are desired features in industrial software applications. In some cases, they are absolutely essential. When faced with limited resources, software project managers will need to allocate such resources to the most fault prone areas. The ability to accurately classify a software module as fault-prone or not fault-prone enables the manager to make an informed resource allocation decision. An accurate quality classification avoids wasting resources on modules that are not fault-prone. It also avoids missing the opportunity to correct faults relatively early in the development cycle, when they are less costly. This thesis seeks to introduce the classification …
Count Models For Software Quality Estimation, Kehan Gao
Count Models For Software Quality Estimation, Kehan Gao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The primary aim of software engineering is to produce quality software that is delivered on time, within budget, and fulfils all its requirements. A timely estimation of software quality can serve as a prerequisite in achieving high reliability of software-based systems. More specifically, software quality assurance efforts can be prioritized for targeting program modules that are most likely to have a high number of faults. Software quality estimation models are generally of two types: a classification model that predicts the class membership of modules into two or more quality-based classes, and a quantitative prediction model that estimates the number of …

Design, Implementation And Testing Of A Bio-Inspired Propulsion System For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Goff Ivan Le
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Some Autonomous Underwater Vehicles have recently been designed to mimic the locomotion of underwater animals. A new way of propulsion which uses Oscillating Fin Thrusters (OFTs) has been implemented on the AUV Morpheus, with the Nektor module. In particular, first a low level adaptive controller has been developed with the purpose of studying the characteristics of the OFT. Then, a new vehicle using Morpheus' base has been built in order to implement this module and test it. This required for the Lonworks network to be interfaced with QNXnet to create a multi communication protocol vehicle. Concerning the high level control, …
Design Approaches For Asymmetrical Marine Pipeline Cathodic Protection Systems, Haijun. Qian
Design Approaches For Asymmetrical Marine Pipeline Cathodic Protection Systems, Haijun. Qian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Marine pipeline cathodic protection systems for asymmetrical situation were systematically investigated by means of a newly proposed approach and Boundary Element Method (BEM). Potential attenuation profiles from BEM modeling indicate that far-field cathode potentials of different pipe sections approach identical values under different coating resistance and different electrolyte resistivity conditions provided anodes are separated by at least 10m and metallic resistance is negligible. A series of equations based on the Slope Parameter Method (SPM) has been modified for more extensive applicability. Several design examples have been analyzed and the results verified by BEM. Cathode potential and current demands projected by …
Development Of A Variable-Length Underwater Cable Model, Dusan. Curic
Development Of A Variable-Length Underwater Cable Model, Dusan. Curic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis develops a novel variable length cable model to simulate the behavior of submerged cables with variable unstretched length and a PC based simulation that integrates the governing cable equations. The general model is developed from continuous cable equations that are discretized using a finite element method with linear elements. Two systems of equations were developed, one for a variable length elastic element and the other for a constant length elastic element. A cable transition model is developed to ensure dynamic compatibility when a variable length element is divided or combined. The model proved to be an efficient and …

Dynamic Simulation And Control Of An Autonomous Surface Vehicle, Tannen S. Vanzwieten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) research and development is inspired by the navigating and communicatiog challenges of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). The development objective is to provide real time positioning of and communication with AUVs through the air-sea interface. Despite extensive research on AUVs, the ASV has had limited research. The NAVY's desire to make AUV's defense capabilities realizable adds to the project's appeal. Guidance and control play an integral part in the ASV's success, motivating this thesis work. The overall vehicle dynamics were modeled and numerically simulated for 3 DOF lateral motion. These are development tools for the testing and …

Antitrust law and telecommunications regulation have long adopted different stances on whether to mandate open access to information platforms. This article aims to help regulators and commentators incorporate both Chicago School and post-Chicago School arguments in evaluating this basic policy choice, suggesting how they can be integrated in an effective manner. In particular, the authors outline three alternative models that the FCC could adopt to guide its regulation of information platforms and facilitate a true convergence between antitrust and regulatory policy.

The McMurdo Dry Valleys is the largest of the ice-free areas in Antarctica. Precipitation events in excess of 1 cm of snow accumulation are rare. During the winter, snow is transported by strong katabatic winds blowing from the polar plateau, and deposited into the lee of topographic features (e.g., stream channels and other topographic depressions). At the start of the austral summer (early October), as much as 10% of the valley soils may be covered by distributed snow patches. Because liquid water is the primary driver of biological, physical, and chemical processes in this polar desert, quantifying fluxes of water …

Diffractive photoproduction of vector mesons, γp → VY, where Y is a proton-dissociative system, has been measured in e+p interactions with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 25 pb-1. The differential cross section, dσ/dt, is presented for 1.2 < -t < 12 GeV2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred to the vector meson. The data span the range in photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, W, from 80 GeV to 120 GeV. The t distributions are well fit by a power law, dσ/dt ∝ (-t)-n. The slope of the effective Pomeron trajectory, measured from the W dependence of the ρ0 and φ cross sections in bins of t, is consistent with zero. The ratios dσγp→φY/dt to dσγp→ρ0Y/dt and dσγp→J/ψY/dt to dσγp→ρ0Y/dt increase with increasing -t. Decay-angle analyses for ρ0, φ and J/ψ mesons have been carried out. For the ρ0 and φ mesons, contributions from single and double helicity flip are observed. The results are compared to expectations of theoretical models.

A search for narrow-width resonances that decay into electron+jet or neutrino+jet has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the DESY ep collider HERA operating at center-of-mass energies of 300 and 318 GeV. An integrated e+p luminosity of 114.8 pb-1 and e-p luminosity of 16.7 pb-1 were used. No evidence for any resonance was found. Limits were derived on the Yukawa coupling λ as a function of the mass of a hypothetical resonance that has arbitrary decay branching ratios into eq or vq. These limits also apply to squarks predicted by R-parity-violating supersymmetry. Limits for the production of leptoquarks described …

Analysis Of Multibeam Crosschecks Using Automated Methods, Susan Sebastian, Dave Wells
Hydrographic Science Research Center
The widespread use of multibeam sonar systems has brought to the forefront many developments to handle the tremendous amounts of data collected. One of the valuable quality assurance tools available for hydrographic data is that of analyzing depths where two tracklines cross. In contrast to the single-beam echosounding case, where crossing tracks result in single overlapping footprints, multibeam sonar crossing tracks involve the analysis of a multitude of redundant data points. The earliest (pre-GPS) multibeam crossing track analysis tools were used to improve georeferencing, shifting tracks to achieve spatial correlation at all intersections. Now, with georeferencing handled by GPS and …

Wind, wave, and water level data were used to determine the effects of individual storm events. The primary objective was to analyze the profile line changes for the study region. Shoreline and sand volume changes were computed and compared to the proximity to Sebastian Inlet, the location and width of the nearshore reef, and the differing directions …
Phosphorus Contamination And Storage In Bottom Sediments Of The James River Arm Of Table Rock Lake, Southwest Missouri, Marc R. Owen
Phosphorus Contamination And Storage In Bottom Sediments Of The James River Arm Of Table Rock Lake, Southwest Missouri, Marc R. Owen
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Eutrophic conditions in the upper James River Arm (JRA) of Table Rock Lake have been linked to phosphorus (P) inputs by wastewater treatment facilities and increasing urban development in the upper James River Basin (3,770 km2). Since the majority of P in aquatic environments is bound to sediments, bottom sediment can function as both a source and sink of P in lake systems. This study evaluates the spatial distribution, physical and chemical characteristics, and storage of sediment-P in the active layer ( < 5cm) of bottom sediments in the JRA. The JRA makes up about 20% of Table Rock Lake’s surface area, contributes about 30% of the inflow, and has the poorest water quality of the entire lake. For this study, grab samples were collected in the main arm and tributary coves at the deepest part of the lake and at several shallow sites along the main arm. Concentrations increase in a down-lake direction in the main arm ranging from 5 to >2000 ppm P. However, water-column P concentrations show a decrease down-lake, indicating that sedimentation is removing P from …

Legal Separation: The Relationship Between Law School And The Central University In The Late Nineteenth Century, Mark Bartholomew
Journal Articles
Using Yale Law School as an example, this Article describes the interaction between university-affiliated law schools and the larger university during a crucial period in the development of legal education: the last third of the nineteenth century. At the same time, the Article contrasts Yale with other law schools of the day to show what made Yale unique and how Yale’s nineteenth-century idiosyncrasies would come to shape legal education at other schools in the twentieth century. Part I examines the university administration’s attitude toward the law school and how it typified law school-university relations in the late nineteenth century. Part …
