Responsive, Low-Cost Access To Space With Elvis — An Expendable Launch Vehicle With Integrated Spacecraft, Richard Van Allen, Thomas Bauer, Shyama Chakroborty, Sonya Collier, Paul Graven, Jane Hansen, Hans Meissinger, James Wertz

Small Satellite Conference

The ELVIS (Expendable Launch Vehicle with Integrated Spacecraft) concept involves: (1) dropping off the upper stage of the launch vehicle as low as possible, with integral low-thrust propulsion taking the spacecraft to its final orbital destination; (2) using the spacecraft bus to provide the avionics functions needed to fly a launch vehicle to orbit so as to avoid the duplication of avionics hardware and software between the satellite bus and the launch vehicle. The result is a reduction in the parts count, weight, and cost of the launch vehicle. There are major benefits associated with early staging — the upper …

Testing The Focal Point Theory Of Legal Compliance: Expressive Influence In An Experimental Hawk/Dove Game, Richard H. Mcadams, Janice Nadler Aug 2003

Testing The Focal Point Theory Of Legal Compliance: Expressive Influence In An Experimental Hawk/Dove Game, Richard H. Mcadams, Janice Nadler

Law and Economics Papers

Economic theories of legal compliance emphasize legal sanctions, while psychological and sociological theories stress the perceived legitimacy of law. Without disputing the importance of either mechanism, we test a third way that law affects behavior, an expressive theory that claims law influences behavior by creating a focal point around which individuals coordinate. The focal point theory makes three claims: (1) that the need for coordination is pervasive because "mixed motive" games involving coordination model common disputes; (2) that, in such games, any third-party cheap talk that calls the players' attention to a particular equilibrium tends to produce that equilibrium; and …

An Economic Analysis Of A Simple Structural Method To Reduce Road-Kills Of Royal Terns At Bridges, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Henry T. Smith, Alice M. Bard, Terese V. Harbor, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Royal terns (Sterna maxima) in Florida are listed as a “species of special concern” by the Florida Committee on Rare and Endangered Plants and Animals (Egensteiner et al., 1996). These birds live along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida throughout the year (Egensteiner et al., 1996); their winter range along the Atlantic Coast of the United States is from North Carolina south through Florida (Clapp et al., 1983), with the Florida population augmented by terns migrating from breeding colonies farther north. Collisions with vehicles cause many marine bird road-kills at some coastal roads and bridges in Florida …

Adult Male Emigration And A Female-Based Social Organization In Swift Foxes, Vulpes Velox, Jan F. Kamler, Warren B. Ballard, Eric M. Gese, Robert L. Harriqson, Seija Karki, Kevin Mote

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Members of the family Canidae are distinguished from other carnivore families by pair bonding and male care of the young. Because of the importance of food provisioning and territorial defence by males, social structure among canids is shared or even dominated by males. However, small, insectivorous species of canids show little male parental care, although whether social structure differs from other canids is unknown. We combined data from three independent research projects on a small canid, the swift fox, to help elucidate the social organization of this species. Based on data on movements of 35 adult mated pairs and the …

Affirmative Action: More Efficient Than Color Blindness, Abraham Lee Wickelgren Aug 2003

Affirmative Action: More Efficient Than Color Blindness, Abraham Lee Wickelgren

ExpressO

One of the most compelling reasons against affirmative action is the principle of color blindness, that is, the idea that race is an irrelevant characteristic that should not affect higher education admissions or hiring decisions. Despite its intuitive appeal, this paper shows that adherence to this principle impedes economic efficiency when there has been past discrimination based on color. Past discrimination creates inefficiencies in the economy that persist across generations. Because of this persistence, race is not an irrelevant characteristic for firms and universities looking to hire or admit the best candidates. Affirmative action, not color-blindness, is necessary to reduce …

Synthesis Of Chiral Surfactants For Enantioselective Organic Synthesis., Kalyan Mondal Aug 2003

Synthesis Of Chiral Surfactants For Enantioselective Organic Synthesis., Kalyan Mondal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first step of the synthesis of the hydrocarbon-based chiral surfactant (2) involved the methylation of (S)-leucinol to give (2S)-N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-(1-hydroxy-4-methyl-1-pentyl)-2-ammonium bromide (2.92g, 67%). The chiral surfactant was synthesized by reacting (2S)-N,N-dimethyl-2-amino-4-methyl-1-pentanol (1) with bromohexadecane (2.06g, 71%). The functionalized styrene for the polymer supported chiral catalyst (6) was synthesized by reacting (1) with 4-vinylbenzyl chloride. The polymerization was carried out with 10% of the functionalized monomer (5) (1.26g, 70.2%), 5% cross-linking agent divinylbenzene, and 85% of styrene with AIBN as the initiator. The structure of each of the products was confirmed by using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The activity of the …

Extrinsic Calibration Of A Camera And Laser Range Finder, Robert Pless, Qilong Zhang Aug 2003

Extrinsic Calibration Of A Camera And Laser Range Finder, Robert Pless, Qilong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We describes theoretical and experimental results for the extrinsic calibration of sensor platform consisting of a camera and a laser range finder. The proposed technique requires the system to observe a planar pattern in several poses, and the constraints are based upon data captured simultaneously from the camera and the laser range finder. The planar pattern surface and the laser scanline on the planar pattern are related, so these data constrain the relative position and orientation of the camera and laser range finder. The calibration procedure starts with a closed-from solution, which provides initial conditions for a subsequent nonlinear refinement. …

Extrinsic Auto-Calibration Of A Camera And Laser Range Finder, Robert Pless, Qilong Zhang Aug 2003

Extrinsic Auto-Calibration Of A Camera And Laser Range Finder, Robert Pless, Qilong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper describes theoretical and experimental results for the auto-calibration of sensor platform consisting of a camera and a laser range finder. Real-world use of autonomous sensor platforms often requires the recalibration of sensors without an explicit calibration object. The constraints are based upon data captured simultaneously from the camera and the laser range finder while the sensor plat-form undergoes an arbitrary motion. The rigid motions of both sensors are related, so these data constrain the relative position and orientation of the camera and laser range finder. We introduce the mathematical constraints for auto-calibration techniques based upon both discrete and …

Secure Remote Control And Configuration Of Fpx Platform In Gigabit Ethernet Environment, Haoyu Song Aug 2003

Secure Remote Control And Configuration Of Fpx Platform In Gigabit Ethernet Environment, Haoyu Song

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Because of its flexibility and high performance, reconfigurable logic functions implemented on the Field-programmable Port Extender (FPX ) are well suited for implementing network processing such as packet classification, filtering and intrusion detection functions. This project focuses on two key aspects of the FPX system. One is providing a Gigabit Ethernet interface by designing logic for a FPGA which is located on a line card. Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) packets are handled in hardware and Ethernet frames are processed and transformed into cells suitable for standard FPX application. The other effort is to provide a secure channel to enable remote …

Gender, Spatial Learning Trials, And Object Recall., Tifani R. Hite Aug 2003

Gender, Spatial Learning Trials, And Object Recall., Tifani R. Hite

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous researchers have reported women doing better than men in object recall. The current study tested for gender differences in object recall over three memorization trials using gender neutral stimuli. Fifty men and 53 women viewed pictures of 60 objects (15 in each of four quadrants) for one minute, and then had three minutes to recall as many objects and locations as they could. This procedure was followed over three trials. Women performed better than men, and the difference increased across trials. Training was successful as participants recalled significantly more objects and locations on trial 3 than on trial 1. …

Placing Monitoring Devices In Electric Power Networks Modeled By Block Graphs., David Wayne Atkins Aug 2003

Placing Monitoring Devices In Electric Power Networks Modeled By Block Graphs., David Wayne Atkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of monitoring an electric power system by placing as few measurement devices in the system as possible is closely related to the well known vertex covering and dominating set problems in graph theory. A set S of vertices is defined to be a power dominating set of a graphs if every vertex and every edge in the system is monitored by the set S (following a set of rules for power system monitoring). The minimum cardinality of a power dominating set of a graph is its power domination number. In this thesis, we investigate the power domination number …

Winning An Independence Achievement Game., Mark C. Taylor Aug 2003

Winning An Independence Achievement Game., Mark C. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The game "Generalized Kayles (or Independence Achievement)" is played by two players A and B on an arbitrary graph G. The players alternate removing a vertex and its neighbors from G, the winner being the last player with a nonempty set from which to choose. In this thesis, we present winning strategies for some paths.

Spectroscopic Examination Of The Catalytic Decomposition Of Hydrogen Peroxide By A Copper (Ii) Complex Of A Dissymmetric Schiff Base And An Imidazole Derivative., John D. Davis Jr. Aug 2003

Spectroscopic Examination Of The Catalytic Decomposition Of Hydrogen Peroxide By A Copper (Ii) Complex Of A Dissymmetric Schiff Base And An Imidazole Derivative., John D. Davis Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies involving copper (II) complexed with a dissymmetric Schiff base and imidazole derivatives had identified catalase activity of these complexes towards H2O2. Reactions such as this are of great interest due to the important role of copper-based complexes in biological systems. Our research has been conducted to add to the base of knowledge regarding the efforts of other researchers to investigate copper complexes that exhibit similar reactivity as copper-based proteins towards dioxygen. The copper complex chosen for this study contained a tri-dentate Schiff base adduct which, when complexed with an imidazole derivative, limited the manner …

Mechanisms For The Origin Of Turbulence In Non-Star-Forming Clouds: The Translucent Cloud Mbm 40, Steven N. Shore, Loris Magnani, Ted La Rosa, Meredith N. Mccarthy Aug 2003

Mechanisms For The Origin Of Turbulence In Non-Star-Forming Clouds: The Translucent Cloud Mbm 40, Steven N. Shore, Loris Magnani, Ted La Rosa, Meredith N. Mccarthy

Faculty Articles

We present a multiline, high spatial and velocity resolution CO, H I, and IRAS 100 μm study of the high-latitude, low-mass, non-star-forming, translucent molecular cloud MBM 40. The cloud mass is distributed into two ridges, or filaments, that form a hairpin structure. Velocity channel maps indicate a highly ordered flow in the molecular gas, with the northeastern part of the filament moving away from and the southwestern filament moving toward the observer relative to the mean cloud radial velocity. Significant changes in emissivity occur over 0.03 pc, indicating large transverse density gradients along the ridges. However, the velocity field appears …
