Development Of A Systems Engineering Model Of The Chemical Separations Process: Quarterly Progress Report 5/16/03- 8/15/03, Yitung Chen, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Two activities are proposed in this Phase I task: the development of a systems engineering model and the refinement of the Argonne code AMUSE (Argonne Model for Universal Solvent Extraction). The detailed systems engineering model is the start of an integrated approach to the analysis of the materials separations associated with the AAA Program. A second portion of the project is to streamline and improve an integral part of the overall systems model, which is the software package AMUSE. AMUSE analyzes the UREX process and other related solvent extraction processes and defines many of the process streams that are integral …

Development Of A Systems Engineering Model Of The Chemical Separations Process, Yitung Chen, Sean Hsieh, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The AFCI program is developing technology for the transmutation of nuclear waste to address many of the long-term disposal issues. An integral part of this program is the proposed chemical separations scheme.

Nearly all issues related to risks to future generations arising from long-term disposal of such spent nuclear fuel is attributable to about 2% of its content. Such 2% is made up primarily of plutonium, neptunium, americium, and curium (the transuranic elements) and long-lived isotopes of iodine and technetium created as products from the fission process in power reactors. When transuranics are removed from discharged fuel destined for disposal, …

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The analysis of mold filling and solidification continues with progress being made for the consideration of these two features within one model. Analysis of the induction heating process of an Induction Skull Melter (ISM) is under study. Efforts are underway to validate the modeling procedure and specific comparisons are being made to previously published work. Few detailed modeling results have been reported by other researchers, making the validations an important part of the overall modeling process. Skin heating depths, power deposition rates, and other process parameters are being evaluated for use in upcoming furnace design simulations. Efforts are beginning on …

Teaching The Ethical Foundations Of Economics, Jonathan B. Wight Aug 2003

Teaching The Ethical Foundations Of Economics, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

Some economists consider their discipline a science, and thereby divorced from messy ethical details, the normative passions of right and wrong. They teach in a moral vacuum, perhaps even advocating economic agents' operating independently and avariciously, asserting that this magically produces the greatest good for society.

First-Principles Calculations For Nitrogen-Containing Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, James P. Lewis, Mingwen Zhao, Yueyugan Xia, Ruiqin Zhang Aug 2003

First-Principles Calculations For Nitrogen-Containing Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, James P. Lewis, Mingwen Zhao, Yueyugan Xia, Ruiqin Zhang

Faculty Publications

We present calculations for possible configurations of nitrogen-containing single-walled carbon nanotubes and their electronic properties obtained with the ab initio tight-binding FIREBALL method. It is found that nitrogen atoms can be energetically incorporated into the carbon network in three forms: Substitution, substitution with formation of a vacancy structure, and chemical adsorption. The different forms exhibit different local densities of states near the Fermi levels, which might suggest a potential method to control the electronic properties of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes

The Extended Satellite Transport Protocol: Its Design And Evaluation, Maged Elaasar, Zheyin Li, Michel Barbeau, Evangelos Kranakis

Small Satellite Conference

Being both wireless and mobile, LEO satellite access networks have a unique set of link errors including bit corruption, handoff and limited connectivity. Unfortunately, most transport protocols are only designed to handle congestion–related errors common in wired networks. This inability to handle multiple kinds of errors results in severe degradation in effective throughput and energy saving, which are relevant metrics for a wireless and mobile environment. A recent study proposed a new transport protocol for satellites called STP that addresses many of the unique problems of satellite networks. There was, however, no explicit attempt to implement a differentiating error control …

Extended Hough Methodology In Geo-Spatial Image Exploitation, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Jihun Cha Aug 2003

Extended Hough Methodology In Geo-Spatial Image Exploitation, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Jihun Cha

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Hough transform theory provides a heuristically appealing approach toward finding lineal features in imagery. Unfortunately direct algorithmic implementation of its theory results in many practical problems. We provide two interlocking theoretical extensions to greatly enhances the Hough transform's ability to handle finite lineal features and allow directed search for parallel lines within the scene while balancing memory and computational complexity. Both extensions involve expansion of the Hough space concept to allow easier access to processed data for both dedicated silicon and general-purpose computer implementations.

Linear Feature Detection Of Rural Imagery Using Multiresolution Filters, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Rufus H. Cofer Aug 2003

Linear Feature Detection Of Rural Imagery Using Multiresolution Filters, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Rufus H. Cofer

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We detected roads in aerial imagery using a method based on lineal feature detection. Our method used the products of wavelet coefficients at several scales were to identify and locate lineal features. Using our approach effectively increased the size of the region we examined when looking for possible road pixels, and decreased the probability of false positive road pixels. Then, we used a shortest path algorithm to link road pixels to form road networks. Our approach restricted possible road network solutions based on the initial detection of road pixels. We found that our approach leads to an effective method for …

Bear: An Open-Source Virtual Secure Coprocessor Based On Tcpa, Rich Macdonald, Sean Smith, John Marchesini, Omen Wild

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper reports on our ongoing project to use TCPA to transform a desktop Linux machine into a virtual secure coprocessor: more powerful but less secure than higher-end devices. We use TCPA hardware and modified boot loaders to protect fairly static components, such as a trusted kernel; we use an enforcer module---configured as Linux Security Module---to protected more dynamic system components; we use an encrypted loopback filesystem to protect highly dynamic components. All our code is open source and available under GPL from http://enforcer.sourceforge.net/

A Reinforcement Learning Approach To Obtain Treatment Strategies In Sequential Medical Decision Problems, Radhika Poolla Aug 2003

A Reinforcement Learning Approach To Obtain Treatment Strategies In Sequential Medical Decision Problems, Radhika Poolla

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Medical decision problems are extremely complex owing to their dynamic nature, large number of variable factors, and the associated uncertainty. Decision support technology entered the medical field long after other areas such as the airline industry and the manufacturing industry. Yet, it is rapidly becoming an indispensable tool in medical decision making problems including the class of sequential decision problems. In these problems, physicians decide on a treatment plan that optimizes a benefit measure such as the treatment cost, and the quality of life of the patient. The last decade saw the emergence of many decision support applications in medicine. …

Maglifter: A Ground-Based Next Generation Reusable Launch Assist For A Low-Cost And Highly Reliable Space Access , Chan Ham, Jorge Flores, Robert Kluka, Robert Crabbs

Small Satellite Conference

Major difficulties in a space missions are the launch cost and the inability of using the launch vehicle consecutive times. A maglev launch system, Maglifter, uses magnetic fields to levitate and accelerate a vehicle along a track at speeds up to 600 [mph]. It is a feasible and revolutionary first stage propulsion system that gives an initial velocity and altitude, reducing dramatically on-board fuel. Furthermore, the Maglifter is inexpensive, costing less than an estimated $100 per full-scale launch, and environmentally clean, using only electrical power from ground sources. It also reduces turn-around time to next launch in quick succession space …

Phantom Energy: Dark Energy With W < − 1 Causes A Cosmic Doomsday, Robert R. Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski, Nevin N. Weinberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

We explore the consequences that follow if the dark energy is phantom energy, in which the sum of the pressure and energy density is negative. The positive phantom-energy density becomes infinite in finite time, overcoming all other forms of matter, such that the gravitational repulsion rapidly brings our brief epoch of cosmic structure to a close. The phantom energy rips apart the Milky Way, solar system, Earth, and ultimately the molecules, atoms, nuclei, and nucleons of which we are composed, before the death of the Universe in a “big rip.”

Practical Microsat Launch Systems: Economics And Technology, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane Aug 2003

Practical Microsat Launch Systems: Economics And Technology, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane

Small Satellite Conference

The problem of an affordable, responsive, and reliable microsat launch system (MLS) has bedeviled the small-satellite community, especially in the United States, for decades. Rides on dedicated vehicles may cost $15M or more, while shared space is hard to find and harder to fit with the schedules of microsat operators. Several efforts to build an MLS, generally focusing on cheap expendable launch vehicles (ELVs), have failed, as did the government.s much-touted Bantam launch vehicle effort in the 1990s. Today, there are several options, both reusable and expendable, in development, as government agencies and corporations respond to the growing interest in …
