Performance Standards: Utility For Different Uses Of Assessments, Robert L. Linn
Performance Standards: Utility For Different Uses Of Assessments, Robert L. Linn
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Performance standards are arguably one of the most controversial topics in educational measurement. There are uses of assessments such as licensure and certification where performance standards are essential. There are many other uses, however, where performance standards have been mandated or become the preferred method of reporting assessment results where the standards are not essential to the use. ...

Successful Field Pea Harvesting, Glen Riethmuller, Ian Pritchard
Successful Field Pea Harvesting, Glen Riethmuller, Ian Pritchard
Bulletins 4000 -
Many thousands of hectares of field peas are harvested trouble free each year. Growers experience together with recent machinery innovations and modifications have solved the majority of harvesting difficulties. Optimum harvesting conditions are in a crop of uniform density on a level soil surface with the machine either working into or across the direction that the crop has been laid by the wind.
To make harvest easier the receival standard for moisture in pulses has been lifted to 14 per cent, which allows harvest to begin sooner when the crop is the range of 14 to 15 per cent moisture. …
The Challenges Of Case Design Integration In The Telecommunication Application Domain, Luiz Fernando Capretz
The Challenges Of Case Design Integration In The Telecommunication Application Domain, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
The magnitude of the problems facing the telecommunication software industry is presently at a point at which software engineers should become deeply involved. This paper presents a research project on advanced telecommunication technology carried out in Europe, called BOOST (Broadband Object-Oriented Service Technology). The project involved cooperative work among telecommunication companies, research centres and universities from several countries. The challenges to integrate CASE tools to support software development within the telecommunication application domain are discussed. A software process model that encourages component reusability, named the X model, is described as part of a software life cycle model for the telecommunication …

Dynamic Traffic Grooming Algorithms For Reconfigurable Sonet Over Wdm Networks, Shu Zhang, Byrav Ramamurthy
Dynamic Traffic Grooming Algorithms For Reconfigurable Sonet Over Wdm Networks, Shu Zhang, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
The emergence of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology provides the capability for increasing the bandwidth of synchronous optical network (SONET) rings by grooming low-speed traffic streams onto different high-speed wavelength channels. Since the cost of SONET add–drop multiplexers (SADM) at each node dominates the total cost of these networks, how to assign the wavelength, groom the traffic, and bypass the traffic through the intermediate nodes has received a lot of attention from researchers recently. Moreover, the traffic pattern of the optical network changes from time to time. How to develop dynamic reconfiguration algorithms for traffic grooming is an important issue. In …

Modeling And Control Of Vinyl Chloride In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, M Beardsley, Craig D. Adams
Modeling And Control Of Vinyl Chloride In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, M Beardsley, Craig D. Adams
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
In water distribution systems containing PVC pipe manufactured in the “early era” (prior to 1977), vinyl chloride can leach into drinking water resulting in vinyl chloride concentrations exceeding the 2 μg⋅L−1 maximum contaminant level. Field testing of dead-end segments of water distribution systems consisting of early-era PVC pipe was conducted to examine their initial intrapipe vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) concentrations based on a Fickian-diffusion-based leaching model. The experiments showed a wide range of VCM concentrations within early-era PVC pipe ranging from less than 50 to more than 600 mg⋅kg−1. Based on the diffusion modeling approach, a protocol was designed that …

Detecting Patterns Of Fraudulent Behavior In Forensic Accounting, Boris Kovalerchuk, Evgenii Vityaev
Detecting Patterns Of Fraudulent Behavior In Forensic Accounting, Boris Kovalerchuk, Evgenii Vityaev
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Often evidence from a single case does not reveal any suspicious patterns to aid investigations in forensic accounting and other forensic fields. In contrast, correlation of sets of evidence from several cases with suitable background knowledge may reveal suspicious patterns. Link Discovery (LD) has recently emerged as a promising new area for such tasks. Currently LD mostly relies on deterministic graphical techniques. Other relevant techniques are Bayesian probabilistic and causal networks. These techniques need further development to handle rare events. This paper combines first-order logic (FOL) and probabilistic semantic inference (PSI) to address this challenge. Previous research has shown this …
Identification And Pid Control Of Time-Delayed Processes, Tony Kealy
Identification And Pid Control Of Time-Delayed Processes, Tony Kealy
Masters
This research was conducted primarily to investigate a selection of known methods for the identification of a mathematical model for processes with an inherent time delay, and subsequently, use the parameters of the identified model to regulate the processes via the PI/PID control strategy. The research examines the level of difficulty in performing or sanctioning different system identification methods in order to re-tune the controller. The process model identification methods are carried out on both simulated and real processes in the first part of the research. The selected parametric identification methods are chosen because they encompass open- and closed- loop …
A Full-Wave Investigation Of The Use Of A 'Cancellation Factor' In Gw-Airglow Interaction Studies, Yonghui Yu
A Full-Wave Investigation Of The Use Of A 'Cancellation Factor' In Gw-Airglow Interaction Studies, Yonghui Yu
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) perturb minor species involved in the chemical reactions of airglow emissions in the mesopause region of the earth's atmosphere. The so-called 'Cancellation Factor' (CF) is defined as a transfer function relating the amplitude of airglow brightness fluctuation to the amplitude of GW-induced fluctuation in temperature [Swenson and Gardner, 1998]. This transfer factor can be used to determine GW fluxes and the forcing effects of GWs on the mean state through airglow observations, because GW fluxes are proportional to the square of GW amplitude.
Numerical models [Walterscheid et al., 1987; Schubert et al., 1991] have previously shown …

Autonomous Vehicle Technologies For Small Fixed Wing Uavs, Derek B. Kingston, Randal Beard, Timothy Mclain, Michael Larsen, Wei Ren
Autonomous Vehicle Technologies For Small Fixed Wing Uavs, Derek B. Kingston, Randal Beard, Timothy Mclain, Michael Larsen, Wei Ren
Faculty Publications
Autonomous unmanned air vehicle flight control systems require robust path generation to account for terrain obstructions, weather, and moving threats such as radar, jammers, and unfriendly aircraft. In this paper, we outline a feasible, hierarchal approach for real-time motion planning of small autonomous fixed-wing UAVs. The approach divides the trajectory generation into four tasks: waypoint path planning, dynamic trajectory smoothing, trajectory tracking, and low-level autopilot compensation. The waypoint path planner determines the vehicle's route without regard for the dynamic constraints of the vehicle. This results in a significant reduction in the path search space, enabling the generation of complicated paths …
Interactive Level-Set Smoothing For Photo Editing, Thomas C. Howard, Bryan S. Morse
Interactive Level-Set Smoothing For Photo Editing, Thomas C. Howard, Bryan S. Morse
Faculty Publications
This paper presents an interactive image-smoothing tool based on properties and manipulation of image level sets. This tool uses PDE-based level-set smoothing to preserve edge sharpness while smoothing noise and jagged contours. Unlike existing approaches using PDEs, the duration and areas of application are controlled interactively with immediate feedback to the user. Interaction issues are addressed, and parameters for adjusting the PDE are automatically estimated based on image characteristics.
Dynamic Sociometry In Particle Swarm Optimization, Mark Richards, Dan A. Ventura
Dynamic Sociometry In Particle Swarm Optimization, Mark Richards, Dan A. Ventura
Faculty Publications
The performance of Particle Swarm Optimization is greatly affected by the size and sociometry of the swarm. This research proposes a dynamic sociometry, which is shown to be more effective on some problems than the standard star and ring sociometries. The performance of various combinations of swarm size and sociometry on six different test functions is qualitatively analyzed.

Public And Private Education: Conceptualizing The Distinction, Charles E. Bidwell, Robert Dreeben
Public And Private Education: Conceptualizing The Distinction, Charles E. Bidwell, Robert Dreeben
Journal of Catholic Education
Common wisdom and public discourse seem to suggest that there are two types of schools, private and public. Policy debates, media outlets, and comparisons of outcomes on standardized tests and interscholastic athletic competitions make use of the distinction. This essay argues that while such a distinction can be helpful, it also tends to obscure differences in the social organization of schools. Employing a sociological analysis and providing a historical overview of educational developments, the authors focus on centralization versus decentralization of school controls and discuss the ramifications of a broad versus a narrow market niche for schools.
