Positive Learning Activities In A Caring Environment: A Study Of A Student Advisory Program, Wanda Youngblood Lee

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation focused on the study of a teacher-student advisory program for 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students at Oak Hill Middle School in Milledgeville, Georgia. The population that was targeted for study was middle school students who were at risk of failure. Teachers were assigned an advisory class of 12 to 15 students at a specific grade level and mentored these students daily for a 40-minute period throughout the 2002-2003 school year.

Advisors and administrators, who were knowledgeable of the developmental characteristics of adolescents, worked together to review and select activities and materials for use during the advisory period. …

Improving Third-Grade Writing Scores Through Training On The Georgia Assessment Rubric, Ruth G. Summerlin Jan 2003

Improving Third-Grade Writing Scores Through Training On The Georgia Assessment Rubric, Ruth G. Summerlin

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to determine whether teacher training would result in a 60% inter-rater reliability among 14 third-grade teachers at Bascomb Elementary School during the 2002-2003 school year. The State of Georgia Writing Assessment for Grade 3 contains developmental scoring guidelines for six stages of writing using content, personal expression, and surface features as indicators of stage development.

The writer hypothesized that a professional development program would enhance teacher knowledge of the State of Georgia Writing Rubric, allowing these teachers to assess accurately and therefore more effectively teach content related to the rubric. The researcher expected that the …

Evaluation Of Programs To Raise Student Achievement For Ninth-Grade Students At Mauldin High School, Tracy Hall Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Programs To Raise Student Achievement For Ninth-Grade Students At Mauldin High School, Tracy Hall

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to evaluate 2 programs aimed at increasing student achievement at Mauldin High School (MHS), a suburban high school with a population of 1,850 students in Grades 9-12. The focus of the study was to provide formative and summative feedback using the Kremper and Achilles (1979) program evaluation outline. Two research questions addressed English I failure rates that were reduced through a freshman academy for 1st time 9th graders and remediation for repeat 9th graders.

A review of the literature concerning 9th-grade challenges effecting on student achievement from the transition to high school reflects the need …

Improving The Interest And Achievement Levels Of Students In Science By The Introduction Of Amateur Radio In The Classroom, Charles Lowery Jan 2003

Improving The Interest And Achievement Levels Of Students In Science By The Introduction Of Amateur Radio In The Classroom, Charles Lowery

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to provide supplemental educational opportunities to students in the Earth Science Curriculum by using an amateur radio station in the classroom during the 2001-2002 school year. Associated curriculum materials were introduced to enhance interest in the science curriculum. Materials to demonstrate many complex concepts were nonexistent in the standard Earth Science classroom in Halifax County, Virginia. The classroom teacher’s knowledge of the available material was insufficient without supplemental exposure and training. The researcher gathered materials from various sources and developed resources to fill this void.

Planned solution strategies included the development of subject area lesson …

Can Lightspan Playstations Improve Academic Performance Of A Set Of Low-Performing Seventh-Grade Students?, Mary E. Ashley-Livingston Jan 2003

Can Lightspan Playstations Improve Academic Performance Of A Set Of Low-Performing Seventh-Grade Students?, Mary E. Ashley-Livingston

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation describes a program for motivating students in order to improve their academic performance as measured by the state-mandated test, the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT). The targeted population was 40 7th-grade low-performing students.

Probable cause data were gathered and analyzed. These data indicated that some factors were lack of sustained professional development for teachers, parents not being involved in the education of their children, administrators and teachers not using data to help drive instruction, administrators being cognizant of class size, and teachers not using best practices to teach reading and mathematics.

An intervention strategy was planned. The …

Analysis Of A Retention Program For At-Risk Students In A Rural High School, Mary Eleanor R. Webb Jan 2003

Analysis Of A Retention Program For At-Risk Students In A Rural High School, Mary Eleanor R. Webb

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation focused on strategies to assist staff with the retention of students in a rural high school setting. The ideal retention program incorporates a focused learning environment, an extensive literacy program, and improved scheduling. At Bethel-Tate High School, the program was called Triumph Trilogy. All at-risk 9th-grade students were identified and then assigned at-risk “points” based on their identified needs. The 25 students with the most at-risk points were assigned to a Freshman Academy.

The study used a multiple-focus approach. Evaluations of terminal objectives were obtained through student survey responses and qualitative information. The results indicated that the …

Ability-Based Block Scheduling For At-Risk Special Education Students In Foster Care, Kevin Jamison Jan 2003

Ability-Based Block Scheduling For At-Risk Special Education Students In Foster Care, Kevin Jamison

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The problem, addressed by this applied dissertation was 43 at-risk special education students who lived in foster care and functioned below grade level in reading and mathematics in comparison to same age peers despite exposure to various reading and mathematics interventions in self-contained classroom settings. These students also had varying levels of intellectual ability. Specifically, the problem was that pre-test (baseline) measures indicated 70% of students scored at or below the 5.4 grade level in reading and 70% of students below this level were in grades 8 through 11. In terms of mathematics, 60% of students were functioning at or …

Revising Professional Development To Prepare Teachers For The Early Childhood Education Classroom, Irma J. Ellington Jan 2003

Revising Professional Development To Prepare Teachers For The Early Childhood Education Classroom, Irma J. Ellington

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to develop a professional development program for teachers in an early childhood education setting. A review of teacher qualifications from 1998-2002 revealed that the percentage of teachers employed with a degree in early childhood education had decreased from 60% to 20%. Because the teachers' educational qualifications were in other areas, additional staff training was needed to ensure that, (1) they understood how young children learn, and (2) they would be able to implement effectively a curriculum designed for students ages 3-5 years old.

Pre- and post study questionnaires were given to participants, to obtain input …
