Microburst Recovery For Jet Transport Aircraft: A Comparison Between Constant And Variable Pitch Guidance Trajectories, Mark Cadmus
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The purpose of this research was to compare, in a simulator, the safety of a variable pitch strategy with the established constant pitch strategy in transitioning through a microburst during an abort maneuver in the approach to landing phase of flight. In numerous mathematical and computer studies of microburst penetrations, the variable pitch strategy provided a greater recovery altitude than the constant pitch strategy. A Boeing 737 level C aircraft simulator was employed to evaluate these findings in a dynamic environment. Three appropriately qualified subjects piloted 35 flights through a microburst, while computer generated data were collected. "Safety", defined as …

Scientific Collaboratories In Higher Education: Exploring Learning Style Preferences And Perceptions Of Technology, Diane H. Sonnenwald, Bin Li
Scientific Collaboratories In Higher Education: Exploring Learning Style Preferences And Perceptions Of Technology, Diane H. Sonnenwald, Bin Li
Faculty Publications
Scientific collaboratories hold the promise of providing students access to specialized scientific instruments, data and experts, enabling learning opportunities perhaps otherwise not available. However, evaluation of scientific collaboratories in higher education has lagged behind their development. We conducted a repeated-measures study that provided data regarding social interaction learning styles and perceptions of a scientific collaboratory system from 40 university science students working face-to-face and remotely. Students with a strong competitive learning style preference or who worked with a student with a strong competitive learning style reported a slightly more positive perception of the relative advantage, compatibility and complexity of the …
Well Posed Constraint-Preserving Boundary Conditions For The Linearized Einstein Equations, Gioel Calabrese, Jorge Pullin, Oscar Reula, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio
Well Posed Constraint-Preserving Boundary Conditions For The Linearized Einstein Equations, Gioel Calabrese, Jorge Pullin, Oscar Reula, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio
Faculty Publications
In this paper we address the problem of specifying boundary conditions for Einstein's equations when linearized around Minkowski space using the generalized Einstein-Christoffel symmetric hyperbolic system of evolution equations. The boundary conditions we work out guarantee that the constraints are satisfied provided they are satisfied on the initial slice and ensures a well posed initial-boundary value formulation. We consider the case of a manifold with a non-smooth boundary, as is the usual case of the cubic boxes commonly used in numerical relativity. The techniques discussed should be applicable to more general cases, as linearizations around more complicated backgrounds, and may …

The Aging Human Neuromuscular System Expresses Less Certainty For Selecting Joint Kinematics During Gait, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou
The Aging Human Neuromuscular System Expresses Less Certainty For Selecting Joint Kinematics During Gait, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou
Journal Articles
This investigation quantitatively characterized the certainty of the aging neuromuscular system in selecting a joint range of motion during gait based on the statistical concept of entropy. Elderly and young control groups walked on a treadmill at a self-selected pace. Joint angles were calculated for the ankle, knee and hip. We hypothesized that the aging group would exhibit less certainty in selecting a joint range of motion during gait. Our results supported this hypothesis, and indicated that aged individuals demonstrated statistically less certainty for the knee (16.8%) and hip (24.6%). We suggest that neurophysiological changes associated with aging may result …
Aggregated Causal Maps: An Approach To Elicit And Aggregate The Knowledge Of Multiple Experts, S. Nadkarni, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Aggregated Causal Maps: An Approach To Elicit And Aggregate The Knowledge Of Multiple Experts, S. Nadkarni, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a systematic procedure to elicit and aggregate the knowledge of multiple individual experts and represent it in the form of an Aggregated Causal Map (ACM). This procedure differs from existing methods in two ways. First, unlike other methods, this method does not rely on group interaction in eliciting knowledge of multiple experts, and, therefore, is not fraught with biases associated with group dynamics. Second, this method uses both the idiographic and nomothetic approaches while existing methods focus on nomothetic approaches to knowledge elicitation. We draw on the strengths of both approaches by using the idiographic approach to …
Subtalar And Knee Joint Interaction During Running At Various Stride Lengths, Nikolaos Stergiou, Barry T. Bates, Max J. Kurz
Subtalar And Knee Joint Interaction During Running At Various Stride Lengths, Nikolaos Stergiou, Barry T. Bates, Max J. Kurz
Journal Articles
Background: It has been suggested that during running proper coordination between subtalar pronation/supination and knee flexion/extension via tibial rotation is important to attenuate ground reaction impact forces (GRIF). Lack of coordination over time may produce a wide range of injuries. It was hypothesized that increasing stride length would result in higher GRIF. It was also hypothesized that alterations in stride length would result in changes of the subtalar/knee coordination.
Methods: Six subjects ran under three different stride lengths (normal stride, understride and overstride) at their self-selected pace. Sagittal, rear view kinematic data and GRIF kinetic data were collected. The subtalar/knee …

On Mining Group Patterns Of Mobile Users, Yida Wang, Ee Peng Lim, San-Yih Hwang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we present a group pattern mining approach to derive the grouping information of mobile device users based on the spatio-temporal distances among them. Group patterns of users are determined by a distance threshold and a minimum duration. To discover group patterns, we propose the AGP and VG-growth algorithms that are derived from the Apriori and FP-growth algorithms respectively. We further evaluate the efficiencies of these two algorithms using synthetically generated user movement data.

Benchmarking The Operational Efficiency Of Major U.S. Trucking Firms Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Hokey Min, Seong Jong Joo
Journal of Transportation Management
In an era of downsizing and financial cutbacks, the operational efficiency of trucking firms dictates their competitiveness and survival. In an effort to help trucking firms develop a winning formula in the fiercely competitive logistics industry, this research aims to develop a meaningful set of benchmarks that will set the tone for best practices. In particular, a data envelopment analysis (DEA) is described. DEA has proven to be useful for measuring the operational efficiency of various profit or non-profit organizations. Using the examples of major trucking businesses in the United States, the usefulness of data envelopment analysis for the continuous …

Continuity Of Semantic Operators In Logic Programming And Their Approximation By Artificial Neural Networks, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda
Continuity Of Semantic Operators In Logic Programming And Their Approximation By Artificial Neural Networks, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
One approach to integrating first-order logic programming and neural network systems employs the approximation of semantic operators by feedforward networks. For this purpose, it is necessary to view these semantic operators as continuous functions on the reals. This can be accomplished by endowing the space of all interpretations of a logic program with topologies obtained from suitable embeddings. We will present such topologies which arise naturally out of the theory of logic programming, discuss continuity issues of several well-known semantic operators, and derive some results concerning the approximation of these operators by feedforward neural networks.

Scaffolding Critical Reflection In Online Discussions: Helping Prospective Teachers Think Deeply About Field Experiences In Urban Schools, Joan Whipp
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
A teacher educator uses the methodology of a design experiment to compare patterns and levels of reflection in two semesters of her students’ e-mail discussions about field experiences in urban schools. Analysis of discussion transcripts during the earlier semester revealed that higher levels of reflection were rare. With a number of changes in both the design and level of support for the discussions, students during the second semester were more inclined to write at higher levels of reflection. Important scaffolds for higher levels of reflection seemed to be tailored and general questioning from the instructor and peers, critical readings on …

Research has shown that application errors exist with variable–rate technology (VRT) systems. Consequently, using prescription maps for economic and agronomic analyses can generate misleading results. The intent of this article was to develop and validate a spatial data model for generating “as–applied” maps to support the advancement of precision agriculture practices. Previous research modified ASAE Standard S341.2 to include a 2–D matrix of collection pans to assess fixed–rate and variable–rate (VR) deposition of granular fertilizers and agricultural lime from a spinner disc spreader. The “as–applied” spatial data model uses GIS functionality to generate “as–applied” surfaces by merging distribution patterns and …
Exhibit Labels, When High-Tech Was Low-Tech: A Retrospective Look At Forward-Thinking Technologies, James Anthony Schnur
Exhibit Labels, When High-Tech Was Low-Tech: A Retrospective Look At Forward-Thinking Technologies, James Anthony Schnur
Library and Community-based Exhibits
Versions of this exhibit designed by Jim Schnur appeared in the Poynter Library in the late 1990s, though they tended to be smaller in scale. The label copy shown here came from the first display of the expanded version of the exhibit that Schnur installed on 30 September 2003 in multiple display cases. Various iterations of this exhibit have occurred since then, often taking place at the beginning of the fall semester as an "eye-catcher." The photographic images shown illustrate a version of the exhibit as it existed during late 2013 and early 2014 after installation during the fall 2013 …

Low-Energy Operators In Effective Theories, C Felline, Nirav P. Mehta, J Piekarewicz, James R. Shepard
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research
Modern effective-theory techniques are applied to the nuclear many-body problem. A novel approach is proposed for the renormalization of operators in a manner consistent with the construction of the effective potential. To test this approach, a one-dimensional, yet realistic, nucleon-nucleon potential is introduced. An effective potential is then constructed by tuning its parameters to reproduce the exact effective-range expansion and a variety of bare operators are renormalized in a fashion compatible with this construction. Predictions for the expectation values of these effective operators in the ground state reproduce the results of the exact theory with remarkable accuracy (at the 0.5% …
Libertarian Paternalism Is Not An Oxymoron, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard H. Thaler
Libertarian Paternalism Is Not An Oxymoron, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard H. Thaler
University of Chicago Law Review
The idea of libertarian paternalism might seem to be an oxymoron, but it is both possible and desirable for private and public institutions to influence behavior while also respecting freedom of choice. Often people's preferences are unclear and ill-formed, and their choices will inevitably be influenced by default rules, framing effects, and starting points. In these circumstances, a form of paternalism cannot be avoided. Equipped with an understanding of behavioral findings of bounded rationality and bounded self-control, libertarian paternalists should attempt to steer people's choices in welfare-promoting directions without eliminating freedom of choice. It is also possible to show how …
Grading The Government, Richard W. Parker
Grading The Government, Richard W. Parker
University of Chicago Law Review
For over a decade, scathing critiques of government have been fueled by a group of studies called "regulatory scorecards," which purport to show that the costs of many government regulations vastly outweigh their benefits. One widely cited study by John Morrall, an OMB economist, claims that government regulations cost up to $72 billion per life saved. Another study, co-authored by Bush's regulatory "czar," John Graham, claims that over 60,000 people lose their lives each year due to irrational government regulation. A third group of scorecards--compiled by Robert Hahn of the AEI-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies--claims that over half of …

Elemental Fractionation In Small Solar Energetic Particle Events, Penny L. Slocum, Joseph R. Dwyer
Elemental Fractionation In Small Solar Energetic Particle Events, Penny L. Slocum, Joseph R. Dwyer
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
Using the Solar Isotope Spectrometer on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), we have measured the 11.0-21.8 MeV nucleon-1 heavy (Z ≥ 6) element abundances of 39 small solar energetic particle (SEP) events that occurred between 1998 April 3 and 2002 February 26. Using He isotope data from the UltraLow-Energy Isotope Spectrometer on ACE, we have classified the events according to their 0.5-2.0 MeV nucleonˉ¹ ³He/⁴He ratios. We find that their average heavy-element composition is similar to that of either large gradual events or ³He-rich events, depending on their ³He/⁴He ratio. As seen in recent studies of small SEP events, we …

A Communications Modeling System For Swarm-Based Sensors, Brian A. Kadrovach
Theses and Dissertations
Today's information age has exploded the amount of data available to decision makers at all levels of the control hierarchy. The miniaturization and proliferation of sensor technology has enabled extensive detection and monitoring and advances in computational capabilities have provided for embedded data analysis and the generation of information from raw data. Additionally, with the miniaturization of mechanical systems it is possible to provide platforms for sensor suites that are capable of mobility and limited autonomy. Swarming or bio-emergent behavior problems, provides a robust scalable mechanism for organizing large numbers of mobile sensor platforms. However, the mobility dynamics of swarm …

Cooperative Control Simulation Validation Using Applied Probability Theory, Christopher S. Schulz
Theses and Dissertations
Several research simulations have been created to support development and refinement of teamed autonomous agents using decentralized cooperative control algorithms. Simulation is the necessary tool to evaluate the performance of decentralized cooperative control algorithms, however these simulations lack a method to validate their output. This research presents a method to validate the performance of a decentralized cooperative control simulation environment for an autonomous Wide Area Search Munition (WASM). Rigorous analytical methods for six wide area search and engagement scenarios involving Uniform, Normal, and Poisson distributions of N real targets and M false target objects are formulated to generate expected numbers …
