Optimization And Equilibrium Problems With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich Sep 2003

Optimization And Equilibrium Problems With Equilibrium Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns optimization and equilibrium problems with the so-called equilibrium constraints (MPEC and EPEC), which frequently appear in applications to operations research. These classes of problems can be naturally unified in the framework of multiobjective optimization with constraints governed by parametric variational systems (generalized equations, variational inequalities, complementarity problems, etc.). We focus on necessary conditions for optimal solutions to MPECs and EPECs under general assumptions in finite-dimensional spaces. Since such problems are intrinsically nonsmooth, we use advanced tools of generalized differentiation to study optimal solutions by methods of modern variational analysis. The general results obtained are concretized for special …

Using Departmental Surveys To Assess Computing Culture: Quantifying Gender Differences In The Classroom, Lisa Meeden, Doug Blank, Deepak Kumar Sep 2003

Using Departmental Surveys To Assess Computing Culture: Quantifying Gender Differences In The Classroom, Lisa Meeden, Doug Blank, Deepak Kumar

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Male and female students often hold different views of the culture within the same computer science department. These differences may, in part, account for why women are underrepresented in computer science. We found that surveying students about their views of our departments' environments was an important first step in evaluating the cultures of our own departments, in determining what issues needed to be addressed, and in determining how to address them. Our survey results revealed some problems in our classroom and lab environments, and showed that there are gender differences in students' perceptions of our departments. We describe a set …

Young People From Low-Ses Families And Participation In Higher Education: Evidence From Five Australian Cohorts, Sheldon Rothman Sep 2003

Young People From Low-Ses Families And Participation In Higher Education: Evidence From Five Australian Cohorts, Sheldon Rothman

LSAY Conference Papers

LSAY research has concentrated on pathways taken by young people and on relationships between outcomes and various background factors. Socioeconomic status (SES) has been one factor of interest, although there has been no consistent identification of SES across all reports, especially in light of the multidimensional nature of SES and components of occupation, education and wealth (Ainley et al., 1995). Of course, because these studies began before these young people entered the labour force, student SES is based on parent occupation and educational attainment. Two reports have examined participation in higher education among the Youth in Transition and LSAY cohorts, …

Photodissociation Of The Od Radical At 226 And 243 Nm, Dragana C. Radenovic, Andre J.A. Van Roij, Dmitri A. Chestakov, Andre T.J.B. Eppink, J J. Ter Meulen, David H. Parker, Mark P.J. Van Der Loo, Gerrit G. Groenenboom, Margaret E. Greenslade, Marsha I. Lester

Chemistry

The photodissociation dynamics of state selected OD radicals has been examined at 243 and 226 nm using velocity map imaging to probe the angle–speed distributions of theD(2S) and O(3P2) products. Both experiment and complementary first principle calculations demonstrate that photodissociation occurs by promotion of OD from high vibrational levels of the ground X 2Π state to the repulsive 1 2Σ− state.

Illinois River 2002 Pollutant Loads At Arkansas Highway 59 Bridge, Marc A. Nelson, Wade Cash

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Automatic water samplers and a U. S. Geological Survey gauging station were established in 1995 on the main stem of the Illinois River at the Arkansas Highway 59 Bridge. Since that time, continuous stage and discharge measurements and water quality sampling have been used to determine pollutant concentrations and loads in the Arkansas portion of the Illinois River. This report represents the results from the measurement and sampling by the Arkansas Water Resources Center -Water Quality Lab for January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002.

Faculty Articles

We present results derived from a wide field, sub-arcminute resolution VLA image of the Galactic Center region at 330 MHz (λ = 90 cm). With a resolution of ∼7″ × 12″ and an rms noise of 1.6 mJy beam−1, this image represents a significant increase in resolution and sensitivity over the previously published VLA image at this frequency (eg. LaRosa et al. 2000). The improvement in sensitivity has significantly increased the census of small diameter sources in the region, resulted in the detection of two new Non-Thermal Filaments (NTFs) and 18 new NTF candidates, and resulted in …

Context-Aware Semantic Association Ranking, Boanerges Aleman-Meza, Christian Halaschek-Wiener, I. Budak Arpinar, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Discovering complex and meaningful relationships, which we call Semantic Associations, is an important challenge. Just as ranking of documents is a critical component of today's search engines, ranking of relationships will be essential in tomorrow's semantic search engines that would support discovery and mining of the Semantic Web. Building upon our recent work on specifying types of Semantic Associations in RDF graphs, which are possible to create through semantic metadata extraction and annotation, we discuss a framework where ranking techniques can be used to identify more interesting and more relevant Semantic Associations. Our techniques utilize alternative ways of specifying the …

Supernova Reverse Shocks: Sic Growth And Isotopic Composition, Ethan A-N. Deneault, Donald D. Clayton, Alexander Heger Sep 2003

Supernova Reverse Shocks: Sic Growth And Isotopic Composition, Ethan A-N. Deneault, Donald D. Clayton, Alexander Heger

Publications

We present new mechanisms by which the isotopic compositions of X-type grains of presolar SiC are altered by reverse shocks in Type II supernovae. We address three epochs of reverse shocks: pressure wave from the H envelope near t ¼ 106 s, reverse shock from the presupernova wind near 108–109 s, and reverse shock from the interstellar medium near 1010 s. Using one-dimensional hydrodynamics we show that the first creates a dense shell of Si and C atoms near 106 s in which the SiC surely condenses. The second reverse shock causes precondensed grains to move rapidly forward through decelerated …

Improving Requirements Tracing Via Information Retrieval, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, James Osborne Sep 2003

Improving Requirements Tracing Via Information Retrieval, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, James Osborne

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents an approach for improving requirements tracing based on framing it as an information retrieval (IR) problem. Specifically, we focus on improving recall and precision in order to reduce the number of missed traceability links as well as to reduce the number of irrelevant potential links that an analyst has to examine when performing requirements tracing. Several IR algorithms were adapted and implemented to address this problem. We evaluated our algorithms by comparing their results and performance to those of a senior analyst who traced manually as well as with an existing requirements tracing tool. Initial results suggest …
