Problems? What Problems? We Have None At All: Qualitative Data Collection For Impact Assessment, Katie Wright

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Increasing interest in impact assessment of microfinance and other development interventions highlights the need to understand links between activities and outcomes in order that programs and services can be improved. This paper draws out the complexities of using prompting and open-ended questions in semistructured interviews and also considers entry points for field research. This is done with reference to a study of the impact of microfinance on women in poor areas of Cajamarca, Peru. Drawing on findings from over eighteen months of fieldwork, it examines the trials and pitfalls in question design and suggests guidelines for better practice.

Telling Miller's Tale, Glenn Harlan Reynolds Apr 2003

Telling Miller's Tale, Glenn Harlan Reynolds

Scholarly Works

The case of United States v. Miller, 307 U.S. 174 (1939), is often cited in gun-control arguments and arguments over the meaning of the Second Amendment. In this Article, we take a close look at Miller, and the arguments made before the Supreme Court. When the decision is read closely and the arguments available (and not available) to the Court are taken into account, the decision is best understood as leaving open the opportunity for courts to adopt the Standard Model reading of the Second Amendment. What Miller plainly does not do is deny that an individual's right to keep …

The Effects Of Instruction Utilizing The Arts On The Academic Achievement Of Fourth-Grade Students, Elizabeth Fallin Manning Apr 2003

The Effects Of Instruction Utilizing The Arts On The Academic Achievement Of Fourth-Grade Students, Elizabeth Fallin Manning

Doctoral Dissertations

In this day of accountability, members of state government agencies are looking for ways to increase student achievement, especially in the area of high stakes testing. Louisiana's accountability program has yielded state curriculum standards which identify the content that should be taught by specific grade levels. Teachers are now charged with the responsibility of finding methods to teach these standards. With all of the attention to these academic standards, what is the role of the arts? The Louisiana Institute for Education in the Arts (LAIEA) suggests that the arts are the tools with which to teach these academic standards. This …

The Revival Of "Privileges Or Immunities" And The Controversy Over State Bar Admission Requirements: The Makings Of A Future Constitutional Dilemma?, Wilson Pasley Apr 2003

The Revival Of "Privileges Or Immunities" And The Controversy Over State Bar Admission Requirements: The Makings Of A Future Constitutional Dilemma?, Wilson Pasley

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Supreme Court's 1999 decision in Saenz v. Roe relied upon the long ignored Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which had laid dormant since the Slaughter-House Cases of more than a century ago. The Saenz decision sparked considerable debate as to the meaning of the Privileges or Immunities Clause and caused speculation as to the statutes vulnerable to a constitutional challenge under the Clause. This Note examines the potential impact of the Privileges or Immunities Clause on state bar admission requirements and other restrictions on the practice of law. It concludes that the Clause does not create …

Auto-Ethnography As A Communicative And Therapeutic Means Of Addressing Eating Disorders, Julie Irvin Apr 2003

Auto-Ethnography As A Communicative And Therapeutic Means Of Addressing Eating Disorders, Julie Irvin

Honors Theses

Under the premise that human beings are natural storytellers, narratives are an essential part of our lives and the way we shape and form our stories impacts our daily activities. When life struggles transpire, we typically make sense of our world through narratives, which is why therapists sometimes draw upon narrative therapy. By exploring different types of narratives-the basic genre of a life-story, testimonio, literary narrative, ethnography, and auto-ethnography-the mode that presents itself as a viable means of intrapersonal communication, possibly producing change, is auto-ethnography. Examining the need for narrative within the conditions of eating disorders, the question arises as …

Levitz Furniture Co.: The End Of Celanese And The Good-Faith Doubt Standard For Withdrawing Recognition Of Incumbent Unions, Sarah Pawlicki

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In 1998, the Supreme Court upheld the NLRB's unitary good-faith doubt standard in Allentown Mack v. NLRB for withdrawing recognition of an incumbent union, polling employees, or an employer petition for decertification. The Court's holding gave the NLRB broad deference as an administrative agency to develop its rules and standards. At the same time, the Court rebuked the NLRB for its use of the term "good-faith" when in fact, the NLRB required much more. In response, the NLRB issued its decision in Levitz Furniture Company. Levitz was the NLRB's opportunity to change the rule from Celanese, which for …

Innovating Superheroes, Alvise Mattozzi Apr 2003

Innovating Superheroes, Alvise Mattozzi

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Introduction]

Superhero comics have changed. They have passed through a Golden Age and Silver Age, they have been transformed, cancelled, revived, killed, deconstructed, reconstructed, revisited, etc. My aim is to account for part of these changes and show how superhero comics have been innovated. In order to track these changes I chose to compare different versions of a few DC Comics series, such as Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, Shade, that had been cancelled and then revived and are known to have introduced relevant changes between the earliest and the subsequent versions.

Before tackling the series mentioned, I …

Time Wounds All Heels: Duncan, Ballet, And Bataille, Joanne Pearson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Any study of the birth of modern dance draws upon the work of Isadora Duncan and for too long her dance has been placed in opposition to ballet. Even today the contemporary Duncan dancer reifies the image of Duncan as natural, harmonious, unique and rounded [1]. This opposition of free dance versus ballet presents a two-dimensional portrait of past representations of femininity. I aim to re-think Duncan's disdain for the pointe shoe and her belief that barefoot dancing would encourage a liberated movement that would in turn free woman from her disgraceful position in dance and …
