The U.S. Health Workforce: Definitions, Dollars, And Dilemmas, Karen Matherlee
The U.S. Health Workforce: Definitions, Dollars, And Dilemmas, Karen Matherlee
National Health Policy Forum
This background paper provides a comprehensive view of the structure of the health workforce. It explores public and private insurance coverage and payment policies, as well as discretionary grant programs, that govern it. The paper also looks at health workforce concerns: supplies of certain types of physicians, health workforce mix, challenges from complementary and alternative medicine, shortages of nurses and pharmacists (and some other practitioners), maldistribution issues, and lack of diversity in response to demographic changes. It presents proposals that are on the table to reform the health workforce, at a time when it is demanding greater attention from health …

Designing Interactive Multimedia For The Anthropology Exhibit Gallery, Kelley Curtis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Computer-based multimedia offer an alternative means of providing instruction to learners in two primary, yet disparate, ways. Multimedia can be used to convey information to learners, or alternatively, learners can make use of multimedia to impart information. One example of the use of multimedia technologies at the University of South Florida is an interactive computer kiosk installed in the Anthropology Exhibit Gallery. The development of the educational program featured on the kiosk's touchscreen computer is the subject of this paper.
The purpose of the kiosk's program was twofold: 1) to introduce the field of anthropology to university students and the …

Parental Involvement As A Tool To Lower Repeat Suspension Offenses, Steven W. Price
Parental Involvement As A Tool To Lower Repeat Suspension Offenses, Steven W. Price
Theses and Dissertations
Parental involvement in education has been sought after for decades. The purpose of this study was to involve parents in the discipline process and thereby reduce repeat discipline offense. The intern offered the opportunity for involvement to the parents of tenth grade students who received their first out-of-school suspension. The study took place during the first semester of the 2002- 2003 school year. Parents were asked to participate in this study by answering a short survey and by discussing the incident with their child at home.
The sample population included all of the tenth grade students. A limited sample included …

Charitable Choice In Florida: The Politics, Ethics And Implications Of Social Policy, Angela Gomez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation research is a study of the anthropology of policy with welfare reform in general and charitable choice in particular as its focus. The study begins with the notion that policies work as instruments of governance and consequently have social and political implications. These policies are examined by exploring the manner in which Catholic Charities and policy makers in Florida are responding to the charitable choice mandate and how their views are shaping local policies.
The study is framed within anthropological principles pertaining to economic, humanistic and philosophical tenets. The study provides a historical background of poverty, the development …

Providing Central And East European Engineering Students With International Experience, Radu Chisleag
Providing Central And East European Engineering Students With International Experience, Radu Chisleag
Enhancement of the Global Perspective for Engineering Students by Providing an International Experience
Historically, the academic life in Romania as well as in the other Central and East European countries had strong connections with Western Europe and some connections with the rest of the world. These connections were almost entirely forbidden by the communist soviet type political power imposed to these countries, following the Second World War. The 1989 anticommunist revolution in Central and East Europe opened the way for re-establishing contacts with the western World, offering Romanians and particularly to the students of the "POLITEHNICA" University in Bucharest, opportunities to get International Experience. Due, mainly, to the activity of some promoters, without …

Assessing Classification Confidence Using A Weighted Exponential Based Technique With The Learn++ Incremental Learning Algorithm, Jeffrey T. Byorick
Assessing Classification Confidence Using A Weighted Exponential Based Technique With The Learn++ Incremental Learning Algorithm, Jeffrey T. Byorick
Theses and Dissertations
Pattern recognition problems span a broad range of applications, where each application has its own tolerance on classification error. The varying levels of risk associated with many pattern recognition applications indicate the need for a versatile algorithm with the ability to measure its own reliability. In this work, the supervised incremental learning algorithm Learn++ [1, 2], which exploits the synergistic power of an ensemble of classifiers, is further developed to add the capability of assessing its own confidence. Estimation of the true generalization performance of the classifier as well as the confidences on classification of individual data instances is investigated …

Pipe Dreams And Primitivism: Eugene O'Neill And The Rhetoric Of Ethnicity, Donald P. Gagnon
Pipe Dreams And Primitivism: Eugene O'Neill And The Rhetoric Of Ethnicity, Donald P. Gagnon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Eugene O'Neill included within his vision of humanity a series of complex, emotionally and psychologically developed black characters. Despite critical controversy over his methods or effectiveness, from his eerily silent mulatto in "Thirst" through the grandiose incarnation of The Emperor Jones and the everyman of Joe Mott and The Iceman Cometh, O'Neill created characters of African descent that thrilled and infuriated critics and audiences alike.
A closer exploration of the issues involved in his portrayal of ethnically identified characters seems necessary, an exploration that does not limit itself to an interrogation of ethnicity per se in O'Neill's plays, but …
