Refining The Metaphor In Lessing's "Erziehung Des Menschengeschlechts", Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Sep 2003

Refining The Metaphor In Lessing's "Erziehung Des Menschengeschlechts", Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Lessing's Erziehung des Menschengeschlechts (EdM) first appeared, albeit in incomplete form, appended to the fourth of Lessing's Gegensätze zu Reimarus in 1777. It constitutes part of Lessing's response to the rationalistic polemic Lessing's "Ungenannter," Hermann Samuel Reimarus, directed against many of the fundamental dogmas of orthodox Christianity, and seeks to define a position which preserves the authority of reason, while at the same time defining a legitimate historical role for revealed religion. I wish to investigate here the hermeneutical model Lessing puts forward in the EdM in the context of his response to Reimarus. We will see that while Lessing …

Initial Overview Of The Linguistic Diversity Of Refugee Communities In Cairo, Daniele Calvani Sep 2003

Initial Overview Of The Linguistic Diversity Of Refugee Communities In Cairo, Daniele Calvani

Faculty Journal Articles

Cairo has become home to a high number of refugees, who – no matter how long they stay in the Egyptian capital – are very likely to remain as part of distinct immigrant communities. Their members’ country of origin, cultural and language background form the basis of cohesion. Their presence contributes to making Cairo linguistically dynamic. Since the significance of this has so far been greatly underestimated, there is need for research on language diversity in Cairo. This report partially fulfils this need, in that it begins to highlight the diversity of languages spoken by refugees in Cairo and alerts …

Rethinking Asymmetric Threats, Stephen J. Blank Dr. Sep 2003

Rethinking Asymmetric Threats, Stephen J. Blank Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

For several years U.S. policymakers, officials, and writers on defense have employed the terms "asymmetric" or "asymmetry" to characterize everything from the nature of the threats we face to the nature of war and beyond. The author challenges the utility of using those terms to characterize the threats we face, one element of the broader debate over the nature of war, U.S. strategy, and the threats confronting us. As a work of critique, it aims to make an important contribution to the threat debate. A correct assessment of the nature of the threat environment is essential to any sound defense …

Holy Fools, Secular Saints, And Illiterate Saviors In American Literature And Popular Culture, Dana Heller Sep 2003

Holy Fools, Secular Saints, And Illiterate Saviors In American Literature And Popular Culture, Dana Heller

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Holy Fools, Secular Saints, and Illiterate Saviors in American Literature and Popular Culture," Dana Heller identifies and analyzes characteristics of the holy fool figure in American literature and culture. Heller defines the holy fool, or divine idiot, as a figure central to U.S. myths of nation. One encounters such figures in American literature as well as in American folklore, popular culture, and mass media. In American culture, the Divine Idiot is a hybrid form which grows out of the crossings of numerous literary and historical currents, both secular and non-secular. This unwieldy hybridity -- the fact that …

Symbolism, Popular Drama, And Politics And Art In Belgium, 1886-1910, Joan Gross Sep 2003

Symbolism, Popular Drama, And Politics And Art In Belgium, 1886-1910, Joan Gross

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Symbolism, Popular Drama, and Politics and Arts in Belgium, 1886-1910," Joan Gross examines what effects the reign of terror in the Congo and the silence that masked it might have had on popular performance traditions and literary practices in Belgium. Gross examines a popular puppet play by Léopold Leloup and an essay by Maurice Maeterlinck, both of which are called The Massacre of the Innocents. The third text she explores is a parliamentary speech given by Émile Vandervelde in 1903 in which he protested brutal practices in the Congo. Gross explores the interconnections between these three disparate …

Aggregated Causal Maps: An Approach To Elicit And Aggregate The Knowledge Of Multiple Experts, S. Nadkarni, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a systematic procedure to elicit and aggregate the knowledge of multiple individual experts and represent it in the form of an Aggregated Causal Map (ACM). This procedure differs from existing methods in two ways. First, unlike other methods, this method does not rely on group interaction in eliciting knowledge of multiple experts, and, therefore, is not fraught with biases associated with group dynamics. Second, this method uses both the idiographic and nomothetic approaches while existing methods focus on nomothetic approaches to knowledge elicitation. We draw on the strengths of both approaches by using the idiographic approach to …

The Impact Of Cultural Values On Email Acceptance : Evidence From The Prc, Linjun Huang Sep 2003

The Impact Of Cultural Values On Email Acceptance : Evidence From The Prc, Linjun Huang

Lingnan Theses

Global deployment in information technology (IT) requires understandings of the cultural constraints in technology acceptance and usage behavior. Prior research indicates that the salient technology acceptance models may not be applicable to all cultures since empirical support was mainly obtained from North America. Cultural impact on user acceptance is still at the early stage of research. There has been little research done on technology acceptance and usage behavior in the context of China, which exhibits distinctive cultural differences from countries in North America. The purpose of this thesis is to test the cross-cultural applicability of Technology Acceptance Model in the …

Interpretation And Re-Creation : English Translations Of Poetry In The Sanguo Zhi Yanyi, Pui Shan Tai

Lingnan Theses

This thesis is a textual and contextual study of English renditions of poetry in Luo Guanzhong’s Sanguo zhi yanyi, in terms of their artistic approach and their bearing on the artistic functions which poetry fulfills in the novel. There are several English renditions of the Sanguo zhi yanyi in full or in part, including two full translations by Charles H. Brewit-Taylor and Moss Roberts. While the two full translations form the focus of the study, Roberts’s abridged version is also included. Published fifteen years before the full rendition by the same translator, the abridged version serves every now and then …

意识形态、诗学与文学翻译选择规范 : 20世纪50-80年代中国的(后)现代主义文学翻译研究, Mingjian Zha Sep 2003

意识形态、诗学与文学翻译选择规范 : 20世纪50-80年代中国的(后)现代主义文学翻译研究, Mingjian Zha

Lingnan Theses

A Critical Reconstruction Of Care-In-Action, Barbara Korth Sep 2003

A Critical Reconstruction Of Care-In-Action, Barbara Korth

The Qualitative Report

This paper uses the findings of a critical ethnography studying the interactions of adult colleagues (Korth, 1998) to propose a critical approach to care theory and research. The argument proceeds from Jaggar's (1995) critique of the scholarship on care. Her criticism voices concerns regarding the lack of attention to the justificatory potential of care research/theory and the over-dependence on particularities. This paper provides one set of responses capable of addressing these concerns and of reformulating the concerns into a more complex conceptualization of care. The resulting analysis implies a theory of care as a pragmatic-communicative construct, one that is more …

Strangi: A Critical Analysis And Planning Suggestions, Mitchell M. Gans, Jonathan G. Blattmachr Sep 2003

Strangi: A Critical Analysis And Planning Suggestions, Mitchell M. Gans, Jonathan G. Blattmachr

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In Strangi, the Tax Court eliminated all estate tax discounts for a family partnership. It held, as it had in several prior cases, that section 2036(a)(1) required this result. The court then went on to reach the alternative holding that section 2036(a)(2) likewise precluded the estate from claiming a discount. While many have taken steps to address the threat that section 2036(a)(1) poses to these partnerships, few, if any, anticipated the court's alternative holding and the potentially critical threat it poses if sustained. The authors argue that the alternative holding is based on a misreading of the Supreme Court's decision …

Toward Building Conversational Spoken-Language Interfaces: Acknowledgment Use In American English And Mexican Spanish, Karen Ward, Tasha Hollingsed, Javier A. Aldaz Salmon Sep 2003

Toward Building Conversational Spoken-Language Interfaces: Acknowledgment Use In American English And Mexican Spanish, Karen Ward, Tasha Hollingsed, Javier A. Aldaz Salmon

Graduate Student Papers (CS)

Should spoken-language interfaces incorporate human discourse phenomena? Acknowledgments, for example, are ubiquitous in human conversation but are rare in human-computer interaction. Are people unwilling to use this human convention when talking to a machine, or is their scarcity due to the design of current spoken-language interfaces? We found that, given a simple spoken-language interface that responded to acknowledgments, over two thirds of subjects used acknowledgments at least once, about the same number that used more traditional commands to control the interface. These results were consistent for both Mexican Spanish and American English versions of the interface, and they suggest that …
