A Test Of The Cultural Ecological Model With Chinese And Caucasian Parents., Elaine Hulei Sep 2003

A Test Of The Cultural Ecological Model With Chinese And Caucasian Parents., Elaine Hulei

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the cultural effect on parenting practices based on Ogbu's (1981) cultural ecological model. In a given society, parenting beliefs are a reflection of that society's cultural values and traditions. For example, verbosity, a parenting style, is considered a parenting mistake in Western culture; however, it may not be a-mistake in Chinese culture. Thirty-one immigrant Chinese and 30 Caucasian Americans mothers were recruited for this study. Three questionnaires were employed to measure parenting styles, child behaviors associated with parenting styles and the possible relationship between acculturation level and Chinese immigrant parenting. These questionnaires …

Whose Music Is It Anyway?: How We Came To View Musical Expression As A Form Of Property -- Part I, Michael W. Carroll Sep 2003

Whose Music Is It Anyway?: How We Came To View Musical Expression As A Form Of Property -- Part I, Michael W. Carroll

Working Paper Series

Many participants in the music industry consider unauthorized downloading of music files over the Internet to be “theft” of their “property.” Many Internet users who exchange music files reject that characterization. Prompted by this dispute, this Article explores how those who create and distribute music first came to look upon music as their property and when in Western history the law first supported this view. By analyzing the economic and legal structures governing musicmaking in Western Europe from the classical period in Greece through the Renaissance, the Article shows that the law first granted some exclusive rights in the Middle …

Interpersonal Dynamics, Joshua D. Rosenberg Sep 2003

Interpersonal Dynamics, Joshua D. Rosenberg

ExpressO

This article explains the importance of relationship skills to attorneys. It explains why, despite the significance of these skills to attorneys, law schools and law firms ignore them. It then explains how these skills can be taught in law school, and how a relation al perspective can become not simply an important part of the law, but also an important part of the lives of lawyers. It develops and supports an ap proach that develops the cognitive, behavioral, perceptual and emotional skills and awareness essential to both accurate communication and productive and meaningful relationships. This approach is quite different from …

Reducing Racial And Ethnic Health Disparities: Estimating The Impact Of High Health Center Penetration In Low-Income Communities, Peter Shin, Karen Jones, Sara J. Rosenbaum Sep 2003

Reducing Racial And Ethnic Health Disparities: Estimating The Impact Of High Health Center Penetration In Low-Income Communities, Peter Shin, Karen Jones, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The health disparities literature suggests that although the lack of health insurance is the most basic barrier to health care, improved access to clinically appropriate care is key, particularly in the case of minority and low-income populations where the health risks are greatest. This study examines the relationship between health center penetration into medically underserved communities and the reduction of state-level health disparities. Health centers were developed with the express aim of serving medically underserved persons. Their doubling represents a significant health priority of the Bush Administration and one that enjoys bipartisan Congressional support.

Review Of Greek And Roman Actors: Aspects Of An Ancient Profession, Edited By Pat Easterling And Edith Hall., Anne Duncan Sep 2003

Review Of Greek And Roman Actors: Aspects Of An Ancient Profession, Edited By Pat Easterling And Edith Hall., Anne Duncan

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This is an excellent collection of essays, and an important one for anyone interested in performance, theater history, literature, cultural studies, gender, and a host of other fields. Ancient actors, as real individuals who engaged professionally with literary texts, provide a point of interdisciplinary contact between literature and history, as well as novel avenues of approach into archaeology, epigraphy, rhetoric, philosophy, textual criticism, and other subfields of Classics. The twenty essays in this volume stretch from Classical Greece to the Byzantine era and beyond, and cover a wide range of evidence and methodologies. They are divided into three groups: The …

Success, Truth, And The Galilean Strategy, P.D. Magnus Sep 2003

Success, Truth, And The Galilean Strategy, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Philip Kitcher develops the Galilean Strategy to defend realism against its many opponents. I explore the structure of the Galilean Strategy and consider it specifically as an instrument against constructive empiricism. Kitcher claims that the Galilean Strategy underwrites an inference from success to truth. We should resist that conclusion, I argue, but the Galilean Strategy should lead us by other routes to believe in many things about which the empiricist would rather remain agnostic.
