A Field Guide To Industrial Properties In Texas, Amy E. Dase Jan 2003

A Field Guide To Industrial Properties In Texas, Amy E. Dase

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In the truest sense, industrial properties are more likely than any others to fit architect Louis Sullivan’s oft-quoted assertion that “form ever follows function.” Despite their substantial role in economic and social spheres, industrial properties have long been glossed over by those interested in material culture. It seems, in fact, that neither a comprehensive nor a contemporary overview of these property typologies has been accomplished to date.

A Field Guide to Industrial Properties in Texas is an attempt to address an identifiable information gap. It takes into consideration industrial properties that are related to the petroleum and natural gas, grain, …

Questions Of Taxation Framed As Accounting Historical Research: A Suggested Approach, Margaret Lamb Jan 2003

Questions Of Taxation Framed As Accounting Historical Research: A Suggested Approach, Margaret Lamb

Accounting Historians Journal

This review essay suggests considerations to be addressed in research design if research on a taxation subject is to succeed as rigorous accounting research, well grounded in relevant historical scholarship. Tax research must focus on substantive subjects that are recognizable as accounting; the methods, approach, and exposition must be historical to an acceptable standard; and the research must engage with relevant portions of the existing body of accounting historical scholarship. Further, scholarly engagement with the best researchers and liveliest debates that the disciplines of accounting and history have to offer will enrich the treatment of tax in accounting history.

Theses Digitization Project

Biographical data inventories (biodata) have one of the best predictors of job performance criteria for over 100 hundred years. Similarly, CommonFormat Biodata (CFB) inventories have also demonstrated their ability to predict certain performance criteria. There are two common themes and tow common sub-themes typically associated with CFB intruments, Education, experience, time, and specificity respectively. The major purpose of this paper was to employ a confirmatory factor analysis strategy to construct and validate a CFB inventory.

Faculty Dissertations

This study sought to ascertain and analyze the leadership assumptions of American Statesmen during the Constitutional Convention and ratification debates. The researcher examined the primary source public debates from 1787-1789. This study identified the Statesmen’s view of leadership, which emerged from their writings and debates. Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy C. Schindler

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. The authors completed a case study of a documentation project to collect archival records about the history of environmental affairs in New York State. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. Discourses Of Disappointment: The Betrayal Of Women's Emancipation Following The French And Russian Revolutions, Crystal Denise Helton Jan 2003

Discourses Of Disappointment: The Betrayal Of Women's Emancipation Following The French And Russian Revolutions, Crystal Denise Helton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Questions relating to gender are worth pursuing in order to more accurately discern the impact of the French and Russian Revolutions on society more broadly as opposed to just political leaders, well-known historical figures, or those predominately male citizens that comprised the upper echelons of their respective movements. A careful analysis of secondary sources, or the historiography on women’s place within the French and Russian Revolutions, reveals that, in spite of their use of egalitarian rhetoric, the revolutionary governments in France and Russia continued to view women based upon conventional standards. Discourses written by and about women before, during, and …

Towards A Resolution Of The Dispute - Introduction, Robert Leeson Jan 2003

Towards A Resolution Of The Dispute - Introduction, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

The chapters in Part Four fall into four sections. The first three chapters represent Patinkin’s ongoing scholarly interest in explaining the evolution of Keynes’ economics and his relationship to the Chicago economists. In his Sir Dennis Robertson lecture, Patinkin (chapter 44 [1974], 4, 27, 12) explained that he was using the term “Keynesian monetary theory” in contrast to “the quantity theory” to describe “the General Theory and the literature to which it gave rise – though I should note that the aspect of the theory that is my primary concern here (namely, the treatment of money from the viewpoint of …

The Creation Of Rice County District One Hospital Intensive Care Unit, Rae S. Ormsby Jan 2003

The Creation Of Rice County District One Hospital Intensive Care Unit, Rae S. Ormsby

Theses and Graduate Projects

Based on social history and idealist constructs, this study explores the creation of one intensive care unit (ICU) in the setting of its conrmunity's economic, political, and cultural background. The social history describes the social forces that facilitated the ICU's creation. From an idealist construct the study attempts to understand the thinking of the decision-makers involved as well as the community's response. The work is based largely on personal interviews and archival data from the records of the hospital board. Background material to explain the community context comes from such sources as local daily newspapers and the archives of the …

Silent No More: The Voice Of A Farm Worker Press, 1964–1975, Carlos R. Guerrero

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The dissertation critically examines the content of El Malcriado , a movement newspaper published by the Farm Worker Press in Delano, California between 1964 and 1975. El Malcriado resulted from the efforts of people attempting to create a cultural space to challenge and reconstruct the asymmetrical relations of power between farm workers and California agribusiness. Within the pages of the newspaper, its articles, cartoons, featured news stories, and editorials convey a narrative that points to the struggle of defining a farm worker position in opposition to the status quo of California agribusiness.

A discourse content analysis of the newspaper between …

Utopian Androgyny: Romantic Socialists Confront Individualism In July Monarchy France, Naomi J. Andrews Jan 2003

Utopian Androgyny: Romantic Socialists Confront Individualism In July Monarchy France, Naomi J. Andrews

History

In a certain respect, nineteenth-century intellectual and political history is the story of the liberal individual and his foes. From conservative Christian thinkers to Socialists to Communists, French intellectuals of the first part of the century were engaged in one long conversation about the individual and his (and later, her) rights, responsibilities, and relationship to society. This conversation was not narrow or singular, as it engaged questions of economic equality, political rights and participation, and gender equity and equality. Socialists of the pre-Marx generation in particular articulated their critique of capitalism and the politics it spawned through their analysis of …

The Kelly Gang Reborn: The First Australian Mounted Unit To See Active Service In The Second World War, Peter J. Dean

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

In the pre-dawn chill the sentries shifted in their positions and stared at the rocky hills and mountains beyond their position. The camp stirred to the familiar smell of horse feed and the jingle of a bridle as the men, adorned in their distinctive slouch hats, prepared for their early morning patrol. Before them lay the vast expanse of the Middle East. The desert, rock and sands of Syria.

The Middle East; desert, sand, horses and slouch hats invokes the images of the triumphant Australian Light Horse of World War One. It brings to mind images and memories such as …

"Everybody Get Together": The Sixties Counterculture And Public Space, 1964--1967, Jill Katherine Silos

Doctoral Dissertations

Historians and cultural analysts have traditionally considered the sixties counterculture an apolitical phenomenon by historians and other analysts. Yet concentrated examination of the public activities of the counterculture in San Francisco from 1963 to 1967 reveals that they were engaged in the creation of a public political culture that challenged the power of civil authorities to regulate the uses of parks, streets and sidewalks. In doing so, the counterculture constituted a distinct community with a political agenda.

This thesis is demonstrated through an analysis of the development of an ethos toward public space in the Beat movement and Merry Prankster …

John Noonan On Marriage And The Family: Continuity And Change In Doctrine, William J. Wagner Jan 2003

John Noonan On Marriage And The Family: Continuity And Change In Doctrine, William J. Wagner

Scholarly Articles

In support of its critique, this article first analyzes Judge Noonan's general methodological vantage and shows how he proceeds, within that vantage, to formulate general moral norms. Next, it compares Judge Noonan's work with trends in the reasoning of the United States Supreme Court between 1965 and the present to suggest that some of Noonan's assumptions about the longer-term consequences of his own methodology for stability and continuity in moral theology may be unwarranted. Finally, it argues that Noonan is not justified in assuming that adjudicative reasoning, without more, suffices for the formulation of general moral norms, or that transcendent …

Review Of The Indian Association Of Alberta: A History Of Political Action By Laurie Meijer Drees, Joe Sawchuk

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Native political organizations occupy a unique and important place in the Canadian political arena, whether on the national, provincial, or regional level. They offer a forum where both Native leaders and mainstream politicians can confer and, perhaps even more importantly, be seen to be conferring. This book is a study of one of the most influential of these organizations, the Indian Association of Alberta (IAA), from its beginning in 1939 as an organization devoted to regional and com~ unity issues to the 1960s, when it led the fight against the Trudeau government's "White Paper."

One of the volume's strengths is …

Beavers, Firs, Salmon, And Falling Water: Pacific Northwest Regionalism And The Environment, William L. Lang Jan 2003

Beavers, Firs, Salmon, And Falling Water: Pacific Northwest Regionalism And The Environment, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Discusses the importance of salmon in defining environmental understanding in the Pacific Northwest. Dam construction, population influx, economic development, and politics have dramatically changed the geography of Oregon Country since 1850. The technological alterations and population growth redefined the sense of place. However, salmon has remained the most important icon of the Pacific Northwest, both for Native Americans and for nonnatives have who worked to save the salmon from extinction. Salmon have become a "living metaphor" for the region, and their fate reflects an understanding of historical context and the role of people in their relationship to the environment in …

In thefirst experiment intakes of pelleted ryegrassand lucerne, given eitheralone or as a choice, were measured in lambshoused indoors in individual pens. Each of the three feeding treatments was given to 12 lambs at two degrees of maturity (0.30 and 0·45 of estimated mature sizes). The 12 lambs were constituted as three replicates of the two sexes of each of two breeds. The measured intakes werecompared with those estimated using the n-alkanes C31 andC33, found …
