Philosophies Of Colour: Gender And Acculturation, Helen V Andrew Jan 2003

Philosophies Of Colour: Gender And Acculturation, Helen V Andrew

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

My hypothesis is that 'Colour' as idea acts as a dynamic in the production of meaning and as such is part of what Le Doeuff (1991: 46-49) argues are deeply held epistemes that structure and govern our ways of thinking. I have dealt with the difficulties attendant on the analysis of a phenomenon as insubstantial as colour (as idea and as precept) by assuming Goethe's (1810: 305-323) concept of the enrobement of colour to objects without also attaching Goethe's theoretical hypothesis of moral associations to colour. Thus I combine four different methodologies to broadly related areas and cloak each in …

Political Dealignment In Britain : The Local Evidence 1959-1979, Paul James Lambe Jan 2003

Political Dealignment In Britain : The Local Evidence 1959-1979, Paul James Lambe

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis challenges the dominant view that municipal elections tell us practically nothing about the preferences and attitudes of the voter to local issues and events, that municipal elections are no more than national referendums. It suggests that the influence of socio-economic environment and political context and indeed structural factors have hitherto been underestimated. It argues that municipal politics and voting behaviour impact upon parliamentary electoral behaviour and outcomes and thereby the politics of place impinge upon the national electoral level. The thesis employs a multi-disciplinary approach that combines the qualitative research methods of the historian and the quantitative statistical …

Choral Music Education: A Survey Of Research 1996-2002, Amber Turcott Jan 2003

Choral Music Education: A Survey Of Research 1996-2002, Amber Turcott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to review and summarize selected choral music education research published between 1996-2002. Four major research surveys in this area were previously published by Gonzo (1973), Hylton (1983), Phillips (1992), and Grant and Norris (1998). Each of these authors stressed a need for research in all areas of choral music education beyond the dissertation level and called for research that mimicked "real-world" experiences that would benefit choral music educators.

This study investigated the following: (a) whether research studies in choral music education have increased beyond doctoral dissertation studies; (b) whether previous research studies have been …

Publishing Privacy: Intellectual Property, Self-Expression, And The Victorian Novel, Jessica Bulman-Pozen Jan 2003

Publishing Privacy: Intellectual Property, Self-Expression, And The Victorian Novel, Jessica Bulman-Pozen

Faculty Scholarship

The relationship between privacy and intellectual property has resurfaced with a twist at the turn of the twenty-first century. If Victorian authors regarded intellectual property as private, contemporary proposals instead urge us to regard private information as property. In response to technological developments that have facilitated unprecedented invasions of individuals’ privacy, some scholars have advocated legally classifying private information as a form of property. These scholars insist that the best way to respond to privacy violations, particularly corporate commodification of personal data, is to invest people with property rights that would furnish control over their personal information. Insofar as intellectual …

Of Legal Transplants, Legal Irritants, And Economic Development, Katharina Pistor, Daniel Berkowitz Jan 2003

Of Legal Transplants, Legal Irritants, And Economic Development, Katharina Pistor, Daniel Berkowitz

Faculty Scholarship

The collapse of the socialist system has given way to unprecedented economic and legal reforms in the former socialist countries. Over the past decade they have enacted new legislation in all areas of the law, drawing heavily on legal models from developed market economies, including common law and civil law countries. While the transplanted laws now on the books is largely consistent with Western practice, the enforcement of these new laws is often ineffective (Berkowitz, Pistor, and Richard, 2003).

The Forgotten Voice Of The Oneida Stake Academy, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

The Physiography class invited me to their Comet Party. We all got up at 3 o'clock a.m. and went to the academy building and there watched Halley's comet and indulged in outdoor games, wrote H. Oswald Christensen, a devoted faculty member of the Oneida Stake Academy in Preston, Idaho. His voice, along with those of many other Academy faculty members and students, must not be forgotten.

From Liverpool To Keokuk: The Mormon Maritime Migration Experience Of 1853, Fred E. Woods Jan 2003

From Liverpool To Keokuk: The Mormon Maritime Migration Experience Of 1853, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

In January, Fifty-three, we left our English home, Determined for the Gospel's sake, to Zion's land to come. Our family was very small, its members numbered three, Yet strong in faith of Israel's God, and full of hope were we. 'Twas not to us an easy task to bid old friends adieu, To take a long farewell of those who always had been true, To leave for aye, the cozy home we made but just before, And take a last fond look of things we should behold no more; The wind blew keen, as out we went into the cold …

Images Of Engineering: An Investigation Of Gender And Attitudes Towards Engineering, Liz Hodgkinson Jan 2003

Images Of Engineering: An Investigation Of Gender And Attitudes Towards Engineering, Liz Hodgkinson

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

The research presented in this thesis used a mixed method approach to investigate the attitudes of sixth-form students in two British cities, towards engineering as a career, with the aim of finding out which factors encourage or discourage young people from becoming engineers, and whether these differ for males and females. The study can be set in the context of the declining popularity of engineering as a career choice for males and the continuing under-representation of females, for whom engineering is a non-traditional career choice. The principal research hypothesis was that negative images of engineering discourage girls and many boys …

Law And What I Truly Should Decide, John M. Finnis Jan 2003

Law And What I Truly Should Decide, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

Suppose we tried to think about law without trying first to describe it or to work out what the concept of it is. Suppose we asked instead whether, and if so why, and when, we-or more precisely each one of us-should favor introducing, having, endorsing, maintaining, complying with and enforcing it. We would be trying to think about law, about something not limited to our own time and town, but as something that people of any time and place of which we are aware would, as we can understand, have the same or similar need for and reasons to comply …

The Evolution And Experience Of Stomal Therapy Nurses In Australia 1959-2000, Keryln Carville Jan 2003

The Evolution And Experience Of Stomal Therapy Nurses In Australia 1959-2000, Keryln Carville

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In Australia, stomal therapy nurses are registered nurses who have undertaken an educational programme in the care, counselling and rehabilitation of persons-who have, or who could potentially have, a wound, an ostomy (that is an artificial opening into a body cavity) or incontinence of bodily waste. The genesis of stomal therapy nurses in Australia as a specialty group within the broader nursing profession was in 1971, when 11 founding members established an association for registered nurses with an interest in the care of patients with stomas. However, the serendipitous event that pre-empted the formation of this special interest group, can …

Confronting The Challenge Of Information Literacy, Steven L. Baker Jan 2003

Confronting The Challenge Of Information Literacy, Steven L. Baker

The Christian Librarian

Confronting the challenges to any academic institution posed by the revolution in information resources since the appearance of the Internet can be a daunting task. Providing the financial and human resources required to provide reliable and secure access can alone be a major hurdle. The specialized equipment needed to effectively incorporate the new resources into student learning environments present an additional burden. The need to collaboratively manage the systems and adapt staffing patterns to the new resources can challenge the skills of the best administrators. The patterns of information seeking behavior exhibited by students in today's richly diverse information environment …

The 1853 Mormon Migration Through Keokuk, Fred E. Woods, Douglas Atterberg Jan 2003

The 1853 Mormon Migration Through Keokuk, Fred E. Woods, Douglas Atterberg

Faculty Publications

In May 1853, William W. Belknap, who would later serve as a major general in the Civil War and as secretary of war to President Grant, wrote to his sister, Clara, about the Mormon emigrants who were outfitting in Keokuk, Iowa, that spring and summer: "Yesterday was Sunday and I wish you had been here to go up to the Mormon Camp with me. They had preaching at three stands in three languages--English, German, and Danish. They sing --especially the Danes--very sincerely and are perfectly enthusiastic. It is a strange, strange mystery and if you were here you'd be astonished. …
