The Origins Of Political Policing In Canada: Class, Law, And The Burden Of Empire, Andrew Parnaby, Gregory S. Kealey
The Origins Of Political Policing In Canada: Class, Law, And The Burden Of Empire, Andrew Parnaby, Gregory S. Kealey
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This essay examines the origins of the Canadian secret service from the 1860s to the Great War. During this time, the Canadian government faced political challenges from Irish republicans and South Asian radicals. Both groups sought to liberate their home countries-Ireland and India-from British rule by promoting the idea of independence and the necessity of militant tactics amongst their respective immigrant communities in North America. Faced with this subversive activity, which had both domestic and international implications, the government created a secret service to gather political intelligence. Significantly, the government's political response was shaped decisively by its status as an …

Discussing Prognosis: Documented Communication With Elderly Patients With Cancer At The End Of Life, Anna Gibb Hallemeier
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the frequency of documented prognosis discussions among terminally ill cancer patients, to identify correlates of having documented prognosis discussions, and to describe the content of prognosis discussions as documented in patient medical records. Sample data were collected from the randomly selected medical records of inpatients (n=210) aged 65 years or older and admitted with diagnoses of brain, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, or inoperable lung cancer from six large Connecticut hospitals. A standardized instrument was used to extract data concerning patient demographics, hospital course, prognosis discussions, and evidence of advance care planning. Prognosis …

Estimating Procurement Cost Growth Using Logistic And Multiple Regression, Gary W. Moore
Estimating Procurement Cost Growth Using Logistic And Multiple Regression, Gary W. Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Cost Growth in Department of Defense (DoD) major systems has been an ongoing problems for more than 30 years. Previous research has demonstrated the use of two-step logistic and multiple regression methodology to predicting cost growth produces desirable results traditional single-step regression. This research effort validates, and further explores the use of a two-step procedure for assessing DoD major weapon system cost growth using historical data. We compile programmatic data from the Selected Acquisition Reports (SARs) between 1990 and 2001 for programs covering all defense departments. Our analysis concentrates on cost growth in procurement dollar accounts for the Engineering and …

"Are You Beginning To See A Pattern Here?" Family And Medical Discourses Shape The Story Of Black Infant Mortality, Elaine R. Cleeton
"Are You Beginning To See A Pattern Here?" Family And Medical Discourses Shape The Story Of Black Infant Mortality, Elaine R. Cleeton
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Postmodern and poststructuralist theorizations of the interrelations of the particular and the universal have identified women's bodies to be the last frontier for scientific discovery leading to and satisfying the modern compulsion to stabilize and control life from birth to death. This institutional ethnography of one city's response to an elevated infant mortality rate among the babies of African American urban, impoverished women explores their discursive transformation from single mothers who cannot begin prenatal care before the second trimester because too few physicians will treat Medicaid patients, into sexually-immoral, illegaldrug- using women who deliberately harm their babies. The study locates …

Determination Of 4,4'-Dinitrocarbanilide (Dnc), A Component Of Nicarbazin, In Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis) Eggshells Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Randal S. Stahl, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Teresa L. Buettgenbach, John J. Johnston
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
A method was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography to assay 4,4'-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC), the active ingredient in Nicarbazin, in eggshells collected from Canada geese fed a formulated feed fortified with Nicarbazin at doses of 0, 125, 250, and 500 μg/g. The method was developed using chicken eggshells fortified with DNC. The method was used to quantify DNC in both the shell-associated membranes and the calcified shell extracellular matrix. These values were compared to those obtained for a composite sample consisting of both the membranes and the calcified shell extracellular matrix. The validated method was used to quantify DNC in eggshells from …

High-Stakes Testing And The History Of Graduation, Sherman Dorn
High-Stakes Testing And The History Of Graduation, Sherman Dorn
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
An historical perspective on high-stakes testing suggests that tests required for high school graduation will have mixed results for the putative value of high school diplomas: (1) graduation requirements are likely to have indirect as well as direct effects on the likelihood of graduating; (2) the proliferation of different exit documents may dilute efforts to improve the education of all students; and (3) graduation requirements remain unlikely to disentangle the general cultural confusion in the U.S. about the purpose of secondary education and a high school diploma, especially confusion about whether the educational, exchange, or other value of a diploma …

The Balance Of Forces And The Empire Of Liberty: States' Rights And The Louisiana Purchase, Robert Knowles
The Balance Of Forces And The Empire Of Liberty: States' Rights And The Louisiana Purchase, Robert Knowles
Law Faculty Publications
This Article challenges the conventional wisdom about the Louisiana Treaty and argues that it was unconstitutional. As many students of history know, President Jefferson had serious misgivings about its constitutionality, which scholars have dismissed as driven by an overly strict construction of the Constitution. The Article concludes that Jefferson's concerns were in fact motivated primarily by respect for federalism principles.
This Article identifies and discusses the underlying conflict between two radically different visions of federalism. While Jefferson s Republicans believed that the incorporation of new states in the West would merely expand the Constitutions form of government to more territory, …
