Overcoming The Politics Of Reform: The Story Of The Cherokee Nation Of Oklahoma Constitutional Convention, Eric Lemont

American Indian Law Review

A pressing international challenge is developing processes of constitution-making that manage the politics of reform and produce legitimate and effective constitutions. This challenge is of special concern for numerous American Indian nations that have been embroiled in dual governments and constitutional crises over the past several decades. This article traces the recent constitutional reform process of the second largest Indian nation in the United States, the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. During the middle of its own constitutional crisis in 1999, the Nation formed an independent constitution commission and held a nine-day constitutional convention. The inclusiveness and independence of these two …

Advaita Vedanta And Marcus Borg: Opportunities For Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Anantanand Rambachan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Dialogue between Hindus and Christians in recent times appears to be dominated by the controversies concerning proselytizing and conversion. While these are important issues and ought not to be overlooked in Hindu-Christian interactions, we ignore, to our mutual deprivation, the wealth of insight about the nature of God and the meaning of being religious that are the fruits of reflection, practice and experience in our traditions. Our exploration of these issues reveal shared convictions, challenging questions for each other and the recognition that religious growth does not occur only through encounters within the boundaries of one's own religious world. While …

Next, this Note explores the differences in rules for public, private, and involuntary public figures. The law of defamation is offered as a model for privacy law to emulate, specifically, the limited-purpose public figure created under Gertz and its progeny. Then, the issue of whether one's status as a public figure may diminish over the passage of time is considered. This Note posits that limited-purpose public figures should exist …
